WESMEN OVERCOME SLOW START TO BEAT BISONSThe home team started slowly but finished strong on this night. The Winnipeg Wesmen overcame a slow start to defeat the Manitoba Bisons 74-62 in a rare Sunday night game at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Wesmen (7-4) got off to a slow start trailing 22-16 after the opening quarter but were able to recover in time to record the victory over the visiting Manitoba Bisons (5-6).
"I am very pleased with our team effort. Defense was the key to our offense. The kids really played hard tonight", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.
Second year guard Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 22 points, including four three pointers (three alone in the third quarter). Alex MacIver contributed 18 points to the win and Caitie Gooch finished with 16 points, including four-three pointers and five assists. Jessica Stromberg led the Wesmen with 12 rebounds.
Tessa Klassen was the top scorer for Manitoba finishing with 19 points, including five-three pointers. Kaitlyn Flett followed with 14 points and Mubo Ilelaboye scored 10 points.
Winnipeg seemed to have things going their way early on in the opening quarter until the four minute mark when the Bisons went on a 15-0 run during a five minute span to take the lead after the opening quarter.
The Wesmen rebounded in the second quarter outscoring Manitoba 18-9, including an 11-0 run in the final 3:40 to take a 34-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The teams came out in the second half looking for the advantage but the home team Wesmen went into the final quarter holding a 53-48 lead.
Amy Ogidan took control of the game in the fourth quarter scoring 13 points in the quarter to carry the Wesmen to a 74-62 victory.
The two teams will face each other Monday night at the University of Manitoba. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

BISONS DROP WESMEN TO KICK OFF SECOND HALFThe Wesmen were looking to kick off their second half schedule with a better result. The Manitoba Bisons defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 69-55 Sunday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen (2-9) were looking to erase a miserable first half of the season but were unable to against the visiting Bisons (4-7).
Nathan dixon was a killer for Manitoba scoring a game high 24 points, including five three pointers. Myron Dean finished with a double-double 19 points, including eight in the third quarter and a game high 14 rebounds. C.J. Wicker also had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Nick Lother was the top scorer for Winnipeg with 19 points, three assists. Peter Lomuro followed with 12 points and a team leading eight rebounds and four steals.
Winnipeg got off to a solid start leading 13-9 after the opening quarter led by Nick Lother's eight points in the opening ten minutes.
Manitoba started the second quarter on a 9-2 run in the first 3:40 to take the lead for the first time in the game (18-15). The Bisons extended their lead to 25-18, when back-to-back baskets by Peter Lomuro and a big bucket by Eric Zimmerman tied the score at 25-25 with just over two minutes left to play. Winnipeg outscored Manitoba 5-2 down the stretch to take a 30-27 lead into the halftime break.
The second half once again was the downfall for the Wesmen. The Bisons, led by Myron Dean's eight points in the third quarter outscored the Wesmen 22-13 to take the lead at 49-43 after three quarters of play.
Manitoba continued to outplay the Wesmen in the fourth quarter, outscoring Winnipeg 20-12 to preserve the victory.
Manitoba outrebounded the Wesmen 48-42 in the contest.
"We need to make shots if we are going to win games. The Bisons hurt us on the glass and we need to be better on Monday night", said Wesmen Head Coach Dave Crook.
The two teams will meet in a rematch Monday night at the University of Manitoba. Game time is 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN COMPLETE SWEEP AGAINST BISONSThe Winnipeg Wesmen completed a two game sweep against the Manitoba Bisons with an impressive 71-59 win Monday night at the University of Manitoba. The victory comes on the heels of Sunday nights 74-62 win at the Duckworth Centre.
Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 26 points,19 points coming in the second half. Jessica Stromberg scored 13 points and hauled down seven rebounds. Alex MacIver finished with 11 points and a game high nine rebounds.
Enna Handan led Manitoba with 17 points ad eight rebounds. Tessa Klassen followed with 16 points, including four three-pointers.Manitoba scored the first two points of the game but the Wesmen responded in a big way running off 11 straight points to take a commanding 11-2 lead with over six minutes to play.
Manitoba chipped away at the Wesmen lead and were within seven points until a MacKenzie Prasek three pointer restored the Winnipeg double digit lead at 18-8. Manitoba outscored Winnipeg 7-2 to cut the Wesmen lead to 20-15 after the opening quarter.The Wesmen opened the second quarter on a quick 6-0 run to extend their lead to 26-15. Manitoba did not quit getting back into the game thanks to a 10-1 run to cut the Wesmen lead to 27-25. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the half with the Wesmen heading into the halftime break holding a 35-31 lead. Alex MacIver had a solid first half leading the Wesmen with 11 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Tessa Klassen led the Bisons with 11 points in the opening half, including three-three pointers.
The second half began with the Bisons making adjustments early on outscoring Winnipeg 8-2 to take their first lead since the opening possession by a score of 39-37. The Wesmen did not roll over running off 12 straight points in a 3:30 span to take a 49-39 lead with two minutes to play in the third quarter. The teams exchanged baskets in the final minutes with the Wesmen holding a 54-46 lead after three quarters.
Winnipeg held their ground in the final quarter to secure the victory outscoring Manitoba 17-13 in a tight final ten minutes.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 8-4 and puts them in second place in the Great Plains division. Manitoba falls to 5-7 to remain in third place in the division. The Wesmen will host Brandon (1-11) Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre at 6:00 p.m. The two teams will travel to Brandon on Saturday night to wrap up the home and home series.

WESMEN GET BIG WIN OVER BISONSHead Coach Dave Crook's team needed a win and they got one. The Wesmen defeated the Manitoba Bisons 77-68 Monday night at the University of Manitoba. The Wesmen avenged Sunday nights 69-55 loss at the Duckworth Centre.
Peter Lomuro led Winnipeg with 23 points and six assists. Nick Lother scored 14 points and added four assist. James Horaska and Christopher Jordan each scored 12 points. Jeff Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 10 rebounds.
Eric Garcia led the Bisons with 17 points, seven assists. Nathan Dixon added 16 points.
The Wesmen came out of the gate on fire opening up a 12-4 lead at the midway mark of the opening quarter. The teams continued to fight tooth and nail down the stretch with neither team giving the other any easy baskets. The Wesmen led after the opening quarter 17-14.
The teams came out in the second quarter looking for a bit of breathing space. Manitoba scored seven of the first eleven points to pull even at 21-21. Back-to-back baskets by Mike James and Chris Jordan gave the Wesmen a 25-21 lead with little over six minutes to play. The Bisons gained some momentum after Nathan Dixon nailed back-to-back three pointers to give Manitoba a 29-25 lead just past the midway mark of the quarter. Once again both teams exchanged baskets until Manitoba scored two late baskets to take a 33-30 lead into halftime.
Peter Lomuro and Christopher Jordan led Winnipeg with seven points each in the opening half. Nathan Dixon led Manitoba with seven points.The halftime break seemed to energize the Wesmen as Winnipeg went on a 12-1 run in the opening 4:50 to take a 42-34 lead. Winnipeg continued to carry the action connecting on three-three pointers (two by Nick Lother and a single by Peter Lomuro) to take the lead at 58-47 after the third quarter.
The teams battled in the opening stages of the final quarter matching each other basket for basket. Manitoba closed to within five points at 67-62 when a big three point play by Jeff Shynkaryk with 3:57 to play extended Winnipeg's lead to 70-62. Manitoba guard Eric Garcia drained back-to-back three pointers to cut the Wesmen lead to 70-68 with 2:25 to play. Winnipeg was able to compose themselves and sank numerous key free throws in the final 1:30 to secure the important win.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-9, one game back of the Bisons (4-8) and the Brandon Bobcats (4-8) in the tight Great Plains Division standings. Winnipeg will take on the Brandon Bobcats on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre at 8:00 p.m. The two teams will meet in Brandon on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. to wrap up the home and home series.

GOOCH LEADS WESMEN PAST BOBCATS
One player can make a difference. Wesmen guard Catie Gooch was the factor in leading the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 79-68 victory over the Brandon Bobcats in front of 1273 fans at the Duckworth Centre Thursday evening.
The third year guard scored a game high 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field, including four three pointers.
"She was simply amazing tonight", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.
The game was started out as another classic battle between the two provincial rivals. The two played an even opening quarter with neither team leading by more than three points until back to back baskets by Alex MacIver and MacKenzie Prasek gave the Wesmen a 15-10 lead with 3:21 left in the opening frame. Brandon would recover and outscore Winnipeg 7-0 down the stretch to take a 17-15 lead after the opening quarter.
Brandon opened up the second quarter carrying the play and holding on to their lead until the 3:30 mark when an off balanced jumper by Catie Gooch found the bottom of the net to give the Wesmen the lead at 23-22. The teams would go on to trade baskets for the remainder of the half with the score ending up tied at 33-33 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Gooch took the team on her shoulders and scored 11 points in the quarter including back-to-back three pointers with under four minutes to play to extend the Wesmen lead to double digits at 47-37. Winnipeg continued to lead for the remainder of the quarter taking a 54-46 lead into the final quarter.
In the final quarter a Sarah Lopes three pointer put the Bobcats back into the game trailing by four, 55-51. The Wesmen showed their composure and did not let up making the final score 79-68 in their favour.
Jessica Stromberg contributed to the win with a double-double 12 points, 12 rebounds. Alex MacIver continued her fine play as of late scoring 10 points and hauling down 11 rebounds.
Sarah Lopes led Brandon with 14 points, including a pair of three pointers. Amanda Fortin finished with 13 points. Nicisha Johnson led Brandon in rebounds with 10.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 9-4 and puts them in a tie for for first place with the Regina Cougars (9-3) in the Great Plains Division. Brandon's record falls to 1-12. The two teams will wrap up their home and home series on Saturday night in Brandon. Game time is 6:00 p.m.

BOBCATS ROLL OVER WESMEN
The visiting Brandon Bobcats had their way with the Wesmen on this night. The Bobcats recorded a 89-61 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Brandon was in complete control for the entire game outplaying the Wesmen in all aspects.
The two teams played a tight first quarter with Brandon clinging to an 8-6 lead at the midway point of the opening quarter. The Bobcats would go on to outscore the Wesmen 11-6 down the stretch to take a 19-12 lead after the opening ten minutes.
Brandon fourth year guard Dany Charlery took control in the second quarter scoring 12 points to help the Bobcats outscore the Wesmen 24-15 to extend their lead to 43-27 at the halftime break.
Charlerey led all scorers at the half with 12 points. James Horaska led the Wesmen with 10 points in the opening half.
Winnipeg came out in the third quarter with some spark especially Mike James, who scored seven points in the opening 2:30 to cut the Bobcat lead to 47-34. The Bobcats regrouped soon after outscoring the Wesmen 12-6 in a span of five minutes to take a 59-40 lead. The Wesmen showed life in the final 1:20 scoring seven straight points to cut the Brandon lead to 59-47 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter Brandon went in for the kill outscoring a frustrated Wesmen team 30-14 to close out the victory.
Dany Charlery finished the game with a triple-double 23 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. The fourth year guard finished the game with five-three pointers. Eric Holm finished with 13 points. Adam Philpott and Rejean Chabot added 11 points each.
Mike James led the Wesmen with 13 points and nine rebounds. Nick Lother added 12 points. Peter Lomuro and James Horaska each finished the game with 10 points.
The victory improves Brandons record to 5-8, second place in the Great Plains Division. Winnipeg falls to 3-10, two points back of the Manitoba Bisons. The Bobcats and Wesmen will meet in Brandon on Saturday night to wrap up their home and home series. Game time is 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN START SECOND HALF WITH LOSS IN BRANDON
The Wesmen were hoping to start the second half of the regular season on a good note but the Brandon Bobcats did not let that happen. The Bobcats defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-14) on Thursday night in Brandon.
The Bobcats, ranked number four in the CIS took control in the first set leading 8-2 at the first technical timeout and extending their lead to 16-8 at the second timeout. The Bobcats would go on to win the first set 25-13.
Things did not get better for the Wesmen in set number two. Brandon continued to dominate leading 8-3 and 16-7 at the technical timeouts. The Bobcats would take a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 set two win.
The Bobcats showd their dominance in the third set leading 8-2 at the first technical and expanding their lead to 16-5 at the second break. Brandon would close out the match winning the third set 25-14.
Teagan Hunter led Brandon with a match high 14 kills. Janelle Wotton added 24 defensive digs. Erin Visch-Krahn led Brandon with three blocks.
Lauren Sears led the Wesmen with five kills and three blocks. Tessa Peterson finished the match with a team leading 12 defensive digs.
The Bobcats improve their record to 8-3 on the season. The Wesmen fall to 1-10. The two teams will conclude their home and home series at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Match time is 8:00 p.m.

BOBCATS BEAT WESMEN IN FOUR
The Wesmen started strong but were unable to finish that way. The Brandon Bobcats defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-22) in a key Canada West Conference showdown on Thursday night in Brandon.
Winnipeg got off to a great start in the match winning the first set 25-18. Winnipeg was able to hold the lead at both technical timeouts by scores of 8-2 and 16-9.
The Bobcats clawed their way back into the match in the second set. Brandon held leads of 8-2 and 16-10 at the two timeouts before winning the set 25-15.
In the third set the two provincial rivals battled one another. Brandon held slim leads of 8-7 and 16-14 at the set breaks. The teams would trade off points to tie the score at 22-22, when the Bobcats would score three straight points to win the set 25-22.
In the fourth set Brandon jumped out to a 8-5 lead at the first timeout and continued to lead 16-12 after the second break. Brandon had a 24-20 lead and were looking to close out the set but the Wesmen fought off two match points to close the gap to 24-22 until a Joel Small kill ended the match with the Bobcats winning the final set 25-22.
Paul Sanderson led Brandon with a match high 20 kills. Cam Blewett led the Bobcats with 11 defensive digs. Joel Small had four blocks.
Andrew Town led the Wesmen with 19 kills and six defensive digs. Paul Kjos and Danny Andres each had four blocks.
The victory by Brandon pulls the Bobcats even with the Wesmen in the Canada West Conference standings. Both teams have equal 6-3 records, tied for third in the conference. The teams will meet at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night. Match time is 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN REBOUND TO BEAT BOBCATS
The Winnipeg Wesmen shook off a slow start to defeat to the Brandon Bobcats 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen dropped the opening set but showed their true character rebounding to win the final three sets in an important Canada West battle between the two provincial rivals.
The Bobcats, ranked number eight in the CIS started the match on a great note jumping ahead of the number six ranked Wesmen 8-7 at the first technical timeout of the opening set. The teams exchanged points to 10-10 when the Bobcats reeled off five straight points to take a 15-10 lead. Brandon continued to lead at 16-12 at the second technical and would eventually go on to win the opening set 25-20.
The second set was a close affair with both teams exchanging points at different stages of the set. Winnipeg led 8-7 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. Four kills down the stretch by Andrew Town helped the Wesmen square the match with a 25-20 set number two win.
Winnipeg showed their dominance in the third set jumping out to a quick 8-2 lead at the first break before expanding their lead to 16-9 at the second break of the set. Brandon would close the gap to 22-20 before two big kills by Paul Kjos helped the Wesmen close out the set with a 25-22 set win.
The Bobcats regrouped in the fourth set holding a slim 8-7 lead at the first timeout. A pair of back-to-back aces by Bobcats left side Paul Sanderson gave Brandon a 12-9 lead. The Wesmen regrouped going on a 7-3 run to take a 16-15 lead at the second technical timeout. The teams exchanged points to 23-22 in Winnipeg's favour and on the next play Alan Ahow came thru with a big kill to set up match point at 24-22. Joel Small erased one match point with a kill of his own on the next play until the Wesmen closed out the match on the next play winning the fourth set 25-23.
Andrew Town led the Wesmen with 19 kills and 10 defensive digs. Paul Kjos was steady finishing with 11 kills. Middle blocker Justin Duff had three service aces and five blocks. Maurice Williams also had a strong match at the net with four blocks.
Paul Sanderson led Brandon with 17 kills, six digs and six service aces. Kevin Miller had 14 kills and three blocks. Joel Small finished the match with 10 kills and six blocks.
The win improves the Wesmens record to 7-3. Brandon with the lose drops to 6-4. Winnipeg will be on the road next weekend in Calgary to face the Calgary Dinos. Brandon will travel to Kamloops to take on Thompson Rivers.

WESMEN PLAY BETTER IN LOSS TO BRANDON
The Women's Volleyball team played better but the results were the same. The Brandon Bobcats beat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-16) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The number four ranked Bobcats defeated Winnipeg 3-0 this past Thursday night in Brandon.
Winnipeg played a solid first set leading 8-7 at the first technical timeout before the Bobcats recovered and led 16-14 at the second timeout. The teams battled and exchanged points for the remainder of the set until the Bobcats reeled two points to win the set 25-23.
The Bobcats carried their momentum into the second set leasding 8-5 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg continued to fight but could not get any closer than four points of the Bobcats. Brandon would go onto win the second set 25-19..
The third set started out just as tight as the previous two. The Bobcats held a slim 8-7 lead at the first timeout but gained some breathing room leading 16-12 at the second break of the set. Brandon carried the momentum outscoring the Wesmen 9-4 to win the third set 25-16.
Crystal Cornish led Brandon with 10 kills. Ashley Creighton, Teagan Hunter and Nicole Ban all finished with seven kills. Janelle Wotton had a match high 16 digs. Ban and Erin Visch-Krahn each had two blocks.
First year player Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 10 kills and eight digs. Marlee Bragg finished with eight kills.
The win improves Brandon's record to 9-3. Winnipeg falls to 1-11. The Wesmen will host the Calgary Dinos for a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Brandon will take on Thompson Rivers for a pair of matches.

WESMEN COMPLETE SWEEP WITH WIN IN BRANDON
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a two game sweep against the Brandon Bobcats with a 66-56 victory Saturday night in Brandon.
The win for the Wesmen is their second against Brandon in three days as the Wesmen beat the Bobcats 79-68 in Winnipeg this past Thursday night.
Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with 16 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Catie Gooch coming off a 26 point performance on Thursday night, finished with 13 points and three steals. Alex MacIver fifured in double digits scoring 10 points.
Nicisha Johnson led Brandon with 15 points. Melanie Thompson added 13 points.
Winnipeg held the lead at 3-24 at the halftime break. Brandon struggled from the field in the first half connecting on 29% of their shots. Winnipeg finished the first half connecting on 39% of their shots.
In the second half both teams struggled with their shooting but the Wesmen were able to outscore Brandon 36-32 in the second half to complete the sweep against the Bobcats.
The victory leaves Winnipeg with a record of 10-4, two points behind the Regina Cougars (11-3) for first place in the Great Plains Division. Brandon with the loss falls to 1-13. Winnipeg will head west for a pair of games next weekend starting with UBC on Friday before heading to Victoria to take on the Vikes on Saturday.

WESMEN FALL SHORT IN REMATCH WITH BRANDON
Head Coach Dave Crook's team knew they played a bad game on Thursday night against Brandon at home and were looking to redeem themselves on the road in Brandon.
The team played much better but fell just short in a 80-79 defeat to the Brandon Bobcats Saturday night in Brandon.
Brandon came into Winnipeg this past Thursday night and defeated the Wesmen 89-61.
Winnipeg got off to a great start in this game leading 45-42 at the halftime break. The Wesmen were an incredible 19-of-32 (59%) from the field in the opening half, including five-of - seven from three point territory.
Brandon stepped up their game in a close second half outscoring the Wesmen 38-34 in the final twenty minutes to hang on for the one pioint victory.
Rejean Chabot led Brandon with 21 points. Dany Charlerey added 17 points.
Peter Lomuro scored a game high 25 points to lead the Wesmen. Mike James added a double-double 14 points, 11 rebounds. Nick Lother also had a double-double collecting 10 poi nts and dishing out 10 assists.
The victory improves Brandons record to 6-8. Winnipeg falls to 3-11, two points back of the third place Manitoba Bisons in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen will head to BC for a pair of games next weekend starting on Friday night against the UBC Thunderbirds and concluding the trip the following night in Victoria against the Vikes.
