WESMEN BEAT BRANDON, SNAP LOSING STREAK

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen snapped a four game losing streak with a 70-56 victory over the Brandon Bobcats Thursday evening in Brandon.

Randie Gibson led Winnipeg with 17 points, including four-three pointers and four assists. Amy Ogidan followed with 12 points, two assists and two steals. Jessica Stromberg had a strong game with 10 points and a team high seven rebounds. Sarah Reilly also figured in double digits scoring 10 points.

Jayla Bousquet led Brandon with 20 points. Christie McCullough added 13 points in a losing cause.

Brandon looked to make a statement early on building a 19-14 lead after the opening quarter against the visiting Wesmen squad.

Winnipeg was able to make a statement of their own in the second quarter going on a 10-0 run to take the lead at 27-21 at the midway point of the quarter.  The Wesmen went into the halftime break leading 37-29.

The Bobcats got themselves back into the game in the third quarter going on a 12-4 run in a span of 5:26 to tie the score at 41-41.  The Wesmen were able to regain their focus and the lead outscoring the Bobcats 14-4 to take a commanding 55-41 lead after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter Brandon could only get as close as nine points early in the frame as the Wesmen were able to maintain a double digit lead for the remainder of the quarter to secure the victory.

"It was a total team effort, Randie Gibson played great. We settled down in the last three quarters and played better on defense", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 11-8. Brandon falls to 1-18.

The two teams will meet in Winnipeg on Sunday evening. Game time is 6:00 p.m.

BOBCATS DOWN WESMEN IN BRANDON

The hometown Brandon Bobcats defeated the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen 85-75 Thursday evening in Brandon.

Dany Charlery led Brandon with a game high 31 points. Charlery also hauled in nine rebounds and added five assists and three steals. Rejean Chabot added 24 points and six rebounds.

Mike James led the Wesmen with 14 points and 10 rebounds. James Horaska also finished with 14 points, including a pair of three pointers and came up with two steals. Nick Lother added 14 points and four assists. Jeff Shynkaryk also figured in double digits scoring 10 points.

Winnipeg came out on fire building a quick 5-0 lead 1:50 into the opening quarter. The Bobcats answered back scoring 13 unanswered points in a span of just over two minutes to take a 13-5 lead. Brandon led 24-15 after the opening quarter.

The Wesmen settled down ad gained their composure in the second quarter outscoring the hometown Bobcats 22-16 to cut the Brandon lead to 40-37 at halftime.

The third quarter was a classic defensive battle with neither team giving the other any easy baskets. The Wesmen once again outscored Brandon 19-18 to only trail 58-56 heading into the final quarter.

Winnipeg made several charges in the final frame only to see Brandon answer back every time. Brandon held a 80-75 lead with 45 seconds left and managed to seal the victory sinking five consecutive free throws with time winding down.

"We missed some shots down the stretch, they made theirs which was the difference, it was a tough road game and we will look to turn it around on home court Sunday night", said Wesmen Head Coach Dave Crook.

The victory improves Brandon's record to 11-8 and in first place in the Great Plains Division. Winnipeg remains in third place in the division with a record of 5-14, two points ahead of the Manitoba Bisons for the final playoff spot in the division.

Winnipeg will host the Bobcats Sunday evening at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 8:00 p.m. and will be carried live on 1290 CFRW.

UBC def WESMEN 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14)

T-BIRDS DOWN WESMEN IN THREE

The fifth ranked UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Third year middle Jen Hinze and second year right side Kyla Richey led UBC with 10 kills each. Third year libero Claire Hanna had a match high 23 defensive digs. Fifth year middle Marisa Field finished with three blocks on the evening.

Fourth year left side Marlee Bragg led the Wesmen with seven kills. First year right/left side Ariel Smith had six kills and 10 defensive digs. Lauren Sear, second year middle had two blocks in the contest. Libero Devyn DeGagne led the team with 11 defensive digs.

UBC started the match on the right foot scoring five straight points to take a 5-0 lead early on. The Thunderbirds led 8-2 at the first technical timeout. The Wesmen were able to make adjustments after the break going on a 6-1 run to close the UBC lead to 9-8. UBC regained their composure outscoring Winnipeg 7-1 to take a 16-9 lead at the second technical timeout. The Wesmen made a charge late in the set but UBC hung on to win the first set 25-19.

In the second set UBC reeled off four straight points to help them to a 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. The T-Birds were able to take advantage of a pair of Wesmen service errors to help them to a 16-12 lead at the second timeout. UBC would eventually go on to take control of the match winning the second set 25-18.

The fifth ranked T-Birds showed their dominance in the third set building leads of 8-3 and 16-8 at the technical timeouts. UBC went on to outscore the Wesmen 9-6 to close out the set with a 25-14 win.

The victory improves UBC'S record to 12-5 while the loss drops the Wesmen's record to 1-16. The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

TOWN LEADS WESMEN TO VICTORY OVER UBC

Andrew Town did a little bit of everything on this night to help the Wesmen pull out a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20) victory over the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Town, a fourth year outside led the Wesmen with a team high 21 kills and 13 defensive digs, two blocks and one service ace. Third year middle Justin Duff was also solid for the Wesmen finishing with 10 kills, three blocks and two service aces.

Fifth year leftside Steve Gotch led UBC with a match high 22 kills and added 12 defensive digs. Blair Bann had nine kills and 13 defensive digs. Jared Kraude and Joe Cordonier each had three blocks.

Winnipeg came out of the gate in impressive fashion in the first set leasding 8-6 and expanded their lead to 16-10 at the technical timeouts. The T-Birds tried to get back into the set but Winnipeg responded everytime UBC would gain a point. Winnipeg went on to win the first set in impressive fashion 25-18. Winnipeg had an attack percentage of .600 in the opening set while comitting only one attack error.

The T-Birds were able to regroup in the second set leading at both technical timeouts by scores of 8-4 and 16-12. Winnipeg made the set interesting scoring six unanswered points to take a 18-16 lead in the set. The T-Birds took advantage of six Wesmen errors to go on a 9-3 to close out the set. UBC evened the match winning the second set 25-21.

The third set was a close affair all the way between the two teams. UBC held a slim 8-7 lead at the first timeout only to see the Wesmen comeback to take the lead at 16-15 after the second break. The teams exchanged points to 23-22 in Winnipeg's favour when a UBC service error and a big kill by Alan Ahow gave the Wesmen the third set 25-22.

The Wesmen grabbed an early 8-5 lead at the first technical of the fourth set only to see the stubborn T-Birds race back to take a 16-15 lead at the second technical timeout. Winnipeg turned on the jets after the timeout with four kills by Andrew Town combined with two by Alan Ahow to give the Wesmen the fourth set 25-20 to close out the match.

The win improves Winnipeg's record to 8-7 and in a tie with UBC in the tight Canada West Conference standings. The two teams will close out their weekend series on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.

UBC DOWN WESMEN, SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES

The visiting UBC Thunderbirds earned a weekend split with a 3-1 ( 25-23, 23-25, 26-24, 25-20) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Wesmen defeated the Thunderbirds 3-1 in Friday's opening match of the weekend series.

Steve Gotch led UBC with a match high 18 kills. Kyle Dupperon added 14 kills and Robert Bennett contributed 13 kills, two service aces and two blocks. Blair Bann finished with a match high 14 defensive digs.

Alan Ahow led the Wesmen with 17 kills, five digs, and four blocks. Andrew Town, Justin Duff and Danny Andres each had 11 kills. Paul Kjos followed with 10 kills. Duff was solid in the middle collecting six blocks in the match.

The Thunderbirds put last nights result out of their minds early on leading 8-6 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. UBC held on to a three or four point lead down the stretch until the Wesmen closed the gap to 22-21. The teams exchanged kills to make the score 23-22 when Steve Gotch put away two kills to help UBC win the opening set 25-23.

The teams exchanged points for the beginning portion of the second set and ended up tied at 5-5 when the Wesmen scored three unanswered points to take a 8-5 lead into the first technical timeout. Winnipeg continued to put the pressure on UBC and led at the second technical 16-13. UBC cut into the Wesmen lead late in the set and only trailed 22-21. The teams exchanged points to tie the score at 23-23 when a big kill down the middle by Justin Duff followed by a service ace by Dan Lother gave the Wesmen the second set by a score of 25-23.

In the third set the Wesmen gained the early advantage leading 8-5 at the first technical timeout. UBC cut into the Wesmen lead at 13-11 and shortly afterwards outscored the Wesmen 5-1 to take a 16-14 lead at the second technical timeout. The teams exchanged points to 24-24 when UBC closed out the set with two kills to win the third set 26-24. 

UBC gained the upper hand in the fourth set leading at both timeouts by scores of 8-7 and 16-14. The Thunderbirds were able to answer back every time the Wesmen tried to grab the lead with a point of their own. UBC outscored the Wesmen 9-6 down the stretch to win the fourth set 25-20.

The victory improves UBC's record to 9-7. Winnipeg's record sits at 8-8. UBC will close out the regular season at home next weekend against the Brandon Bobcats. The Wesmen will conclude the regular season with a home and home series against the Manitoba Bisons, beginning Thursday night at the U of M in the volleyball portion of the Duckworth Challenge. The scene will shift to the Duckworth Centre next Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.

WESMEN PUT UP FIGHT, UBC BEATS WESMEN IN THREE

The Winnipeg Wesmen put up a good fight and forced the fifth ranked UBC Thunderbirds to play their best on this night. UBC defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-22) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Danielle Peterson led UBC with a match high 11 kills. Kyla Richey added 10 kills. Claire Hanna led the Thunderbirds with 22 defensive digs. Marisa Field was a force at the net with five blocks.

Marlee Bragg led the Wesmen with 10 kills and two service aces. Libero Devyn DeGagne led the team with 14 defensive digs. Alix Krahn and Lauren Sears each had three blocks.

The Thunderbirds continued where they left off last night leading at both technical timeouts by scores of 8-5 and 16-13. Winnipeg responded after the second break outscoring UBC 6-2 to take a 19-18 lead late in the first set. The hard fought first set continued and was tied at 20-20 and 22-22. UBc scored the final two points of the set to win the iopening set 25-23.

In the second set UBC reeled off five quick points right off the bat and led 8-3 at the first technical timeout. Winnipeg was unable to gain any ground as UBC led 16-7 at the second technical timeout of the set. The T-Birds gained control of the match winning the second set 25-16.

Winnipeg came out on fire in set number three building a 6-0 lead and led 8-3 at the first technical timeout. UBC used the timeout to their advantage as they proceeded to outscore Winnipeg 7-2 to tie the score at 10-10. UBC went on to lead at the second break 16-15 and closed out the match with a 25-22 third set victory.

The victory improves UBC's record to 13-5. The Wesmen sit with a record of 1-17. The Thunderbirds will host Brandon next weekend. The Wesmen will conclude the regular season with a home and home series against the Manitoba Bisons, beginning Thursday night at the U of M in the volleyball portion of the Duckworth Challenge. GOOCH LEADS WESMEN TO VICTORY OVER BRANDON

Third year guard Catie Gooch scored a game high 22 points to lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 78-60 victory over the Brandon Bobcats Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth centre.

Gooch scored 20 points in the first half, including four-three pointers to pace the Wesmen early on.

Amy Ogidan had a double-double for the Wesmen scoring 17 points and adding 10 rebounds.

Stephanie Lacey-Avon led the Bobcats with 15 points. Sarah Lopes and Nicisha Johnson added 10 points each.

Brandon had the early momentum in the contest leading 12-9 at the midway point of the opening quarter. The Wesmen tied the game at 14-14 on a long three pointer by Catie Gooch with 3:06 left in the quarter. Sarah Reilly converted a three point play with 2:36 to play to give the Wesmen their first lead of the game 17-14. Winnipeg led 23-16 at the end of the first quarter.

Gooch continued her hot shooting in the second quarter draining two-three pointers in the opening two minutes to extend the Wesmen lead to 29-16. Winnipeg continued to klead by double-digits for the remainder of the half leading 39-26 at halftime.

Winnipeg did not let up in the second half connecting on 48% from the field and outscored the Bobcats 39-34 for the victory.

The victory improves the Wesmen's record to 12-8.  Brandon falls to 1-19 on the season. Winnipeg will host Simon Fraser (20-1) on Friday night and conclude the regular season against Trinity Western on Saturday (11-10) at the Duckworth Centre. Game time both nights is 6:00 p.m. Brandon will wrap up their regular season schedule with a weekend series in Regina against the first place Cougars (16-4).

WESMEN COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

The Brandon Bobcats fought off a late charging Winnipeg Wesmen team to post a 68-64 victory Sunday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

Brandon led by 18 points with 3:50 to play in the third quarter only to see the Wesmen score 11 of the next 13 points to trail 56-47 after three quarters.

The two provincial rivals played an even opening quarter with neither team leading by more than two points for a majority of the opening frame. The teams were tied at 16-16 after the opening ten minutes.

Winnipeg came out on fire in the second quarter outscoring the Bobcats 11-2 3:30 into the third quarter. Bobcat Head Coach Keith Vassell quickly called a timeout and his team responded scoring eight unanswered points to take a 28-27 lead. Nick Lother pulled the Wesmen ahead with a three pointer only to see Dany Charlerey answer back with a three pointer of his own to give Brandon a 31-30 lead. Brandon went into the halftime break leading 35-32.

Brandon exploded in the first five minutes of the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 16-3 to take a 51-35 lead at the midway point of the third quarter. The Wesmen cued their comeback from that point outscoring Brandon 12-5 to cut the Brandon lead to 56-47 after three quarters.

The Wesmen continued to mount a challenge in the final frame cutting the Bobcat lead to as little as three points with just over 1:00 to play. Tarik Tokar converted a pair of free throws to give the Bobcats a 67-62 lead with 12 seconds to secure the road win for the Bobcats.

The win improves Brandons record to 12-8 and in first place in the Great Plains Division, two points ahead of the Regina Cougars (11-9). Brandon will head to Regina for a two game series on Friday and Saturday. Winnipeg sits with a record of 5-15, two points up on the Manitoba Bisons for the third and final playoff spot in the Great Plains Division. Winnipeg will wrap up their regular season schedule at home against Simon Fraser (12-9) on Friday and Trinity Western (15-6) on Saturday.
