COUGARS DOWN WESMEN IN FIRST PLACE SHOWDOWN
The fourth ranked Regina Cougars defeated the host and eighth ranked Winnipeg Wesmen 71-62 in a battle between the top two teams in the Great Plains Division Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Regina was led by second year centre Brittany Read's game high 20 points, including a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line. Third year guard Gabrielle Gheyssen added 16 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Jessica Lynch led the Cougars in rebounding with a game high 12 boards.
Fourth year forward Jessica Stromberg led the Wesmen with 15 points, including a pair of three pointers. Catie Gooch added 14 points, four assists and four steals. Sarah Reilly finished with 10 points and a team leading seven rebounds.
Winnipeg started the game on a good note leading 18-15 after the opening quarter. The Cougars made adjustments in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 21-9 in the quarter to hold a 36-27 lead at the halftime break. The Wesmen suffered a huge blow as third year post Alex MacIver suffered a leg injury late in the first quarter and will be evaluated.
"We played hard this evening, it was very tough losing a player like Alex MacIver", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.
In the third quarter the Cougars carried the play for the first five minutes holding a lead of 42-35, when the Wesmen went on a roll to cut into the Regina lead. A long three pointer by Catie Gooch cut the Cougar lead to 42-38. Regina went on to score two unanswered baskets to take a 46-38 lead with just over three minutes to play in the third quarter. The Wesmen did not quit outscoring the Cougars 7-2 down the stretch to cut the Regina lead to 48-45 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter Regina was able to extend their lead to nine points at 63-54 with over four minutes to play. A three pointer by Jessica Stromberg cut the Regina lead to 65-61 with 2:40 left in regulation. The Cougars would go on to sink six free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
The victory improves Regina's record to 13-4, six points up on the second place Wesmen who fall to 10-7. The two teams will meet for the series finale Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN 77 Regina 64
WESMEN BEAT COUGARS TO SNAP LOSING STREAK
A total team effort carried the Winnipeg Wesmen to an impressive 77-64 victory over the Regina Cougars Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Three Winnipeg players figured in double digits to help the Wesmen snap a four game losing skid.
"I thought we played well in all phases of the game and limited Regina any easy baskets", said Wesmen Head Coach Dave Crook.
Nick Lother led the way with a game high 20 points, including four three pointers. Lother also finished with seven assists. Mike James had one of his better games of the season scoring 18 points. Peter Lomuro finished with 16 points, including a trio of three-pointers, four assists and four steals. Jeff Shynkaryk was brilliant on the boards hauling down a team high nine rebounds.
Jeff Lukomski led the Cougars with 16 points. Jamal Williams finished with 15 points and nine rebounds. Kris Heshka added 13 points in the loss.
Winnipeg held the early advantage leading by a slim margin of 16-15 after the opening ten minutes of play. The Wesmen pulled away in the second quarter outscoring the Cougars 24-15 in the quarter to take a 40-30 lead into halftime.
In the second half the Wesmen continued to shoot well from the field connecting on 14-of-32 (44%) of their shots and played strong defense holding the Cougars to 34% from the field and only allowing 34 points in the final twenty minutes.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 4-13 and pulls the Wesmen into a third place tie with the Manitoba Bisons for the third and final playoff spot in the Great Plains division. The loss drops the Cougars record to 9-8, currently in a tie with the Brandon Bobcats for first place in the division.
The Wesmen and Cougars will square off in the second game of the weekend series Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

Alberta def WESMEN 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-23)
UNBEATEN ALBERTA SWEEPS WESMEN
The number one ranked and unbeaten Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-23) in a match featuring the last two CIS National Champions, Friday night in Edmonton.
Tim Gourlay led the Golden Bears with a match high 12 kills. Spencer Leiske was strong at the net finishing the match with six blocks.
Andrew Town led the Wesmen with 11 kills followed by Alan Ahow and Justin Duff each with six kills. Duff added five blocks and Ahow also led the team with five defensive digs.
Alberta led at both timeouts in the opening set by scores of 8-6 and 16-10. The Golden Bears extended their lead further outscoring the Wesmen 9-4 down the stretch to win the first set 25-14.
The second set was closer than the opening set. Albert held on to slim leads of 8-7 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. Alberta would eventually go on to win the second set 25-21.
The Wesmen battled in the third set. Alberta held onto a 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout but the Wesmen stormed back to take a 16-15 lead the second break. The Wesmen were able to run the score to 21-20 and seemed to have momentum on their side until Alberta went on a 5-2 run to close out the match with a 25-23 third set win.
"We played close in the last set and half bu there is little room for error against Alberta and we made too many", said Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.
The win improves Alberta's record to 15-0. Winnipeg drops their third match in a row and currently sit with a record of 7-6.
The two teams will meet again on Saturday night. Match time is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Winnipeg time.

WESMEN START STRONG, LOSE TO ALBERTA IN FOUR
The Winnipeg Wesmen started strong but were unable to finish that way dropping a 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-17) decision to the Alberta Pandas Friday night in Edmonton.
Tiffany Proudfoot led Alberta with a match high 14 kills. Alexa Berton finished with 12 kills and four blocks. Allison Ritter had 18 defensive digs for the Pandas.
First year left side Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 13 kills. Marlee Bragg finished the match with 12 kills. Libero Tessa Peterson finished with 10 defensive digs. First year setter Amanda Bakker had 32 set assists and two service aces.
Winnipeg played a solid first set racing out to leads of 8-6 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. The teams battled back and forth until the Wesmen would eventually go on to win the opening set 25-22.
The Pandas regrouped in a big way in set number two holding substantial leads of 8-3 and 16-6 at the technical timeouts. The Pandas would go on to win the second set 25-14 to even the match.
The Pandas continued their domination in the third set holding a lead of 8-5 at the first timeout and doubling their lead to 16-10 at the second technical. Alberta was able to win the third set 25-19.
Winnipeg continued to fight in the fourth set holding a slim lead of 8-7 at the first set break only to see the Pandas storm back to take the lead at 16-14 at the second technical timeout. Alberta would go on a 9-3 run to close out the match set with a 25-17 win in the fourth set.
The victory improves Alberta's record to 13-4. Winnipeg's record falls to 1-14. The two teams will square off tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. (Winnipeg Time) in the series finale.

WESMEN 44 Regina 68
COUGARS BEAT WESMEN TO SWEEP WEEKEND SERIES
The Regina Cougars completed a two game sweep against the Winnipeg Wesmen with a convincing 68-44 victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Cougars won the opening game of the weekend series Friday night downing the Wesmen 71-62.
Winnipeg did manage to keep pace with regina in the opening quarter leading 16-15 after the opening frame.
The Cougars got into rhythm in the second quarter opening up the frame on a 10-2 run to hold a 25-18 lead with 5:37 to play in the quarter. The teams would go on to exchange baskets for the remainder of the quarter and the Cougars went into halftime with a 32-24 lead.
The third quarter opened up as the previous one with Regina scoring six straight points to extend their lead to 38-24 with over eight minutes to play. Third year guard Catie Gooch tried to carry the Wesmen on her shoulders scoring seven points in the quarter burt the Cougars outscored the Wesmen 18-12 to take a 50-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
Winnipeg was unable to close the gap and watched as the Cougars simply overpowered them in this contest. The Cougars outrebounded the Wesmen by a margin of 49-25. Winnipeg was playing without injured post Alex MacIver who sat out the contrest with a leg injury suffered in last night's game.
Carmen Stewart and Chelsea Cassano led Regina with 15 points. Stewart, Jessica Lynch and Brittany Read each had nine rebounds for the Cougars.
Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 14 points, four steals. Amy Ogidan scored 10 points. Jessica Stromberg had a team leading seven rebounds.
The victory improves Regina's record to 14-4 to remain in first place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen fall to 10-8 good for second place in the division.
The Cougars will host the Manitoba Bisons on Friday and Saturday. Winnipeg will travel to Brandon on Thursday night for a game with the Bobcats.

DETERMINED WESMEN TEAM UPEND COUGARS
A determined and confident Winnipeg Wesmen team upended the Regina Cougars 64-62 Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg was coming off an impressive victory the previous night and was hoping to keep the momentum on their side.
"It was big for us to get a sweep, the kids played hard for a full 80 minutes and are fully deserving of these two wins", said a relieved Wesmen Head Coach Dave Crook.
Winnipeg started the contest on a positive note running out to a quick 8-1 lead 3:40 into the opening quarter. The Wesmen continued to leadmaintaing a seven point lead at 13-6 with just over four minutes to play. The Cougars would cut into the Wesmen lead going on a 7-3 run to trail 16-13 after the opening quarter.
The Wesmen stormed out of the gate in the second quarter scoring eight of the first ten points to extend their lead to 24-15 with 6:47 left. The Cougars did manage to cut the Wesmen lead to seven points but Winnipeg answered aback every time and were able to take a 36-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Regina made a move in the third quarter, a Jeff Lukomski three pointer with under four minutes to play cut the Wesmen lead to 41-38. The teams would go on to exchange baskets and free throws for the closing two minutes with Winnipeg holding on to a 49-44 lead after three quarters.
Winnipeg held on to a three point cushion for a majority of the final frame until a wild final two minutes. A basket by James Horaska gave the Wesmen a 61-58 lead with 2:15 left to play, Lukomski answered back with a two pointer to cut the Wesmen lead to 61-60. On the following possession Peter Lomuro of the Wesmen hit a clutch jump shot with 54 seconds left to give Winnipeg a 63-60 lead. Marek Downarowicz answered back for the Cougars with a two pointer with six seconds left to make the score 63-62. Nickm Lother would sink one of two free throws with three seconds left to clinch the win for the Wesmen.
Nick Lother led Winnipeg with 24 points, four three pointers, three assists and three steals. Mike James had a solid game scoring 16 points and hauling down a team high nine rebounds. James Horaska fionished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Kris Heshka led the Cougars with 20 points and added 11 rebounds. Jamal Williams scored 12 points and hauled in a game high 13 rebounds. Jeff Lukomski finished the game with 10 points.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 5-13 and in sole possession of third place in the Great Plains Division. Regina evens their record with the loss to 9-9 and in second place.
Winnipeg will travel to Brandon on Thursday night to take on the division leading Bobcats. Regina will play host to the Manitoba Bisons on Friday and Saturday.

PANDAS SWEEP WESMEN IN THREE
The number four ranked Alberta Pandas completed a weekend sweep with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-10) victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night in Edmonton.
Alberta beat the Wesmen 3-1 in the series opener Friday evening.
The Pandas led at both technical timeouts in the opening set by scores of 8-7 and 16-11. A 9-4 run down the stretch gave the Pandas the opening set by a score of 25-15.
In the second set Alberta continued to dominate leading 8-4 at the first timeout and expanding their lead to 16-9 at the second break of the set. Alberta would eventually go on to win the set 25-14.
The Pandas did not let up in the third set leading 8-2 and 16-5 at the technical timouts and would go on to win the match with a 25-10 win in the third set.
Jocelyn Blair and Alexa Berton led the Pandas with eight kills each. Blair led the team with seven defensive digs and Berton added four blocks.
Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with a match high nine kills, eight defensive digs. Marlee Bragg led the Wesmen with four blocks.
The victory improves Alberta's record to 14-4. Winnipeg's record falls to 1-15. Winnipeg will host UBC on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

GOLDEN BEARS DOWN WESMEN IN FOUR TOUGH SETS
The Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21) in a classic battle Saturday night in Edmonton.
The Wesmen started the contest on a strong note holding a slim 8-6 lead the first technical timeout, only to see the Golden Bears fight back to take a 16-15 lead at the second break. Alberta would go on to win the opening set 25-20.
Winnipeg once again held a 8-6 lead the first timeout of the second set but were able to extend their lead to 16-12 at the second break on their way to a 25-19 set two win and tie the match at one.
In the third set Winnipeg took a 8-7 lead into the first technical but Albert would go on a 9-4 run to take a 16-12 lead at the second technical. Alberta would go on to win the third set 25-22.
Things looked to be going Winnipeg's way in the fourth set. The Wesmen held leads of 8-6 and 16-14 at both timeouts. The Golden Bears would turn things around in their favour outscoring the Wesmen 11-5 to win the fourth set 25-21.
" A strong team like Alberta and making very few mistakes are the difference", said Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.
Joel Schmuland led Alberta with 16 kills. Mike DeRocco finished with 48 assists and nine defensive digs. Spencer Leiske added six blocks.
Andrew Town led the Wesmen with a match high 18 kills. Justin Duff added 12 kills to go along with three blocks. Chad Rempel led the Wesmen with nine defensive digs.
The win keeps Alberta unbeaten at 16-0. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to an even 7-7 in the tought Canada West Conference standings. Winnipeg will host UBC on Friday and Saturday nights at the Duckworth Centre.
