DINOS  SWEEP WESMEN

The number four ranked University of Calgary Dinos defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-17) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The teams were tied at 2-2 in the first set when Calgary scored six points to take a 8-2 lead at the first technical timeout. The Dinos continued to carry the play extending their lead to 16-7 at the second technical timeout. Calgary was in position to close out the set at 24-14, when the Wesmen reeled off four straight points to close the gap to 24-18. A Winnipeg service error gave Calgary the first set 25-18.

In the second set Calgary continued their domination leading 8-3 and 16-7 at the breaks. Winnipeg would get no closer than ten points with Calgary winning the second set 25-14.

The third set started out more evenly then the previous two. Calgary held a slim 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout. The Wesmen played inspired ball after the timeout led by key blocks by Ariel Smith and Alix Krahn and timely kills by Lauren Sears and Marlee Bragg enabled the Wesmen to take the lead 16-15 at the second timeout. Calgary regrouped in a big way going on a 9-1 run to close out the match winning the third set 25-17.

Lauren Perry led Calgary with a match high 11 kills and two service aces. Laura Wilson and Holly Harper each finished with 10 kills. Raynell Lavertu finished with a match high 15 defensive digs.

Lauren Sears led the Wesmen with seven kills. Marlee Bragg contributed six kills. Ariel Smith led the team with nine defensive digs. Alix Krahn had two blocks in the middle position.

The victory improves Calgary's record to 10-3. The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 1-12. The two teams will wrap up their two match series Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Calgary def WESMEN 3-1 (22-25, 35-33, 25-21, 25-16)

CALGARY BEATS WESMEN IN CANADA WEST BATTLE

The third ranked Calgary Dinos defeated the number six ranked Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (22-25, 35-33, 25-21, 25-16) Friday night in a Canada West conference battle in Calgary.

The Wesmen played a strong first set showing grit and character. After Calgary led 8-4 at the first technical timeout Winnipeg went on a roll outscoring Calgary 12-7 to take a 16-15 lead at the second technical timeout. Andrew Town and Justin Duff each pounded home a pair of kills to lead the Wesmen to a 25-22 opening set win.

In a classic second set, Calgary led 8-7 at the first break only to watch Winnipeg take the lead at 16-14 at the second technical timeout. The teams would continue to exchange points all the way to a score of 33-33, when a kill by Calgary's Andrew Tallas followed by a service ace gave the Dinos a 35-33 set two win to square the match.

Calgary carried their momentum into the third set leading 8-7 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg would tie the set at 17-17 on a Andrew Town kill before calgary would go on a set ending 8-4 run to win the third set 25-21.

In the fourth set Calgary raced out to a quick 8-4 lead at the first technical and expanded their lead to 16-10 at the second break. Winnipeg would try to claw their way back into the set but only to have the Dinos answer every Wesmen point with a point of their own. Calagry went on to win the fourth set 25-16.

"We played well for one and a half sets then our defense and serve receive was not good enough", said Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.

Omar Langford led Calgary with 17 kills. Andrew Tallas finished with a match high 10 defensive digs. Oleg Podporin was strong at the net with eight blocks.

Winnipeg was led by Andrew Town's match high 20 kills. Justin Duff added 13 kills and finished the match with an attack percentage of .667. Alan Ahow finished with eight defensive digs. Middle blocker Maurice Williams added four blocks.

The victory improves Calgary's record to 10-3. Winnipeg falls to 7-4 and in a tie for third place in the Canada West Conference standings. The two teams will meet in the series finale Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. (Winnipeg Time)

WESMEN STRUGGLE IN LOSS TO UBC

Head Coach Tanya McKay and her squad tasted defeat for the first time in 2009. The Wesmen struggled in a 62-53 loss to the UBC Thunderbirds Friday night in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The sixth ranked Wesmen had the lead at halftime in the contest by a score of 27-25 but second half shooting problems were the downfall for the team.

The Wesmen combnined for 6-of-28 (21%) shooting in the second half and saw UBC shoot the lights out at 54% in the second half in which the Thunderbirds outscored the Wesmen 37-26 for the victory.

Winnipeg playing without an injured Alex MacIver was outrebounded 43-42 by UBC.

"We really missed Alex in the paint, UBC controlled the boards", said Head Coach Tanya McKay.

Zara Huntley led UBC with a game high 20 points. Leanne Evans had a double-double 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 13 points. Jessica Stromberg added 10 points and nine rebounds. Amy Ogidan scored nine points, hauled in nine rebounds and dished out five assists.

The win improves UBC's record to 7-9. Winnipeg drops to 10-5 and remain in second place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen are now four points back of the first place Regina Cougars (12-3). Winnipeg will travel to Victoria to take on the Vikes (10-6) Saturday night.

WESMEN NO MATCH FOR UBC

The third ranked UBC Thunderbirds handed the Winnipeg Wesmen a 98-58 loss Friday night in Vancouver, British Columbia.
 
The hometown T-Birds turned a close game after one quarter into a blow out. The T-Birds led  22-14 after the opening quarter but outscored the Wesmen 21-7 in the second quarter to gain complete control of the game with a 43-21 lead at halftime.

UBC continued to show no mercy in the second half outscoring the Wesmen 55-37 to complete the lopsided victory.

The TBirds finished the contest shooting 50% from the field, compared to 35% for Winnipeg. UBC was the dominant team in the rebounding department outrebounding the Wesmen 44-29 in the contest.

Chris Dyck led UBC with 15 points, including two-three pointers.

Peter Lomuro led the Wesmen with 12 points and seven rebounds. Mike James and Chris Jordan finished with 11 points each.

UBC with the win improves to 14-2 on the season. Winnipeg falls to 3-12, two points behind the Manitoba Bisons (4-11) for third place and the final playoff spot in the Great Plains Division. Winnipeg will take on the Victoria Vikes (11-5) Saturday night in Victoria.

CALGARY BEAT WESMEN IN FOUR SETS

The Calgary Dinos completed a two match sweep against the Winnipeg Wesmen with a 3-1 (25-13, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16) Saturday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The fourth ranked Dinos won the opening match of the weekend series Friday night sweeping the Wesmen 3-0.

Calgary started this evening’s match where they left off last night dominating the opening set. The Dinos led 8-4 at the first technical timeout and increased their lead to 16-8 at the second break of the opening set. Calgary pushed their lead to 18-11 and reeled off five straight points to expand their lead to double-digits at 22-11. Calgary would go on to win the opening set 25-13.

In the second set Calgary looked to have the set in control leading 8-6 and 16-11 at the technical breaks. The Dinos expanded their lead to seven at 21-14 when a determined Wesmen team showed true grit going on an impressive 11-2 run to win the second set 25-23 and even the match at one set each.

The Wesmen were not able to carry the momentum into the third set. Calgary raced out to an 8-3 lead the first technical and continued to lead holding a 16-10 at the second break. The Dinos would outscore the Wesmen 9-6 down the stretch to win the third set 25-16.

The fourth and final set was a carbon copy of the previous set. Calgary led at both technical timeouts by scores of 8-3 and 16-10. Calgary would go on to win the fourth and final set by a score of 25-16.

Holly Harper led the Dinos with a match high 17 kills. Fifth year left side Lauren Perry had a strong match with 13 kills, 14 defensive digs, two service aces and two blocks. Laura Wilson had 11 kills and 15 defensive digs. 

The Wesmen were led by fourth year left side Marlee Bragg’s 12 kills. First year sensation Ariel Smith finished with nine kills, 10 defensive digs, two service aces and three blocks. Second year middle Lauren Sears finished the match with seven kills. First year libero Tessa Peterson had a match high 16 defensive digs.

The victory improves Calgary’s record to 11-3 on the season. Winnipeg’s record sits at 1-13. Winnipeg will travel to Edmonton next weekend to take on the Alberta Pandas. Calgary will travel to Brandon to take on the Bobcats for two matches.

VIKES UPEND WESMEN ON THE COAST

The number nine seed University of Victoria Vikes defeated the number six seed University of Winnipeg Wesmen 69-56 Saturday evening on the west coast in Victoria, British Columbia.

The Wesmen struggled with their shooting from the field for the second consecutive game. Winnipeg connected on seven-of-30 (23%) of their shots in the opening half that saw Victoria lead by a score of 36-23 at halftime.

Winnipeg improved their shooting in the second half connecting on 35% of their shots from the field and was able to keep pace with the Vikes in an even second half with both teams scoring 33 points.

Jane Anholt led Victoria with a game high 20 points. Kayla Dykstra finished with a double-double 16 points and 15 rebounds.

Jessica Stromberg was the Wesmen leader scoring 18 points and hauling in 11 rebounds.

Winnipeg was playing the second consecutive game without injured post Alex MacIver and she once again was missed as Victoria out-rebounded the Wesmen 47-38 in the contest.

The victory improves the Vikes record to 11-6. Winnipeg suffers their second loss in a row and now sits with a record of 10-6 and in second place in the Great Plains Division. Winnipeg will host the division leading Regina Cougars on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Game time both nights is 6:00 p.m.

Calgary def WESMEN 3-1 (25-22, 14-25, 28-26, 25-15)

DINOS REBOUND TO DOWN WESMEN

The Calgary Dinos defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-22,14-25,28-26, 25-14) Saturday night in Calgary,Alberta.

The victory by the Dinos completes a two match sweep over the Wesmen. Cagary defeated Winnipeg by an identical 3-1 score Friday night.

Calgary started the first set on the right foot leading 8-6 and 16-15 at the technicaltimeouts. The two teams battled until Calgary was able to pull away scoring the decisive points winning the first set by a score of 25-22.

Winnipeg was able to regroup in the second set leading at both timeouts by scores of 8-6 and 16-12. Winnipeg continued their domination after the second break outscoring Calgary 9-2 to even the match with a 25-14
second set win.

The match turning third set started in Winnipeg's favour leading 8-4 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg scored two more points to expand their lead to 18-10, when Calgary turned the tide in their favour going on a 10-2 run to tie the score at 20-20. The teams exchanged points to 26- 26 when Calgary's Oleg Podporin came thru with a big kill to give Calgary a 27-26 lead. A Winnipeg attack error on the next play gave Calgary the third set by a score of 28-26.

The momentum was on Calgary'side in the fourth set jumping out to leads of 8-5 and 16-12 at the set breaks. Calgary kept Winnipeg off balance outscoring the Wesmen 9-2 down the stretch to close out the match with a 25-14 fourth set win.

"We defended well, we just need to fix a few things, but we were very close tonight", said Head Coach Larry McKay.

Andrew Tallas led Calgary with a match high 18 kills. Omar Langford was next with 13 kills ans eight defensive digs.

The Wesmen were led by Andrew Town's team high 15 kills and eight defensive digs. Paul Kjos had nine kills. Alan Ahow finished with eight kills and eight defensive digs.

The victory improves Calgary's record to 11-3. Winnipeg's record falls to 7-5 in the tough Canada West conference standings.

Winnipeg will be on the road next weekend in Edmonton to face the Canada West conference leaders the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday and Saturday nights.

VIKES TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WESMEN SLOW START

The Victoria Vikes got off to a great start and did not look back. The Vikes defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 76-55 Saturday night in Victoria, British Columbia.

The Vikes led 20-11 after the opening quarter and outscored the Wesmen 24-9 to take a commanding 44-20 lead into the halftime break.

Winnipeg played a better second half outscoring the Vikes 35-32 but the slow star and 24 point deficit was too much for the Wesmen to overcome on this night.

Tyler Hass led Victoria with a game high 16 points, three assists. Jeff Spoor added 10 points, including a pair of three pointers. Mitch Gudgeon was strong on the boards finishing with 11 rebounds.

Nick Lother led Winnipeg with 14 points. Mike James added a double-double 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Vikes with the win improve to 12-5. Winnipeg falls to 3-13, two points behind the Manitoba Bisons for the third and final playoff spot in the Great Plains Division.

Winnipeg will host the first place Regina Cougars for a pair of games Friday and Saturday nights at the Duckworth Centre. Game time both nights is 8:00 p.m.
