WESMEN FALL TO MANITOBA IN THREE
The seventh ranked Manitoba Bisons defeated their cross town rivals the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-21) Thursday night at the University of Manitoba in the volleyball portion of the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge.
Sarah Morrissette led the Bisons with a match high 13 kills. Kate Wasyliw led the Bisons with 13 defensive digs. Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 11 kills and 12 defensive digs. Brooklyn Brunel had two service aces in the match.The visiting Wesmen squad gained the upper hand in the match early on leading 8-5 at the first technical timeout. The two cross town rivals exchanged points to the second technical timeout with the Wesmen leading 16-15. The Bisons were able to regroup after the timeout scoring five of the next seven points to take a 20-18 lead. The teams played out to a score of 23-21, in Manitoba's favour when the Bisons were able to close out the first set 25-21.
Winnipeg once again gained the early momentum for the start of the second set holding a slim 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. Manitoba quickly regained control of the set soon afterwards, with the Wesmen holding onto a 10-8 lead, Manitoba quickly reeled off five straight points to take a 13-10 lead in the set. Winnipeg was able to fight back scoring four of the next five points to tie the score at 14-14. Erin Nieuwenburg came thru with back to back kills for the Bisons to give Manitoba the lead at 16-14 at the second technical. The Bisons went on to win the second set 25-19.
In the third set Manitoba gained the early lead taking leads of 8-7 at the first technical timeout and doubled up their lead to 16-14 at the second break of the set. The Bisons were able to hold off the Wesmen down the stretch winning the third set 25-21.
"The team had a great performance tonight, I thought we battled well enough to win, I am very proud of the team", said Wesmen Head Coach Diane Scott.
First year right/left side Ariel Smith was named the Winnipeg Wesmen Duckworth Challenge Player of the Game. Kate Wasyliw was named the Duckworth Challenge Player of the Game for Manitoba.
The victory lifts Manitoba's record to 12-7. The Wesmen fall to 1-18. The two teams will meet on Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre to conclude their respective regular season schedules. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

WESMEN SWEEP BISONS, RETAIN DUCKWORTH CHALLENGE TITLE
The Winnipeg Wesmen picked up an impressive 3-0 (25-21, 27-25,25-13) victory over the Manitoba Bisons in the men's volleyball match of the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge at the University of Manitoba Thursday night.
The victory gives the University of Winnipeg a 3-1 victory in the annual challenge between the two universities. Winnipeg retains the Duckworth Challenge plaque for the fifth consecutive year (winning in 2005, followed by ties in (2006, 2007, 2008).
Alan Ahow led the Wesmen with a match high 13 kills and seven defensive digs. Justin Duff was solid with 12 kills and eight blocks. Andrew Town finished with 10 kills and five blocks. Setter Dan Lother had 43 assists and one service ace.
The Bisons were led by Chris Voth with 10 kills. Setter Drew Venables finished with 30 assits and three defensive digs.
Dan Lother and Drew Venables were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game for their respective teams.
"I thought we were impressive tonight and played well, it was a good win for us", said Wesmen Head Coach Larry McKay.
The Bisons, sparked by a boisterous crowd used the home court to their advantage early on in the first set building an 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout. Wesmen head coach Larry McKay soon afterwards called a timeout and it seemed to spark the Wesmen. Winnipeg went on a 5-3 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Bisons made a brief charge as the Wesmen continued to lead 16-13 at the second technical timeout. Fifth year opposite Paul Kjos made his presence felt at the end of the set first coming up with a huge block to extend the Wesmen lead to 24-20 and followed that up with a set winning kill. Winnipeg won the first set 25-21.In the second set Winnipeg looked to keep the momentum on their side and were successfull early on leading 8-5 at the first technical timeout. Manitoba cut into the Wesmen lead with Winnipeg holding on to a 16-15 lead at the second technical break. The teams exchanged points back and forth all the way to 23-23. Justin Duff came thru with a huge kill down the middle to make the score 24-23 and set up set point. First year Bison Chris Voth had a kill to tie the score at 24-24. A Manitoba attack error set up set point #2 for the Wesmen but Dane Pischke tied the score at 25-25 with a kill down the line. Alan Ahow had back to back kills to close out the set with the Wesmen winning a thrilling second set 27-25.
Winnipeg found their A game in the third set racing out to a 8-1 lead at the first technical timeout and extended their lead to 16-5 at the second break of the set. Winnipeg went on to win the third set 25-13.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 9-8 in the tight Canada West Conference standings. Manitoba with the loss falls to 4-13 on the season. The two teams will meet in the regular season finale on Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 3:00 p.m and will be carried live on 1290 CFRW.

HOT SHOOTING CLAN TOO MUCH FOR WESMEN
The number one ranked Simon Fraser University Clan showed why they are presently the top team in the country on this night. The Clan soundly defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 87-56 Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Simon Fraser connected for 14 three-pointers and were sucessful from the field draining 49% of the ir shots in the contest.
Robyn Buna led Simon Fraser with a game high 25 points, including six-three pointers. Matteke Hutzler led the team in rebounds with 11.
Caity Gooch led the Wesmen with 17 points, including three-three pointers. Randie Gibson finished in double digits with 10 points, including a pair from three point range. Jessica Stromberg led the Wesmen in rebounding with seven.
The Clan jumped out to an early 9-2 lead 3:15 into the opening quarter. Randie Gibson responded with an off balanced three pointer to cut the Clan lead to 9-5. Robyn Buna connected on back-to-back three pointers to expand SFU's lead to 15-5. The Wesmen continued to fight, three pointers by Randie Gibson and Catie Gooch cut the Clan lead to 22-17. Simon Fraser led 25-17 after the opening quarter.
Both teams had to scratch and claw for points in the second quarter as the teams were stellar on the defensive end. Simon Fraser outscored Winnipeg 14-10 to take a 39-27 lead into the halftime break.
The Clan started the third quarter on a 10-2 run to extend their even further at 49-29 with under eight minutes to play in the frame. The Clan continued their assault leading 66-40 to start the fourth quarter. Simon Fraser continued to increase their advantage in the final ten minutes, finishing with an 87-56 victory.
"We played hard, SFU is number one for a reason. They are big, strong and talented", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay.
The victory improves Simon Frasers record to 21-1. The team is currently on a 20 game winning streak. Winnipeg with the loss drops to 12-9. Simon Fraser will take on the Manitoba Bisons at the U of M tomorrow night and the Wesmen will wrap up their regular season schedule against the Trinity Western University Spartans. Game time is 6:00 p.m.at the Duckworth Centre.

SLOW START HURTS WESMEN IN LOSS TO SIMON FRASER
A slow start for the Wesmen was the difference in this game as the Simon Fraser University Clan defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 70-62 Friday evening at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg struggled in the first half connecting on 24% of their shots from the field. Simon Fraser went into the halftime break leading 34-19.
Matt Kuzminski led the Clan with 19 points. Greg Wallis finished with a double-double 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Nick Lother led the Wesmen with 19 points (two-three pointers), and five assists. Mike James finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Christopher Jordan and Peter Lomuro each scored 12 points. Lomuro hauled in a team leading nine rebounds.
Simon Fraser carried the play for the start of the game leasding 13-7 at the midway point of the first quarter. A late 8-3 run by the Clan extended their lead to 21-10 after the opening quarter.
The teams got off to a slow start in the second quarter as both teams struggled from the field early on. The Clan managed to hold a double digit lead for the entire second quarter. Winnipeg could only manage to get as close of 10 points at 29-19 with 1:00 left when Simon Fraser reeled off five straight points to head into the locker room leading 34-19.
Simon Fraser came out of the halftime break continuing where they left off. A 12-6 run by the Clan extended their lead to 46-25 at the midway point of the third quarter. Winnipeg could not close the 15 point deficit with Simon Fraser leading 54-37 after three quarters.
Winnipeg did not give up in the fourth quarter going on a 18-10 run in the first 6:00 minutes to close the gap to single digits at 64-55. A three pointer by Nick Lother and basket by Christopher Jordan brought the Wesmen to within six points at 68-62 with 40 seconds left. Simon Fraser sank a pair of free throws to close out the victory.
The victory improves Simon Fraser's record to 13-9. Winnipeg falls to 5-16 but were able to clinch third spot and the final playoff position in the Great Plains Division. Simon Fraser will head across town to take on the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night. Winnipeg will play host to the Trinity Western University Spartans at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN 74 Trinity Western 54WESMEN DEFEAT SPARTANS TO CAP OFF REGULAR SEASON
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen capped off their 2008-09 regular season schedule with an impressive 74-54 victory over the Trinity Western University Spartans Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Five of Winnipeg's players figured in double digits on the evening led by Caity Gooch with 17 points while adding five assists and six steals. Randie Gibson scored 13 points, including three-three pointers and had five assists. Jessica Stromberg finished with a double double 11 points and 12 rebounds. Amy Ogidan and Sarah Reilly each scored 11 points.
Lauren Doubroff and Katie Haworth each led the Spartans with 11 points. Jordan Verhoeff and Lindset Gustafson finished the night with 10 points. Doubroff led the Spartans with nine rebounds.
Trinity Western started the contest on the right foot leading 21-16 after the opening ten minutes of play.
The Wesmen were able to find their groove in the second quarter especially on the defensive end limiting the Spartans to only nine points in the second quarter. Winnipeg outscored Trinity Western 14-9 to tie the score at 30-30 at the halftime break.
The Wesmen blew the game open in the first half of the third quarter running off 12 straight points to take a 42-30 lead at the 5:00 mark of the third quarter. Winnipeg continued to lead in double digits for the remainder of the quarter holding a 58-38 lead after three quarters of play.
Winnipeg continued to put the pressure on the Spartans in the fourth quarter to post a 74-54 victory.
The victory gives the Wesmen a regular season record of 13-8 and second place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen will host their cross town rivals the Manitoba Bisons in the best of three Great Plains Division semi-final series beginning with game one on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game two is scheduled for Friday night and if necessary game three will be played on Saturday evening. Game time is 7:00 p.m. for the entire series. Trinity Western finishes the regular season with a record of 11-12 in the Pacific Division.

SPARTANS DEFEAT WESMEN IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
The Trinity Western University Spartans completed a perfect weekend posting a 74-62 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen in both teams regular season finales at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night.
Jacob Doerksen led the Spartans with a game high 29 points. Guard Louis Hurd finished with 15 points and added six assists. Joe Vroom scored 11 points and hauled in a game high eight rebounds.
Third year guard Nick Lother led the Wesmen with 17 points. Mike James added 16 points and a team leading seven rebounds. Peter Lomuro scored 11 points and added five assists.
The Spartans came out on all cylinders early on in the contest running off six straight points with the game barely two minutes old to take a early 6-0 lead. The Wesmen did not quit and went on a 14-0 run in a 4:00 span to take a 14-6 lead. Winnipeg led 18-9 after the opening quarter.
Winnipeg continued to hold the lead in the second quarter holding a 32-22 lead at the midway point of the quarter but a late 18-7 run by the Spartans gave the visitors a 40-39 lead at halftime.
The Spartans with momentum on their side continued to roll in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen by a margin of 22-10 to take a 62-49 lead after three quarters.
Winnipeg did make a late charge in the fourth quarter cutting the Spartan lead to seven at 70-63 with 43 seconds and soon afterwards the Spartans closed out the contest winning 72-64.
Trinity Western concludes the regular season with a 17-6 record tied with Victoria for second place in the Pacific Division. Winnipeg finishes the regular season in third place in the Great Plains Division with a record of 5-17. Winnipeg will travel to Regina to take on the Cougars in the best of three Great Plains Division semi-final.

BISONS SWEEP WESMEN TO CONCLUDE REGULAR SEASON
The University of Manitoba Bisons wrapped up their regular season schedule with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-10) sweep against the Winnipeg Wesmen Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.
Ashley Voth led Manitoba with a match high 11 kills. Sarah Morrissette led Manitoba with 16 defensive digs. Tricia Mayba had four blocks to lead the team.
First year right/left side Ariel Smith led Winnipeg with seven kills and 13 defensive digs. Lauren Sears had two service aces.
Manitoba took control of the match early on in set number one racing out to a 8-3 lead at the first technical timeout. Manitoba proceeded to score five of the next seven points to take a 13-5 lead midway thru the set. The Bisons kept the pressure on the Wesmen leading 16-9 at the second technical before eventually closing out the first by a score of 25-13.
The Bisons once again had the early momentum in set number two leading 8-3 at the first timeout of the set. Winnipeg responded in a big way after the break going on a 10-2 run to take a 13-10 lead on the Bisons. After a timeout the Bisons regrouped going on a 8-1 run to regain the lead at 18-14. Manitoba would gain complete control of the match with a 25-18 set win.
The Bisons looked to close out the match in the third set and got off to a great start leading at both timeouts 8-5 and 16-8. Manitoba would outscore Winnipeg 9-2 down the stretch to close out the set with a 25-10 win.
The victory gives Manitoba a regular season ending record of 13-7. A tough season for the Wesmen comes to an end with the team finishing with a record of 1-19.

WESMEN BEAT BISONS, PLAYOFFS NEXT
The Winnipeg Wesmen will head to the Canada West Conference playoffs on a good note. The Wesmen defeated their cross town rivals the Manitoba Bisons 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22) in the final regular season match for both teams Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen victory came on a special day as fifth year team members Alan Ahow, Paul Kjos, Andrew Town and therapist Liz Proskurnik all took part in their final home match as a Wesmen. All individuals were presented with a special plaque from Head Coach Larry McKay prior to the match.
Town led the Wesmen attack with 20 kills. Alan Ahow continued his solid play as of late finishing the match with 12 kills, two service aces and two blocks. First year libero Chad Rempel led the Wesmen with seven defensive digs.
Dane Pischke led the Bisons with 13 kills followed by John Galloway with 11 kills. Galloway and Zack Diboll each had three service aces. Steve Goertzen led the Bisons with four blocks. Ryan Munt had six defensive digs to lead Manitoba in that department.
The visiting Bisons looked to make a statement early on grabbing a 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. Manitoba was able to extend their lead to 11-8 when the Wesmen found their game reeling off six straight points to take a 14-11 lead which led to Winnipeg pulling ahead 16-13 at the first technical timeout. A pair of kills by Alan Ahow and Justin Duff down the stretch helped the Wesmen win the first set 25-19.
The second set was a close affair with the Wesmen holding slim leads of 8-6 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen were able to outscore the Bisons 9-7 down the stretch ro take the second set 25-21.
Manitoba showed their perseverance in the third set racing out to a 8-2 lead at the first technical and keeping the Wesmen attack at bay leading 16-10 at the second break of the set. Manitoba got themselves back in the match winning the third set 25-19.
The Wesmen shook off the third set in the fourth leading 8-6 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts. The teams traded points for a good portion soon afterwards but the Wesmen were able to close out the match winning the fourth set 25-22.
Winnipeg finishes the regular season with a record of 10-8. Manitoba finishes with a record of 4-14. The Wesmen will travel to Calgary to take on the Calgary Dinos in the best of three Canada West Conference semi-finals beginning Friday night.
