Men's Basketball (Wesmen Classic)

Bishop's 68  WESMEN 62

WESMEN DROP OPENING GAME AT CLASSIC

The Bishop’s Gaiters defeated the host Winnipeg Wesmen  68-62 in the quarterfinals of the 43rd Annual Wesmen  Classic. Onnex Blackwood led the Gaiters with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Tim Hunter added 14 and Damon Thomas-Anderson added 13 points. Four Wesmen players figured in double digits led by Peter Lomuro’s game high 16 points. James Horaska and Nick Lother  added 11, Mike James finished with 10. Brayden Duff led the Wesmen with eight rebounds. Winnipeg held a slim 32-30 advantage at halftime but the Gaiters outscored Winnipeg 24-17 in the third quarter and held on in the final frame for the victory. Bishop’s will move on to the semi finals to face the winner of the Manitoba-Valley City quarterfinal game on Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m.  Winnipeg will face the loser in the consolation semi finals Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

Brock def WESMEN 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23)

WESMEN FALL TO BROCK IN FOUR

The Brock Badgers defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23) in the opening match of the University of Toronto Invitational Tournament. Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 15 kills and 16 digs. Lauren Sears was solid with 13 kills, five service aces and three blocks. Alix Krahn had two service aces and three blocks. Winnipeg will play two games on Tuesday starting with Dalhousie at 1:30 p.m. followed by the evening match against Toronto at 6:30 p.m.

WESMEN 72 Calgary 67

WESMEN STORM BACK TO BEAT DINOS

The Winnipeg Wesmen erased an 18 point third quarter deficit to defeat the Calgary Dinos 72-67 in the opening game of the University of Calgary Invitational Tournament. Winnipeg trailed 52-34 two minutes into the third quarter but stormed back to outscore Calgary 38-15 to complete the comeback. Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 17 points. Catie Gooch added 16. Alex MacIver finished with 15. MacIver led the team with eight rebounds. Winnipeg will face UNB Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m.

WESMEN 70 Manitoba 78 (Consolation Semi-Final)

BISONS UPEND WESMEN AT CLASSIC

The Manitoba Bisons earned a berth into the consolation final of the 43rd Annual Wesmen Classic after downing the host Winnipeg Wesmen 78-70 in the semi finals Tuesday afternoon. Starting guards Nathan Dixon and Eric Garcia led the Bisons with 20 points each. Garcia and Dixon each drained four-three pointers. Dixon dished out a game high seven assists. Mike James led the Wesmen with 20 points. Peter Lomuro added 18 and Brayden Duff finished with a double-double 10 points and a game high 11 rebounds. The Bisons held a slim 37-36 lead at halftime only to see the Wesmen fight back to take a 53-52 lead after three quarters. Manitoba outscored Winnipeg 26-17 in the final frame. Manitoba will face Minot State in the consolation final Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Winnipeg will take on Thompson Rivers in the seventh place game at 12:00 p.m.

          WESMEN EVEN RECORD AT U OF T INVITATIONAL

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 3-1 (25-20, 25-16, 14-25, 25-22) to even their record to 1-1 at the University of Toronto Invitational Tournament. Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 14 kills and a pair of service aces. Kaelyn Gauthier added 12 kills. Rookie sensation Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen with 16 digs. Alix Krahn had a strong serving match finishing with three service aces.Winnipeg will face the host Toronto Varsity Blues in the evening match at 6:30 p.m.
 
          Toronto def WESMEN 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-19)

          WESMEN FALL TO HOST TORONTO IN THREE

The host Toronto Varsity Varsity Blues defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-19) in the evening match at the University of Toronto Invitational Tuesday night in Toronto. Alix Krahn led the Wesmen with nine kills. Alicia Perry added seven kills and three blocks. Lauren Sears had two service aces. Winnipeg (1-2) will wrap up the tournament Wednesday morning against UNB at 11:00 a.m.

WESMEN 79  UNB 73

WESMEN BEAT UNB TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated UNB 79-73 in the teams second game of the University of Calgary Invitational Tournament Tuesday afternoon. The Wesmen remain the only undefeated team in the tournament with a perfect record of 2-0. Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 18 points, including four three pointers. Jessica Stromberg added 17 points, with three from beyond the arc. Amy Ogidan finished with a double-double 12 points and 10 rebounds. Winnipeg will close out the three day tournament against Victoria Wednesday morning at 11:30 a.m.

WESMEN 70   Thompson Rivers 77

WOLFPACK DOWN WESMEN

The Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 77-70 in the seventh place game at the 43rd Annual Wesmen Classic. Greg Stewart finished the game with a double-double 23 points and 18 rebounds, which ties the record for most rebounds in a Wesmen Classic University game. Gord Tucker finished with 18 rebounds for the Wesmen during the 1985 Wesmen Classic. Sean Garvey added 15 and Drew Bleth finished with 14. Mike James led the Wesmen with 20 points, two blocks and two steals. Nick Lother was next with 14 points. Peter Lomuro added 12 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Thompson Rivers led 39-33 at halftime and extended their lead to 62-47 after outscoring the Wesmen 23-14 in the third quarter. Winnipeg cut the deficit to two late in the fourth quarter but the Wolpack were able to fight off the challenge for the victory. Winnipeg will resume their Canada West regular season schedule on the road next weekend against Fraser Valley on Friday and Thompson Rivers on Saturday.

UNB SWEEP WESMEN AT TORONTO INVITATIONAL
The University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-21) Wednesday afternoon at the University of Toronto Invitational. Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with seven kills and 10 digs. Lauren Sears finished with five kills and two service aces. Alix Krahn also had a pair of aces and two blocks. Leah Brezinski had three blocks. The Wesmen finish the three day tournament with a record of 1-3. The Wesmen will resume their Canada West regular season schedule January 15-16 in Saskatchewan against the Huskies.

WESMEN 64 Victoria 72
          
          VIKES DEFEAT WESMEN AT CALGARY INVITATIONAL
The Victoria Vikes defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 72-64 in the team's final game at the three day University of Calgary Invitational Tournament. Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with 15 points and seven rebounds. Amy Ogidan and Alex MacIver chipped in with 12 points each and Randie Gibson had 10, including three-three pointers. Winnipeg finishes the tournament with a 2-1 record. The Wesmen will resume their regular season schedule on the road starting next Friday against Fraser Valley and the following evening against Thompson Rivers.


Men's Volleyball @ UCLA (Exhibition)

UCLA def WESMEN 3-2 (30-25, 30-23, 29-31, 26-30, 16-14)

The Wesmen men's volleyball team lost a tough five set match (30-25, 30-23, 29-31, 26-30, 16-14) to the UCLA Bruins Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Justin Duff led the Wesmen with 18 kills. Matt Stubler was the leader in defensive digs with 10. The Wesmen will continue their California exhibition series on Saturday night against the defending NCAA Division one champions UC Irvine.

AWAY:
Men's Volleyball vs UC Irvine (Exhibition)

UC Irvine def WESMEN 3-1 (30-27, 30-27, 22-30, 30-25)

The Winnipeg Wesmen dropped a four set decision 3-1 (30-27, 30-27, 22-30, 30-25) to the  UC Irvine Anteaters Saturday night in Los Angeles, California.

The defending NCAA Div 1 champions won the first two sets by identical 30-27 scores before the Wesmen took the third set 30-22. The Anteaters regrouped and closed out the match in the fourth set by a score of 30-25.

"UC Irvine was a strong team to play against and we had to raise our level to compete with them.  We did just enough to win the 3rd set."

Fourth year middle Justin Duff led the Wesmen with 17 kills, six blocks and two service aces. Fourth year setter Dan Lother had ten defensive digs.

The Wesmen will have the bye this weekend as the Canada West regular season resumes. Winnipeg will next see action on Jan 15-16 against the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon.
