AWAY:

Manitoba def WESMEN 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-17, 25-20) 

Wesmen Leaders: Paul Kjos -10 kills, Andrew Town - three service aces, Justin Duff - six blocks

This was the third meeting of the pre season between Winnipeg and Manitoba.
At last week's Brandon Invitational Tournament, the Bisons defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-22). The two teams met last week at the Duckworth Centre with the Wesmen winning the match 3-1(25-18, 25-22, 25-27, 25-22).

The Wesmen team will head to Ontario next week for five matches in a five day span. Winnipeg will take on Toronto (Oct. 15) followed by two matches against Guelph (Oct. 16 &17) and conclude the trip with a two match series against McMaster (Oct. 18 & 19).

WESMEN OPEN BOB FM SHOOTOUT WITH DECISIVE WIN

The Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the 2008 BOB FM Shootout with a decisive 63-33 win over the Royal Military Paladins Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Winnipeg had three players scoring in double digits led by Amy Ogidan's game high 18 points. Fourth year forward Jessica Stromberg was solid at both ends of the court scoring 16 points and adding several defensive rebounds. Kaitlin Remple in her first CIS start scored 12 points for the Wesmen. Sharlene Harding led the Paladins with nine points.

Winnipeg led at halftime by a narrow score of 27-20 but exploded in the second half outscoring the Paladins 36-13 in the half.

The Wesmen (1-0) will face the Frase Valley Cascades (0-1) Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. RMC (0-1) will face the Brandon Bobcats in the late game at 8:00 p.m.

OGIDAN LEADS WESMEN TO WIN OVER CASCADES

Second year Wesmen guard Amy Ogidan scored a game high 24 points to lead the Winnipeg Wesmen to a 59-56 victory over the Fraser Valley Cascades Saturday night at the BOB FM Shootout at the Duckworth Centre.

Ogidan took control in the final quarter scoring 14 points, including a pair of clutch free throws with less than 20 seconds to play. Jessica Stromberg and MacKenzie Prasek also contributed to the win scoring nine points each.

Megan McAllister led Fraser Valley with 13 points and Heather Boer put in 11 points in the loss.

The Wesmen started the contest on a slow note trailing 12-4 after the opening ten minutes of play. The Cascades went into the locker room at halftime with a 26-21 lead. The Wesmen were able to gain the lead for the first time in the contest late in the third quarter after outscoring the Cascades 18-12 in the pivotal third quarter.

Winnipeg (2-0) will face their provincial rivals the Bradon Bobcats Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Fraser Valley will face Royal Military College in the early game at 11:00 a.m.

WESMEN BEAT BRANDON TO FINISH BOB FM SHOOTOUT UNDEFEATED

The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated their provincial rivals Brandon Bobcats 54-52 in the final game of the 2008 BOB FM Shootout. The victory gives the Wesmen a perfect 3-0 record in the three day tournament.

Tournament all-star Jessica Stromberg led the Wesmen with a game high 21 points, including three-three pointers. Fellow tournament all-star Randie Gibson finished the game with 10 points. Amy Ogidan, who was named the tournament MVP finished the game with eight points.

The Bobcats were led by the trio of Christie Anne McCullough, Melanie Thompson and Jennalee Burch, all three scored 10 points in the loss for Brandon. Jayla Bousquet, who was named a tournament all-star finished the game with five points.

The Bobcats came roaring out in front to start the game playing tough defence and keeping the Wesmen off balance. Brandon led the Wesmen 13-5 after the opening quarter. The Wesmen regrouped in the second quarter outscoring the Bobcats 18-13 to go into the halftime break trailing 26-23.

Winnipeg gained control of the game in the third quarter outscoring Brandon 18-8 in the quarter to take their first lead of the game by a score of 41-34 after three quarters of play.

Brandon made a charge in the fourth quarter outscoring Winnipeg 18-13 to make the game come down to the final seconds. After big baskets by Stromberg and MacKenzie Prasek gave Winnipeg a 54-52 lead, the Wesmen made a big defensive stand and held on for the win.
