COUGARS SWEEP WESMEN IN REGULAR SEASON OPENER

The visiting Regina Cougars defeated the hometown Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 29-27) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The Cougars were led by the duo of Tammy Jule and Beth Clark on this night. Jule a fifth year outside finished with a match high 17 kills and Clark, a fourth year middle finished with 12 kills and a pair of blocks. Kelly Cowan led Regina with 14 defensive digs. Setter Tiffany Herman totalled 36 set assists in the match.

First year player Ariel Smith was a bright spot for the Wesmen leading the team with 11 kills and 13 defensive digs. Brooklyn Brunel had two blocks and first year setter Amanda Bakker finished with 26 set assists.

Winnipeg started out on the right foot in the first set leading at both technical timeouts 8-6 and 16-15. The Cougars gained momentum, outscoring the Wesmen 10-4 down the stretch to win the first set 25-20.

In the second set Regina came out on fire racing out to an 8-1 lead at the first technical timeout. The Cougars showed Winnipeg no mercy extending their lead to 16-6 at the second break. The Cougars eventually won the second set in decisive fashion 25-11.

The teams came out battling in a close third set. Winnipeg found their legs and played much better as the Cougars held slim leads of 8-6 and 16-15 at the technical timeouts. The teams battled back and fourth with Winnipeg in position to win  with the score at 24-23 but Tammy Jule tied the score at 24-24 with a big kill. Winnipeg staved off three match points until the Cougars fought to a 29-27 third set win.

The Wesmen (0-1) and the Cougars (3-2) will close out their weekend series Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN def Regina 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21)

WESMEN OPEN UP REGULAR SEASON ON A WINNING NOTE

It was a tough match but a win is a win. The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated a stubborn Regina Cougar squad 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21) Friday night in the team's opening match of the 2008-09 regular season.

Alan Ahow, in his fifth year led Winnipeg with a team high 15 kills to pace the team to victory. Fourth year outside Andrew Town finished next with 12 kills and added a service ace. Paul Kjos contributed eight kills and a team leading 11 defensive digs. Middle blocker Justin Duff was solid finishing with four blocks.

Fourth year outside Matthew Brooks led Regina with a match high 18 kills. Fifth year outside Christopher Knoop was next with 13 kills and led the Cougars with 12 defensive digs. Setter Ryan DeCosse served up 48 set assists.

Winnipeg came out strong in the first set,  Andrew Town had three kills to give Winnipeg an early 4-3 lead. Regina scored five of the next six points to grab an 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout. Winnipeg rebounded, helped by back-to-back Justin Duff blocks to outscore the Cougars 11-5 to take the lead 16-13 at the second timeout. Duff made his presence felt once again at the end of the set scoring Winnipeg's final to points to give the Wesmen a 25-22 first set win.

The second set was once again a close affair with Winnipeg holding slim leads of 8-7 and 16-15 at the technical timeouts. The combination of Alan Ahow and Andrew Town were too much for the Cougars to handle down the stretch as each player came thru with timely kills to lead Winnipeg to a 25-22 set two win.

The Cougars never panicked and played a strong third set in which they had an attacking percentage of .407 compared to Winnipeg's .077. Regina got themselves back in the match with a 25-18 third set win to cut the Wesmen lead to 2-1.

Winnipeg showed their veteran leadership in the fourth set as Town and Ahow once again were strong in leading the Wesmen to a 25-21 fourth and final set win.

The Wesmen (1-0) will face the Regian Cougars (0-3) Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN 52  Regina 68

ROUGH SECOND QUARTER HURTS WESMEN IN LOSS TO REGINA

One bad quarter hurt the Wesmen on this night. A sluggish ssecond quarter in which Winnipeg was outscored 13-2 hurt the team in a 68-52 loss to the Regina Cougars Friday night in Regina.

Jessica Stromberg led Winnipeg with 14 points, including a pair of three pointers and eight rebounds. Amy Ogidan was next in the scoring department with 12 points.

Jessica Lynch led the Cougars with a game high 20 points, and also grabbed eight rebounds.

The teams were tied at 14-14 after the opening quarter but the Cougars took advantage of several Winnipeg missed shots to outscore Winnipeg 13-2 to take a 27-16 lead at halftime.

Winnipeg played better in the second half, shooting 42% from their field but the Cougars stood their ground outscoring the Wesmen 41-36 in the second half to claim the victory.

Winnipeg (2-1) will look to even the weekend series against Regina (1-0) as the two teams will meet Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. in Regina.

WESMEN 61  Regina 91

COUGARS BEAT WESMEN ON THE ROAD

The Regina Cougars opened up their regular season with a decisive 91-61 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Friday night in Regina.

Winnipeg seemed to have things go their way early on leading 19-14 after the opening quarter. The Cougars rebounded outscoring the Wesmen 23-7 in the second quarter to hold a 37-26 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter after the break, Regina started back up where they left off dominating the Wesmen all over the court outscoring Winnipeg 34-18 and holding a commanding 71-44 lead after three quarters.

Mike James led Winnipeg with 12 points, followed by Nick Lother's 11 points, including three-three pointers. Ryan Willerton and Jeff Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with five rebounds each.

Jeff Lukomski was the game's top scorere finishing with 25 points for the Cougars.

Winnipeg (1-2) and Regina (1-0) will conclude their two game series Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. in Regina.

WESMEN def Regina 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-11)

WESMEN WIN TOUGH FIVE SETTER OVER COUGARS

The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep with a dramatic 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-11) victory over the Regina Cougars Saturday night in front of 1100 spectators at the Duckworth Centre.

The victory comes off the heels of a 3-1 victory for the Wesmen in the series opener on Friday night.

Fourth year outside Andrew Town was impressive leading the Wesmen with a match high 21 kills. Third year middle Justin Duff appeared in only four games but made his presence felt with 11 kills and three blocks. Alan Ahow finished with a team high 19 defensive digs.

Fifth year outside Christopher Knoop led Regina with 15 kills and 19 defensive digs. Tyson Volk ended the match with 13 kills and three blocks.

Winnipeg played an impressive first set holding leads of 8-6 and 16-11 after the technical timeouts. Winnipeg went on to win the first set 25-17. Winnipeg finished the first set with a attacking percentage of .500.

The Cougars battled back in the second and third sets winning the sets by identical 25-19 scores. The Cougars took advantage of 11 Wesmen attacking errors in the two sets while dishing out 31 kills of their own. The Cougars held a 2-1 lead after three sets.

In the fourth set Regina held leads of 8-5 and 16-14 and were looking to close out the match. Winnipeg did not let up and fought to tie the score at 17-17 and 20-20 in the tail end of the set. Alan Ahow and Andrew Town came thru with key kills and a big block by Justin Duff enabled Winnipeg to win the fourth set 25-23 and force a fifth and deciding set.

Winnipeg gained the early advantage in set number five with a 8-7 lead at the technical timeout. Winnipeg, led by Andrew Town's three kills down the stretch won the fifth set 15-11.

Winnipeg (2-0) will hit the road next weekend for a pair of matches against the Saskatchewan Huskies (0-3). The Cougars (0-4) will have the bye next weekend.

Regina def WESMEN 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-21)

WESMEN SUFFER SECOND STRAIGHT LOSS TO COUGARS

The Winnipeg Wesmen suffered their second loss in as many nights to the visiting Regina Cougars. The Cougars recorded a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-21) victory over the Wesmen in front of 1100 spectators Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Regina defeated the Winnipeg in the series opener 3-0 on Friday night.

Four Regina Cougars starters recorded double digits in kills. Meagan Onstad and Beth Clark led the way with 12 kills each. Tammy Jule and Meghan Smith recorded 10 kills. Onstad and Jule each had a match high 17 defensive digs.

Marlee Bragg led Winnipeg with six kills. Bragg and Ariel Smith each recorded 11 defensive digs to lead in that category. Bragg also recorded two blocks.

In the first set Regina gained the upper hand racing out to leads of 8-3 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. The Cougars dominated after the second break outscoring Winnipeg 9-3 to take the first set 25-15.

The second set started out with both teams exchanging points and the Cougars holding a slim 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout. The Cougars found their game and outscored Winnipeg 8-3 to extend their lead to 16-8 at the second break. The Cougars would eventually go on to win the second set 25-18.

The Wesmen play improved in the third set. Winnipeg held the lead at 8-7 at the first technical timeout. Winnipeg continued to press and extended their lead to 13-8 when Regina called a timeout. The timeout seemed to work as Regina scored four straight points to cut the Wesmen lead to 13-12. The Wesmen were able to hold a 16-14 lead at the second technical. Winnipeg seemed to have things going their way, up 17-14 only to see the Cougars run off five straight points to take a 18-17 lead in the third set. Regina would outscore Winnipeg 7-4 to win the third and final set 25-21.

Winnipeg (0-2) will travel to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies (0-4) for a two match series beginning Friday night.

WESMEN 67  Regina 61

OGIDAN SCORES 21 TO LEAD WINNIPEG PAST REGINA

The Wesmen improved their record on the regular season to 3-1 with a 67-61 victory against the Regina Cougars Saturday night in Regina.

Second year guard Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with a game high 21 points. Jessica Stromberg continued her strong play finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds. Rebecca Schmidt led the Cougars with 16 points.

Winnipeg went into the halftime break holding a 34-27 lead.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-1 and in sole possession of first place in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference.

Winnipeg will be at home next week for two games. The Fraser Valley Casacades will visit on Friday night followed  by a visit by the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack on Saturday. Game time both nights is 6:00 p.m.

WESMEN 69  Regina 82

WESMEN PLAY BETTER IN LOSS TO REGINA

The Wesmen played better this evening but the result was the same as last night. Winnipeg suffered their second loss in a row to the hometown Cougars. Regina defeated Winnipeg 82-69 Saturday night in Regina.

Nick Lother was a force for Winnipeg finishing with a game high 27 points, including four-three pointers. Peter Lomuro and Mike James finished with 15 points. James and first year forward Christopher Jordan finished with six rebounds to lead the team.

Jeff Lukomski led Regina with 25 points, including seven-three pointers.

Regina held a slim 36-32 lead at halftime but exploded in the third quarter, outscoring Winnipeg 30-14 to hold a 66-44 lead after three quarters.

Winnipeg (1-3) will head home to prepare to host the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday night followed by the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack on Saturday. Game time both nights is 8:00 p.m.
