WESMEN 58 Lethbridge 40WESMEN DOWN PRONGHORNS IN REGULAR SEASON OPENER
The Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the 2008-09 Canada West regular season on a winning note. The Wesmen defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 58-40 in front of 1150 spectators Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Second year guard Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with a game high 14 points, 12 rebounds. Caity Gooch was a force at both ends of the court scoring 11 points, hauling in eight rebounds and four steals. Sam Hornquist led the Pronghorns with 12 points, including two-three pointers.
Winnipeg gained control of the game in the early stages of the opening quarter. The score was tied at 4-4 when Winnipeg exploded for nine straight points to gain a 13-4 lead with one minute to play in the opening quarter. Lethbridge responded with back-to-back baskets to cut the Wesmen lead to 13-8 after the opening quarter.
Amy Ogidan scored 10 points in the second quarter to help Winnipeg outscore Lethbridge 17-7 in the quarter and take a commanding 30-15 lead into the halftime break.
The Pronghorns made a charge in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 17-12 to cut the Winnipeg lead to 42-32 after three quarters.
Winnipeg played a sound fourth quarter scoring 16 points, including clutch three pointers from Catie Gooch and Randie Gibson and played agressive defence to hold Lethbridge to eight points in the quarter to seal the victory.
Winnipeg (1-0) will take on the Calgary Dinos (1-0) Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN 67 Lethbridge 81PRONGHORNS SURGE PAST WESMEN FOR OPENING NIGHT VICTORY
The Lethbridge Pronghorns surged past the Winnipeg Wesmen for a 81-67 regular season opening victory at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg Friday night.
The turning point of the game came late in the first half with the Wesmen holding on to a 16-10 lead but a late 10-0 run in the final minute of the quarter gave the Pronghorns the momentum and a 20-16 lead after the opening ten minutes.
Winnipeg seemend to have the life sucked out of them after the opening quarter with Lethbridge outscoring Winnipeg 25-13 to take contro of the game with a 45-29 lead at halftime.
Winnipeg was unable to get any closer than 11 points against the hot shooting Pronghorns, who connected on 49% of their shots from the field. Lethbridge led 68-49 after three quarters and were able to hold of the Wesmen in the final quarter to earn the victory in their first regular season victory of the 2008-09 season.
Danhue Lawrence scored a game high 27 points for Lethbridge, including 11-of-13 from the free throw line. Sephton Spence was next with 17 points.
Nick Lother was the top scorer for Winnipeg with 14 points and four assists. James Horaska and Mike James each scored 10 points.
Winnipeg will now face the Calgary Dinos Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN COMPLETE PERFECT WEEKEND WITH WIN OVER DINOSThe Winnipeg Wesmen completed a perfect regular season opening weekend with a 63-58 victory over the Calgary Dinos Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Winnipeg earned the victory with a total team effort with three players scoring in double digits. Caity Gooch and Amy Ogidan led the team with a game high 20 points each. Ogidan was also strong on the boards hauling in 13 rebounds. Jessica Stromberg continued her strong play early on in the season scoring 16 points and grabbing a game high 16 rebounds. Gooch led the Wesmen with seven assists, four steals and four-three pointers.Calgary was led by fifth year forward Courtney Coyle's team high 16 points, including a pair of three pointers. Whitney Haswell was next in Calgary scoring with 12 points and led the team with five assists. First year forward Alex Cole led the team in rebounds with 11.
Winnipeg fell behind early on in the first quarter (5-0) but rallied to score eight unanswered points to take a 8-5 lead. Winnipeg hung on in the closing moments of the opening quarter to take slim 16-15 lead after the opening quarter.
The trio of Gooch, Ogidan and Stromberg scored all of Winnipeg's 19 points in the second quarter to carry Winnipeg to a halftime lead of 35-33.
The turning point of the game was the third quarter that saw the Wesmen outscore Calgary 17-8 to extend their lead to 52-41 after three quarters.
Both team struggled in the early part of the fourth quarter with the first basket scored by Calgary three minutes into the quarter. Calgary chipped away at the Wesmen lead scoring seven straight points to cut the Winnipeg lead to 52-50. Jessica Stromberg scored Winnipeg's first points of the quarter with a three-pointer 5:43 into the final quarter. Calgary made a late charge but Winnipeg was able to sink their free throws to earn their second victory of the weekend.
Winnipeg (2-0) will hit the road next weekend to take on the tough Regina Cougars in a two game series Friday and Saturday.

WESMEN 82 Calgary 68TEAM EFFORT HELPS WESMEN BEAT DINOS
A total team effort was needed on this night and that is what Head Coach Dave Crook received from his team. The Wesmen played hard as a team in an impressive 82-68 victory over the Calgary Dinos Saturday night in fron of 1125 spectators at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night.
Three Wesmen starters scored in double figures led by third year guard Nick Lother who finished with a double-double (22 points, 11 rebounds). Third year forward Mike James played one of his best games as a Wesmen scoring 20 points and hauling in eight rebounds. Peter Lomuro also had a double-double in the game finishing with 17 points, 11 rebounds.
Fourth year forward Robbie Sihota scored a game high 24 points and hauled in 13 rebounds to lead Calgary. Henry Bekkering finished with 13 points followed by Ross Bekkering's 12 points.
After an even first quarter that ended with both teams tied at 16-16, the Wesmen outscored Calgary 20-14 to take a 36-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Winnipeg gained complete control in the third quarter outscoring Calgary 29-11 in the quarter to hold a commanding 65-41 lead after three quarters of play.
Calgary made a charge in the fourth quarter draining four-three pointers to cut into the Wesmen lead at 75-61 with just under four minutes to play. Three free-throws by Mike James and baskets by Christopher Jordan and Nick Lother held off the Dinos to preserve the win for the Wesmen.
Winnipeg (1-1) will head west to Regina to take on the Regina Cougars in a key divisional series in the early part of the regular season. The series starts on friday night and will conclude on Saturday night.
