Women's Basketball vs Fraser Valley
WESMEN 77 Fraser Valley 52HOT-SHOOTING WESMEN ROLL OVER CASCADES, IMPROVE TO 4-1
It was cold and snowy outside, but inside the Duckworth Centre the hometown Wesmen were red hot. The Wesmen drained 13 three pointers to propel them to a 77-52 victory over the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades friday night in Winnipeg.
Caity Gooch led Winnipeg with 16 points (four-three pointers), six assists and three steals. Randie Gibson scored 15 points (four-three pointers), MacKenzie Prasek stepped up and finished with 12 points and four steals, Alex MacIver completed the game with a double-double 10 points, 12 rebounds.
Megan McAlister was tops for Fraser Valley finishing the game with 16 points and four steals. Jennifer Dudley led the team in rebounding with nine boards.
The Cascades started the game on a positive note opening up a 20-11lead in the opening quarter but the Wesmen connected on three-three pointers in a row to tie the score at 20-20 after then minutes of play.
The Wesmen dominated the second quarter, going on a 16-5 run midway thru the quarter to take a 36-25 lead. Winnipeg would go on to outscore Fraser Valley 31-9 in the second quarter to hold a 51-29 lead at halftime.
The teams tightened up their defensive play in the third with only 15 points scored between the two teams. Winnipeg led after three quarters 58-37. The Wesmen went to their bench for most of the fourth quarter to close out the win.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 4-1. Fraser Valley drops below the .500 mark at 2-3. Winnipeg will face Thompson Rivers Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 6:00 p.m. and will be carried live on 1290 CFRW. Fraser Valley will pay a visit to the University of Manitoba to face the Bisons.

WESMEN 58 Fraser Valley 62CASCADES TAKE OVER FOURTH QUARTER TO DEFEAT WESMEN
It seemed like the Wesmen had the victory all wrapped up, but one quarter was the difference. The Fraser Valley Cascades overcame a 16 point deficit after three quarters to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 62-58 Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Cascades outscored the Wesmen 25-5 in the final quarter to register the victory.
Winnipeg dominated the opening half of play building an 40-26 lead at halftime. Winnipeg was an impressive 42% from the field in the opening half, including 4-of-5 from three point territory. The Cascades struggled only connecting on 32% of their shots from the field in the opening half.
Winnipeg controlled a tight third quarter outscoring the Cascades 13-11 and holding a 53-37 lead after three quarters.
Tristan Smith led the Cascades with 19 points, including a pair of thre pointers. Chris Laurie finished the game with a double-double 17 points, 13 rebounds.
Winnipeg was led by Nick Lother's 18 points, nine assists and two steals.First year forward Christopher Jordan also finished in double digits scoring a career high 10 points. Mike James led Winnipeg in rebounding with 10.
Winnipeg 1-4 will host Thompson Rivers (1-4) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Fraser Valley (4-1) will travel across town to take on the Manitoba Bisons (2-3).

WESMEN def Saskatchewan 3-2 (19-25, 15-25, 25-17, 25-18, 15-13)WESMEN OVERCOME DEFICIT FOR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
The Winnipeg Wesmen came back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat the Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 (19-25, 15-25, 25-17, 25-18, 15-13) for their first regular season win of the 2008-09 season Friday night in Saskatoon.
First year player Ariel Smith continued her impressive play leading the Wesmen with 11 kills. Marlee Bragg was strong with 10 kills, followed by Lauren Sears with nine kills. Brooklyn Brunel led Winnipeg with 14 defensive digs, including key digs in the pivotal fifth set. Brunel also had two blocks and a pair of service aces. Middle blocker Alix Krahn was strong at the net with three blocks and also had a strong match serving with two aces.
Winnipeg finished the match with nine service aces and eight blocks.
Winnipeg (1-2) will look for the sweep against the Huskies ( 0-5) Saturday night in Saskatoon. Match time is 6:00 p.m.
Men's Volleyball @ Saskatchewan
WESMEN def Saskatchewan 3-1 ( 21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20)WESMEN BEAT SASKATCHEWAN, IMPROVE TO 3-0
The Wesmen improved their record to a perfect 3-0 thus far in the 2008-09 regular season with a 3-1 ( 21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20) victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night in Saskatoon.
The duo of Andrew Town and Justin Duff led the Wesmen on this night. Town finished with a match high 16 kills and led the team with six defensive digs. Duff was outstanding finishing with 13 kills in 19 attempts (0.579 attack percentage) to go along with four blocks.
Winnipeg was strong at the net finishing the match with 17 total blocks.
Winnipeg will look to keep their winning streak alive in the wrap up to the series on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.

Women's Basketball vs Thompson Rivers
WESMEN 53 Thompson Rivers 44WESMEN PULL OUT VICTORY OVER WOLFPACK
It was not a pretty affair but a win is a win. The Winnipeg Wesmen pulled out a 53-44 decision over the visiting Thompson Rivers Wolfpack, Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The first quarter was a low scoring affair with the visiting Wolfpack holding a 11-10 lead after the opening quarter of play. Winnipeg played a better second quarter outscoring Thompson Rivers 17-11 to hold a 27-22 lead at halftime.
Winnipeg opened up their biggest lead of the night at 41-29 after three quarters of play. Winnipeg dominated the third quarter outscoring Thompson Rivers 14-7. The Wolfpack made a charge in the final quarter but the deficit was too much to overcome as the Wesmen stood their ground for the victory.
Alex MacIver led Winnipeg in scoring with 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds, for her second consecutive double-double. MacKenzie Prasek scored 11 points, including a pair of three pointers. Jessica Stromberg once agin led the Wesmen in rebounding with 13 to go along with 10 points.
Prasek made her first start of the season in place of Amy Ogidan who was injured in last night's game against Fraser Valley. Ogidan suffered a shoulder injury and will be out of action for approx three to five weeks.
Michelle Dimond led the Wolfpack with 12 points. Sarah Cameron led the team in rebounding with seven boards.
Winnipeg (5-1) will next see action on Thursday night at the University of Manitoba in the first game of a home and home series against the Manitoba Bisons. The action returns to the Duckworth Centre next Saturday for the basketball portion of the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge.

WESMEN 95 Thompson Rivers 99WESMEN FALL SHORT IN SLUGFEST WITH WOLFPACK
The Thompson Rivers Wolfpack defeated the host Winnipeg Wesmen 99-95 in a slugfest Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
Both teams shot the lights out on this evening. The Wolfpack finished the game with an impressive 56% shooting from the field, Winnipeg was equally impressive shooting 53% from the field.
The Wolfpack dominated the opening quarter building a 26-15 lead after the opening ten minutes of play. Winnipeg tightened up their defense in the second quarter outscoring the Wolfpack 21-20 to go into the halftime break trailing 46-36.
The third quarter was an even affair with both teams battling to get the momentum on their side but the teams matched each other basket for basket. Thompson Rivers led after three quarters 72-62.
In a wild fourth quarter that featured everything from several three pointers, technical fouls, slam dunks the Wolfpack held off the charging Wesmen down the stretch outscoring Winnipeg 33-27 in the final quarter of play.
Drew Bleth led the Wolfpack with 29 points, including five three pointers. Jeff Friesen was solid finishing with 28 points and a game leading nine rebounds.
Wesmen guard Nick Lother led all scorers with a game high 35 points, nine assists and two steals. Peter Lomuro was next with 22 points, including three-three pointers.
The victory improves the Wolfpacks record to 2-4, while the loss drops Winnipeg's record to 1-5. Winnipeg will have two big divisional games next week against the Manitoba Bisons starting Thursday night at the U of M and heading back to the Duckworth Centre next Saturday night for the basketball portion of the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge.

The Saskatchewan Huskies avenged last nights tough five set loss to defeat the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-17) Saturday night in Saskatoon.
Marlee Bragg led Winnipeg with 11 kills and two service aces. Middle blocker Lauren Sears contributed four blocks. Devyn DeGagne led the Wesmen with 12 defensive digs.
Winnipeg (1-3) will take on Trinity Western (1-3) for a pair of matches starting Friday night and concluding on Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia.

WESMEN def Saskatchewan 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21)WESMEN SWEEP HUSKIES, REMAIN UNBEATEN
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep against the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night in Saskatoon. The Wesmen defeated the Huskies 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21) and remain unbeaten in the regular season with a 4-0 record.
Fourth year outside Andrew Town led the Wesmen attack with a match high 24 kills. Justin Duff and Paul Kjos both had strong matches finishing with 12 kills. Kjos led Winnipeg with 13 defensive digs. Duff was a force in the middle with four blocks. Setter Emory Wells finished the match with an impressive 59 set assists.
The Wesmen (4-0) will continue on the road next week with a two match series against Trinity Western (3-1) in Langley British Columbia.
