WESMEN NO MATCH FOR PANDAS

The Winnipeg Wesmen started a two game road trip with a tough 92-47 loss to the University of Alberta Pandas Friday night in Edmonton.

The teams were competitive and even in a close first quarter. The Pandas opened up a slim 10-6 lead at the midway point of the quarter when soon after that both teams struggled as play continued without a point scored until close to three minutes later when Sarah Reilly scored a basket to cut the Panda lead to 10-8. Amy Ogidan drained a long three-pointer to give the Wesmen their only lead of the first half at 13-10. Alberta went on a 6-0 run in the final 1:20 to hold a 16-13 lead after the opening quarter.

Alberta took control in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 7-2 1:30 into the quarter. Four of those points came from Katie Barrett who sank four three throws, after a foul and a technical foul was handed out to Coach Tanya McKay. The Pandas continued to carry the play and build a 33-19 lead at the midway point of the quarter. Frustration set in for Wesmen coach McKay as she was served with her second technical foul and had to leave the game. The Pandas went into the halftime break leading 44-25.

The Pandas continued their strong defensive play in the third quarter keeping Winnipeg’s shooters off balance. Alberta outscored the Wesmen 18-10 to open up a substantial lead of 62-35 after three quarters.

Both teams went deep into their bench in the final quarter but the Pandas showed no signs in letting up outscoring the Wesmen 30-12 in the final quarter.

Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 14 points, 13 of those points coming in the first half. Ogidan and Alex MacIver each had two blocks. MacIver led the team in rebounds with seven boards.

Katie Barrett and Ashley Wigg led the Pandas with 13 points. Wigg led the team with a game high 10 rebounds.

The victory improves the Pandas record to 6-3. The loss drops the Wesmen’s record to 6-3. Winnipeg will travel to Saskatoon Saturday morning and play the Saskatchewan Huskies later that evening. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.

ALBERTA HOLDS OFF WESMEN FOR VICTORY

The Alberta Golden Bears held off a determined Winnipeg Wesmen squad to post a 94-83 victory Friday night in Edmonton.

The Wesmen fell behind on several occasions but managed to battle back and stay within striking distance.

The Golden Bears made a statement early on scoring seven straight points before the game was two minutes old. The Wesmen did not panic and settled down going on a 10-4 run in a span of four minutes to cut the Alberta lead to 11-10. The teams exchanged baskets and battled to a tie score of 19-19. Peter Lomuro drained a three-pointer with 33 seconds left in the quarter to give the Wesmen a 22-21 lead after the opening quarter of play.

Alberta made a charge in the second quarter outscoring the Wesmen 23-18, eight of those points coming from the free throw line to take a 44-40 lead into the halftime break. Nick Lother led all scorers in the opening half with 16 points, including three-three pointers. Peter Lomuro chipped in 12 points and hauled in six rebounds. Winnipeg connected on 41% of their shots from the field in the opening half.

The teams came out firing on all cylinders to start the third quarter. Both teams scored 10 points before the quarter was four minutes old to make the score 54-50 in Alberta’s favor. Alberta went on a 16-6 run in a span of four minutes to open up their largest lead of the game by a score of 70-56. Winnipeg recovered scoring eight of the next ten points, including back-to-back three pointers by Peter Lomuro to cut the Golden Bears lead to 72-64 after three quarters.

The Golden Bears did what they had to do in the final quarter scoring when they had to and holding off the Wesmen attack. Alberta went on to outscore the Wesmen 22-19 in the final quarter to capture the win.

Both teams had a decent night shooting in the contest. Alberta connected on 52% from the field and the Wesmen were not far behind shooting 48% from the field.

Nick Lother finished with a team high 24 points. Peter Lomuro was next with 23 points and a team leading eight rebounds. Lother and Lomuro each had four-three pointers.

Justin Vanloo led Alberta with a game high 26 points and hauled down eight rebounds. Neb Aleksic was next with 22 points.

The victory improves Alberta’s record to 4-5. Winnipeg drops to 2-7 thus far in the regular season standings. Winnipeg will travel to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN DEFEATED BY SFU IN FOUR SETS

The Winnipeg Wesmen dropped a crucial 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 17-25, 25-17) decision to the Simon Fraser University Clan Saturday afternoon in Burnaby, British Columbia.

The teams entered the contest with one win each and a win was crucial to get back into the playoff race in the Canada West Conference,

Winnipeg fell behind in the match 0-2, dropping the first two sets 25-20 and 25-19.

The Wesmen rallied in the third set winning the set 25-17. The Clan recovered and were able to close out the match winning the fourth set 25-17.

Ariel Smith and Lauren Sears led the Wesmen with 12 kills each. Tessa Peterson finished with 22 defensive digs. Amanda Bakker and Leah Brezinski each had four blocks.

The victory leaves Simon Fraser with a record of 2-9, Winnipeg falls to 1-8. The two teams will close out ther first half of the season with a match Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. (Wpg Time).

WESMEN SUFFER ANOTHER LOSS ON THE ROAD

Once again playing on the road was not kind to the Wesmen. The Wesmen suffered their second consecutive road loss in as many nights as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies led from start to finish defeating the Wesmen 89-59 Saturday night in Saskatoon.

Winnipeg suffered a 92-47 loss to the Alberta Pandas Friday night in Edmonton.

The Huskies started the first quarter on an 8-1 run with the game barely four minutes old. The Wesmen were unable to mount any sort of offence and had a hard time on the defensive side of the ball against the hot shooting Huskies. Winnipeg trailed 22-9 after the opening quarter.

The hot shooting Huskies showed no mercy in the second quarter. The Huskies started the quarter outscoring the Wesmen 19-5 in a five minute span to open up a 41-14 lead. Saskatchewan went into the halftime break with a 50-24 lead. The Huskies connected on 20-of-34 (59%) of their shots from the field in the opening half. Winnipeg could only connect on eight-of-31 (26%) from the field.

The Wesmen came out of the halftime break a different team. Winnipeg settled down on both sides of the ball and managed to cut into the Huskies lead outscoring Saskatchewan 21-16 in the quarter. The Huskies still held a comfortable 66-45 lead after three quarters.

The Huskies started the fourth quarter with a 21 point lead and it enabled both teams to give their starters a break and turn to their bench to finish out the game. 

Lindsey Copeland led the Huskies with a game high 17 points. Kim Tulloch added 15 points including a pair of three-pointers. Jana Spindler had a game high eight rebounds.

Alex MacIver led the Wesmen with 14 points and seven rebounds. Amy Ogidan finished with 12 points.

The Huskies finished the game connecting on 50% shooting from the field. Winnipeg finished the contest at 30%. Saskatchewan out-rebounded the Wesmen by a margin of 46-36. The Huskies were 11-of-22 from three point territory, Winnipeg struggled from beyond the arc going 3-of-23.

The victory improves Saskatchewan’s record to 8-2. The Wesmen record stands at 6-4 after their second consecutive road loss. The Wesmen will head into the Canada West holiday break and will resume their regular season schedule on January fourth against the Manitoba Bisons. The team will depart on Monday for a week long trip to England. The team will play two games against Division one teams on the trip.

STRONG SECOND HALF LIFTS HUSKIES OVER WESMEN

The Saskatchewan Huskies used a strong second half to lift them to a 91-71 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday night in Saskatoon.

The Huskies outscored the Wesmen 48-24 in the second half after trailing 47-43 at halftime.

The Wesmen looking to avenge last night’s loss to Alberta had their game faces on early on in the contest. Winnipeg roared out to an 11-2 lead with the game barely three minutes old. The Huskies went on an 8-2 run to get back into the contest trailing 13-10 midway thru the quarter. In the final four minutes of the quarter three pointers by Christopher Jordan and Eric Zimmerman and a three point play by Nick Lother helped propel Winnipeg to a 28-22 lead after the opening 10 minutes.

Eric Zimmerman scored in the teams opening possession of the second quarter to give the Wesmen their biggest lead of the half leading 30-22. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the quarter that saw the Huskies outscore the Wesmen 21-19. Winnipeg led 47-43 at the halftime break. Winnipeg was impressive from the field connecting on 16-of-33 (48%) of their shots in the half. Nick Lother led the way scoring 16 points in the opening half.

The Huskies started the third quarter on fire going out on a 12-2 run in the opening three minutes to take their first lead of the game by a score of 55-49.  Saskatchewan would keep the pressure on outscoring the Wesmen 31-12 in the quarter to hold a 74-59 lead after three quarters.

Forward Nolan Brudehl finished with a double-double 27 points and 13 rebounds.
Guard Showron Glover was next in Huskie’s scoring with 24 points, including three-     three-pointers.

Third year guard Nick Lother led the Wesmen with 20 points. Peter Lomuro finished with 16 points, five assists and six rebounds.

The victory gives the Huskies a record of 4-6, the loss drops Winnipeg’s record to 2-8 at the holiday break in the Canada West Conference regular season standings. The Wesmen will next see action at the 42nd Annual Wesmen Classic from Dec 28-30 at the Duckworth Centre.

CLAN SWEEP WESMEN

The Winnipeg Wesmen were swept 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-19) by the Simon Fraser University Clan Sunday afternoon in Burnaby British, Columbia.

The Wesmen dropped the series opener Saturday afternoon 3-1.

Leah Brezinski led the Wesmen with seven kills and five blocks. Alix Krahn had a strong match with 11 defensive digs and four blocks. Setter Amanda Bakker finished with 25 set assists.

The victory gives the Clan a record of 3-9. The Wesmen head into the holiday break with a record of 1-9. Winnipeg will next see action on January 8, 2009 when the visit the Brandon Bobcats.
