Thompson Rivers def WESMEN 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-17)WOLFPACK BEAT WESMEN IN THREE
The Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack snapped a six-match winless streak Friday night, beating the hometown Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-17) at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Wolfpack started the match on a strong note leading by margins of 8-3 and 16-7 at the technical timeouts. Thompson Rivers maintained a nine point advantage at 20-11 before winning the opening set 25-15.
The second set started out just as the first with the Wolfpack gaining the early advantage leading 8-6 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. Thompson Rivers went on a 9-6 run to close out the set by a score of 25-18.
Thompson Rivers once again was able to control play in the early stage of set number three. The Wolfpack stormed out to an 8-2 lead at the first technical timeout. The deficit was too much to overcome for the Wesmen as Thompson Rivers led at the second technical 16-9. After the timeout the Wesmen went on a 5-2 run to close the gap to 18-14 and were instantly back in the set. The Wolfpack regrouped scoring seven of the last ten points to take the final set 25-17.
Daniela Bercelli led the Wolfpack with a match high 12 kills. Libero Laura Plouffe finished with a match high 18 defensive digs. Michelle Domo had three blocks for Thompson Rivers.
The Wesmen were led by Ariel Smith’s team high 11 kills, 11 defensive digs and three service aces. Marlee Bragg finished the match with nine kills.
The victory improves the Wolfpack’s record to 2-7. The loss leaves the Wesmen with a record of 1-6.
The two teams close out their regular season weekend series on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN def Thompson Rivers 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11)WESMEN BEAT WOLFPACK IN FIVE TOUGH SETS
The Winnipeg Wesmen dug deep and pulled out a tough 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 15-11) victory over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack Friday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Wolfpack had the early advantage in the opening set holding slim leads of 8-6 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts. The teams exchanged points and eventually ended up tied at 22-22, a kill by Gord Perrin gave the Wolfpack a 23-22 lead but back-to-back kills by Andrew Town and a set winning kill by Alan Ahow gave the Wesmen a 25-23 opening set win.
The Wesmen carried the play in set number two holding leads of 8-7 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen held a lead of 21-20 when the Wolfpack answered back scoring three straight points to take the lead at 23-21. The Wolfpack would go on to win the second set 25-22.
In set number three the Wolfpack carried the momentum and were able to lead at both technical timeouts by scores of 8-7 and 16-14. After the timeout Thompson Rivers would go on to outscore the Wesmen 9-8 to win the third set 25-22.
The Wesmen came out strong in the fourth set holding a slim 8-7 lead at the first timeout and extending their lead to 16-12 at the second technical. Winnipeg continued to put the pressure on the Wolfpack and eventually went on to force a fifth and deciding set with a 25-20 win in set four.
Thompson Rivers gained the early advantage in the final set holding an 8-6 lead at the changeover. After the break the Wesmen dominated outscoring the Wolfpack 9-3 to win the fifth and final set 15-11.
Andrew Town led the Wesmen with 23 kills. Paul Kjos added 17 kills and 13 defensive digs. Alan Ahow had a strong match contributing 14 kills and 13 digs to the win. Justin Duff led the team with four blocks. Libero Chad Rempel led the team with a match high 16 digs.
Gord Perrin led the Wolfpack with a match high 24 kills. Robin Schoebel had 18 kills, 14 defensive digs and four blocks.
The win improves Winnipeg’s record to 5-2. The Wolfpack fall below the .500 mark with a record of 3-4.
The two teams will battle in Saturday’s early match at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 6:00 p.m.

The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack with a dramatic 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 31-29) victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen defeated the Wolfpack 3-2 in a hard fought match Friday night.The Wolfpack gained the early advantage in the first set leading 8-4 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. Thompson Rivers maintained their three point advantage at 22-19, when a kill by Alan Ahow and a service ace by Marc Ross trimmed the Wolfpack lead to 22-21. The teams exchanged points until the Wolfpacks’s Robin Schoebel put away the set winning point. Thompson Rivers won the opening set 25-23.
Set number two started just as close as the first with Thompson Rivers holding a slim 8-7 lead at the first technical. The teams exchanged points with the Wolfpack holding a 10-9, when the Wesmen rebounded scoring four unanswered points to take a 13-10 lead. The Wesmen extended their lead to 16-12 at the second break. Strong play down the stretch by Justin Duff and Paul Kjos helped Winnipeg to win the second set 25-20.
The Wesmen carried the momentum into the third set holding an 8-6 lead at the first technical and once again leading at the second break 16-12. A combination of three Wolfpack attacking errors and kills by the Wesmen front helped the Wesmen close out the set on a 9-4 run. Winnipeg won the third set by a score of 25-16.
The fourth and final set was a classic. Thompson Rivers led 8-7 at the first technical before the Wesmen stormed back to take the lead at 16-15 at the second break. The teams exchanged points and the Wolfpack were within a point of winning the set on four occasions but the Wesmen fought back and won the thrilling fourth set 31-29.
Andrew Town paced Winnipeg with a match high 20 kills. Paul Kjos had a strong match finishing with 15 kills. Alan Ahow had 13 kills to go along with 13 defensive digs. Middle blockers Maurice Williams and Justin Duff each had four blocks.
The Wolfpack were led by Gord Perrin’s 15 kills. Josh Boruck was next with eight kills. Colin Gordon led the team with 11 defensive digs. Conor Eatch and Martin Korsbak led the Wolfpack in blocks with four.
The victory improves Winnipeg’s record to 6-2. The loss drops Thompson Rivers to 3-5.
Winnipeg will head into the break and will not see action until January 8, 2009 when the travel to Brandon to take on the Bobcats.

The Thompson Rivers Wolfpack held off a determined Winnipeg Wesmen team to pull out a 3-2 (25-16, 25-16, 21-25, 15-25, 15-9) victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.
The Wesmen rallied from a 0-2 deficit to force a fifth and deciding set but fell just short of completing the comeback.
Thompson Rivers cruised along in the first set running out to leads of 8-2 and 16-9 at the technical timeouts. The Wolfpack reeled off three straight points to extend their lead to 19-9 before the Wesmen rallied with a 4-0 run to close the gap to 19-13. The Wolfpack were able to regroup to win the first set 25-16.
The second set was a carbon copy of the first set with the Wolfpack leading at both timeouts by scores of 8-3 and 16-9. Thompson Rivers would go on to win the second set 25-16 and hold a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set things started out on the right foot for the Wolfpack holding leads of 8-6 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts. After the second break Winnipeg went on a 6-1 run to take the lead at 19-17. After both teams exchanged points to the score of 22-20 in Winnipeg’s favor, the Wesmen were able to score the final three points to win the third set 25-21.
With momentum on their side the Wesmen simply dominated the fourth set racing out to a lead of 8-1 at the first technical timeout and extending their lead to 16-2 at the second break of the fourth set. The Wolfpack made a brief charge but the Wesmen led by Marlee Bragg’s seven kills in the set forced a fifth and deciding set with a decisive 25-15 win in set four.
In the fifth set the Wolfpack jumped out to an 8-5 lead at the timeout. The Wesmen were able to take their first lead of the set reeling off four straight points to hold a 9-8 lead. After the score was tied at 9-9, Thompson Rivers went on a 6-0 run to win the fifth set 15-9.
The Wolfpack were led by Anna Dyakiewicz’s 17 kills. Laura Plouffe had a strong defensive match finishing with a match high 28 digs. Lykke Degner was the top blocker with three blocks.
Marlee Bragg led the Wesmen with a match high 20 kills. Ariel Smith finished with 12 kills and a team leading 18 defensive digs. Lauren Sears was the top blocker with five blocks.
The victory improves the Wolfpack’s record to 3-7 on the season. The Wesmen fall to 1-7. Winnipeg will close out the first half the season with a visit to Simon Fraser next Saturday and Sunday for two matches.
