BISONS DOWN WESMEN, REMATCH SATURDAY AT DUCKWORTH

The University of Manitoba Bisons used home court to their advantage. In front of a loud, boisterous crowd the Bisons defeated the Wesmen 66-58 Thursday night at the University of Manitoba.

Winnipeg playing without the injured Amy Ogidan dug themselves into an early hole falling behind 7-0 four minutes into the opening quarter. The Wesmen did not score their first points until the 4:24 mark of the first period thanks to a two-point shot by Sarah Reilly. Manitoba controlled the opening quarter opening up a 19-8 lead.

Winnipeg started the second quarter scoring five straight points in the opening minute, including a three point play by Jessica Stromberg. Manitoba took control of the game for a span of six minutes outscoring the Wesmen  13-4 to build up a 34-17 lead with just over two minutes to play in the quarter.  A three pointer by Catie Gooch silenced the Bisons and their crowd for a brief moment before a trio of baskets by Manitoba in the final minute helped Manitoba hold a 38-24 lead at halftime.

Winnipeg connected on 31% of their shots from the field in the opening half. Manitoba was successful on 38% from the field.  

Winnipeg opened up the third quarter on a 7-2 run in the first four minutes to cut the Bison lead to single digits at 40-31. A three pointer by MacKenzie Prasek cut the Manitoba lead to 42-34, but the Bisons reeled off ten straight points to open up a 52-34, and their biggest lead of the game with under four minutes to play in the quarter. Manitoba continued to hold a double digit lead after three quarters 58-44.

Winnipeg made a charge in the opening 3:15 of the fourth quarter outscoring Manitoba 7-2 to cut the lead to 60-51. The Bisons held their ground down the stretch to pull out the victory.

Caity Gooch led Winnipeg with a game high 16 points. Jessica Stromberg finished with a double-double 13 points and 11 rebounds. Alex MacIver contributed 10 points.

Kaitlyn Flett and Jenna Ralston scored 13 points each to lead the Bisons.

The loss drops Winnipeg’s record to 5-2. The victory improves Manitoba’s record to 5-2 and in a tie for first place with Winnipeg in the Great Plains Division . The two teams will meet in the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge, Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 6:00 p.m.

BISONS USE LONG BALL TO DEFEAT WESMEN

The Manitoba Bisons used the three point shot to propel them to an 90-78 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen Thursday night at the University of Manitoba.

The Bison's drained 16 three-pointers, including 11 in the first half which was the difference in the contest.

Manitoba scored a three on their opening possession before Winnipeg reeled off six straight points to take a 6-3 lead 3:30 into the contest. The Bisons went on a 12-0 run in a span of 2:45 to take a 15-6 lead at the midway point of the quarter. Each team scored a pair of three pointers in the final four minutes of an explosive first quarter. Manitoba held a 29-18 advantage after the opening quarter.

In the second quarter Manitoba drained seven three pointers to help them pull out to a 52-37 lead with 1:40 left in the quarter. The Wesmen did not give up running off 10 straight points in the final 1:30 to close the Bison lead to 52-47 at halftime.

Winnipeg continued to chip away at the Bison lead in the third quarter. Peter Lomuro drained a three pointer to cut the Bison lead to their smallest of the game at 56-54. After a Bison free throw, the Wesmen scored four points to take a 58-57 lead and their first lead of the game since early in the first quarter. The Bisons outscored Winnipeg 7-1 in the final three  minutes to take a 64-59 lead into the fourth quarter.

Winnipeg did get to within three points (71-68) with 4:40 left, but back to back three pointers by Chris Pereira and Nathan Dixon extended the Manitoba lead to 77-68. After Nick Lother and Mike James fouled out Manitoba was able to hold off the Wesmen for the win on their home court.

Nick Lother led Winnipeg with 18 points. Mike James and Peter Lomuro finished with 17 points each. James was Winnipeg's top rebounder with seven boards.

Nathan Dixon led Manitoba with a game high 20 points, including five-three pointers. Eric Garcia scored 17, with four-threes. Myron Dean led Manitoba in rebounds with eight.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 1-6. Manitoba improves to 3-4. The two teams will meet in the basketball portion of the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 8:00 p.m. and will be carried live on 1290 CFRW.

WESMEN FALL TO SPARTANS ON THE ROAD

In a match between two teams with equal records, Trinity Western was the better team on this night. The Spartans defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-17) Friday night in Langley, British Columbia.

Both teams entered the contest with identical 1-3 records in the Canada West regular season standings.

The Spartans battled their way to an 8-4 lead at the first technical of the opening set. The Wesmen matched the Spartans point-for-point and only trailed 16-13 at the second technical timeout. After the timeout Trinity Western went on a 9-2 run to close out the set, winning the opening frame 25-15.

Winnipeg came out on fire in the second set holding a lead of 8-5 at the first technical. The Spartans regrouped and went on a momentum turning 11-3 run to take a 16-11 lead at the second break. The Spartans went on to win the set 25-19.

In the third set Trinity Western held the upper hand leading 8-4 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg was kept off balance as the Spartans went on to win the third set 25-17.

“We played a decent match overall against a very tough team. We had runs of solid plays across the board, but still had too many runs of unforced errors. Lauren Sears was solid for us tonight”, added Head Coach Diane Scott.

Winnipeg Leaders: Kills – Lauren Sears (eight), Digs – Ariel Smith (11), Blocks – Marlee Bragg (three), Assists - Amanda Bakker (17).

The loss drops Winnipeg’s record to 1-4, Trinity Western with the victory improve to 2-3. The two teams will meet Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. (Wpg Time) in the final match of the weekend series.

SPARTANS SNAP WESMEN WINNING STREAK

The Winnipeg Wesmen are no longer undefeated. The Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-18) Friday night in Langley, British Columbia.

The Wesmen entered the match with a perfect 4-0 record in the early stages of the Canada West regular season.

Winnipeg started the match off on a high note running up leads of 8-3 and 16-6 at the technical timeouts in the opening set. The Wesmen continued their strong play for the remainder of the set and gained the early advantage in the match winning the opening set 25-16.

The Spartans evened up things in the second set. Trinity Western led 8-5 at the first technical timeout and doubled their lead to 16-10 at the second timeout. The Spartans would go on to even the match, winning the set 25-17.

Head Coach Larry McKay changed things up in the third set, inserting Dan Lother in the setter position in place of Emory Wells. The set started up with both teams matching each other point-for-point. The Spartans held slim leads of 8-7 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. A 9-5 run by the Spartans after the timeout gave the home team a 25-19 set win and the lead in the match.

The Spartans looked to close out the match in the fourth set. The Spartans led at both technical timeouts 8-6 and 16-12. Winnipeg made a charge late in the set closing the gap to three points on two occasions but was unable to get any closer. Trinity Western won the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.

Winnipeg Leaders: Kills – Andrew Town, Justin Duff (11)  Digs – Alan Ahow (nine),      Blocks -  Justin Duff (three)  Assists – Emory Wells, Dan Lother (16).

The loss drops Winnipeg’s record to 4-1, tied with the Spartans who improve to 4-1 with the victory. The two teams will meet up Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. to close out the two match set.

WESMEN SURGE AHEAD IN SECOND HALF TO DEFEAT BISONS

A strong second half was the difference on this night for the Winnipeg Wesmen. The Wesmen came back from a nine point deficit at halftime to defeat the Manitoba Bisons 67-61 Saturday night in the basketball portion of the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge.

Manitoba led at halftime 35-26 but the Wesmen outscored the Bisons 41-26 in the second half, which proved to be the difference.

Winnipeg pulled out to an early lead of 5-2 thanks to a three-pointer by Jessica Stromberg. The Bisons caught fire soon after that scoring 12 straight points to take the lead at 14-5 with under three minutes to play in the opening quarter. Manitoba led 16-10 after the first quarter.

Manitoba stepped up their game in the early part of the second quarter, opening up a double-digit for a better part of the quarter. Catie Gooch scored five points in the final stages of the quarter to cut the Manitoba lead to 35-26 at halftime.

Two minutes into the third quarter Manitoba kept the pressure on the Wesmen opening up a lead of 43-31. The Wesmen comeback started with a 12-0 run in a span of 4:25 to tie the score at 43-43 with 3:32 left to play. The teams exchanged baskets and Winnipeg took their first lead since early in the first quarter on a three point play by Chantale Garand with 46 seconds left in the third quarter, the Bisons scored a two-pointer in the final seconds to tie the score at 50-50 after three quarters.

Winnipeg held off the Bisons in the fourth quarter outscoring Manitoba 17-11 to preserve the victory on their home court.

Caity Gooch led Winnipeg with 23 points, including five-three pointers, 10 rebounds and four assists. Alex MacIver had her best game of her Wesmen career scoring 20 points and hauling down 10 rebounds.

Tessa Klassen led Manitoba with 23 points. Kaitlyn Flett added 10 points in the loss.

Caity Gooch (Winnipeg) and Tessa Klassen (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of the Game.

The Wesmen will head into a bye week with a record of 6-2 and in first place in the Great Plains Division. Manitoba falls to 5-3 on the season. Winnipeg will next see action on Nov 28 and 29 with visits to Alberta and Saskatchewan.

WESMEN SNAP LOSING STREAK WITH VICTORY OVER MANITOBA

The losing streak is over. The Wesmen snapped an ugly five game skid with an impressive 73-64 victory Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre in the baskletball portion of the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge.

The Wesmen relied on clutch shooting and strong defensive play in the victory.

The Bisons took an early lead in the contest holding a 19-13 lead after a close opening quarter. Chris Pereira of the Bisons was on fire in the opening quarter draining three-three pointers.

The Wesmen clawed back in the second quarter going on a 6-0 run early on to tie the score at 19-19. Manitoba recovered going on a 7-2 run to regain their lead at 26-21. A four point play by Nick Lother sparked a Winnipeg 13-8 run in the final five minutes of the second quarter to tie the score at 34-34 at halftime.

The third quarter was an even affair with both teams matching each other basket-for-basket until the Wesmen reeled off six straight points to take a 48-40 lead with over two minutes to play. Winnipeg led after three quarters 50-47.

Winnipeg stepped up their defensive play in the fourth quarter and guard Nick Lother scored 10 points in the quarter to lead Winnipeg to their second victory of the regular season.

Nick Lother led Winnipeg with a game high 28 points, including a pair of three-pointers. Peter Lomuro finished with 18 points and three steals. Jeff Shynkaryk led Winnipeg in rebounding with 12.

Nathan Dixon led the way for Manitoba scoring 21 points. C.J. Wicker added 15 points. Myron Dean led the Bisons with 14 rebounds.

Nick Lother (Winnipeg) and C.J. Wicker (Manitoba) were named the Duckworth Challenge Players of thre Game.

Winnipeg improves to 2-6 on the regular season, Manitoba drops to 3-5 in the tight Great Plains Division. Winnipeg will have the bye next weekend and will return to action on the road on Nov 28-29 in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

The Trinity Western University Spartans recorded their second straight sweep over the Winnipeg Wesmen. The Spartans defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-16) Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia.

Winnipeg Leaders: Kills - Marlee Bragg (eight), Digs - Devyn DeGagne (12), Blocks - Lauren Sears (three), Service Aces - Christie Nairn (two).

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 1-5. The Spartans improve to 3-3. Winnipeg will host Thompson Rivers for a wekend series on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

The Spartans improve to 5-1 in the regular season standings. Winnipeg now 4-2 will host Thompson Rivers on Friday and Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
