WESMEN STRUGGLE IN SECOND HALF, LOSE TO COUGARS

A rough second half did the Wesmen in on this night. The Regina Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 72-50 at the Duckworth Centre Friday night in Winnipeg.

The Cougars outscored a struggling Wesmen team 47-23 in the sdcond half. Winnipeg went ice cold shooting in the half connecting on only 22% of their shots from the field. Regina turned up their game a notch shooting 50% in the half after shooting a paltry 24% in the first half.

Winnipeg, playing without injured guard Catie Gooch led at halftime 27-25 in a tight defensive battle early on.

The Wesmen kept the pressure on the Cougars until Regina broke the game wide open going on a 17-0 run to take a 47-31 lead with one minute left in the third quarter. Winnipeg scored a late basket in the quarter but trailed 48-33 after three quarters.

The Wesmen made a charge early in the fourth quarter on back-to-back three pointers by Jessica Stromberg cut the Cougar lead to 50-39. The Cougars held on to their double digit lead outscoring the Wesmen 22-11 down the stretch.

Second year forward Gabrielle Gheyssen led Regina with a game high 20 points, including three-for-three from three point land. Megan Cherkas finished with 18 points, including five-three pointers. Chelsea Cassano hauled down a game high 12 rebounds. The Cougars were 10-of-18 from three point range.

The Wesmen were led by second year post Alex MacIver's 11 points. Jessica Stromberg had nine points, finishing three-of-four from behind the arc. Stromberg also had 11 rebounds. Winnipeg finished six-of-19 from the three point area.

The victory improves Regina's record to 11-6 to remain in first place in the Great Plains Division. Winnipeg drops below .500 to 8-9 and remain in second place in the division.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN 67  Regina 79

QUICK START LIFTS COUGARS TO WIN OVER WESMEN

The Regina Cougars got off to a quick start and never looked back as they defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 79-67 in a key Great Plains Division game at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night.

Regina raced out to a 21-12 lead after the opening quarter. The Wesmen got back into the game with back-to-back three pointers by Erfan Nasajpour cut the Cougar lead to 32-25 with just over three minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Wesmen would not get any closer in the half with the Cougars leading 39-29 at halftime.

The Wesmen struggled in the second half with several giveaways and numerous missed easy baskets led to Regina outscoring Winnipeg 17-13 to expand their lead to 56-42 after three quarters.

Regina held their ground in the fourth quarter, not letting the Wesmen get any closer than twelve points to earn the victory on this night.

The Cougars had five players scoring in double digits. Jeff Lukomski led Regina with 15 points, followed by Bryden Wright and Kris Heshka, each scoring 14 points. Adam Huffman was next with 13 and Jamal Williams finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Winnipeg had three players in double digits led by Dan Shynkaryk's 15 points. Shynkaryk also hauled in a team high eight rebounds. Erfan Nasajpour scored 12 points to go along with six assists. Peter Lomuro finished with 11 points.

The victory lifts Regina into sole possession of second place in the Great Plains Division with a 9-8 record. Winnipeg drops to third place with a record of 8-9.

The two teams will meet on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. The game will once again be carried live on 1290 CFRW with the pre game show starting at 7:15 p.m.

Regina def WESMEN  3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-17)

WESMEN FALL IN THREE TO COUGARS

The Regina Cougars played a solid match in defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-17) Friday night in Regina.

After dropping the first set 25-17, Winnipeg had a great chance to even the match leading 20-16 late in the second set before Regina scored five unanswered points to win the second set 25-20. The Cougars won the third set 25-17 to complete the match.

Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with seven kills, followed by Marlee Bragg's six kills. Karen Montgomery and Shanti Plett each had a match high nine defensive digs.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 4-13 while the Cougars improve to 7-10.

The two teams will conclude their weekend series Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.

Men's Volleyball @ Regina

WESMEN def Regina 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-18)

WESMEN WINNING WAYS CONTINUE AGAINST REGINA

The second ranked Winnipeg Wesmen continued their winning ways with a convincing 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-18) victory over the Regina Cougars Friday night in Regina.

Winnipeg dominated the match from start to finish defwating the Cougars in just over one hour of playing time.

Alan Ahow led the Wesmen with a match high 13 kills and an impressive attack percentage of .750. Andrew Town finished with eight kills. Ben Schellenberg totalled seven kills and was in on five blocks.

The victory improves the team's record to 11-2 and tied with Alberta for second place in the Canada West Conference standings. Regina falls to 1-14 on the season.

The two teams will meet up on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. in Regina.

WESMEN SECOND HALF STRUGGLES CONTINUE IN LOSS TO COUGARS

For the second consecutive night the Winnipeg Wesmen were unable to hold onto a halftime lead. The Regina Cougars came back from a seven point halftime deficit to defeat the Wesmen 65-55 in front of 1007 spectators at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night.

Winnipeg went into the halftime break with a 30-23 lead. In Friday's match the Wesmen also held the halftime lead by a score of 27-25.

The first quarter started out as an even affair with the Cougars holding a slim lead of 9-8 with just over three minutes to go in the quarter. The Cougars finished the quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 17-10 lead after one quarter.

The Wesmen opened up the second quarter on a 14-2 run to grab a 24-19 lead midway thru the quarter and kept the pressure on the Cougars to take a 30-23 lead at halftime.

Randie Gibson drained back-to-back three pointers at the start of the second half to increase the Winnipeg lead to double digits at 36-24. The wheels started to fall off for the Wesmen with Regina going on a 19-6 run to close out the quarter leading 43-42.

Regina kept the pressure on the Wesmen in the fourth quarter, outscoring Winnipeg 22-13.

Rebecca Schmidt led the Cougars with 15 points, including two-three pointers. Jessica Lynch followed with 14 points.

The Wesmen were led by Randie Gibson's game high 17 points, including a trio of three pointers and four assists. Dawn Wright scored 11 points and hauled in seven rebounds.

The victory improves Regina's record to 12-6. Winnipeg falls to 8-10 and into a tie for second place with the Manitoba Bisons in the Great Plains Division.

NASAJPOUR LEADS THE WAY IN VICTORY OVER REGINA

The leader of the Winnipeg Wesmen led his team on this night. Fifth year guard Erfan Nasajpour scored a game high 31 points to lead the Wesmen to an impressive 79-54 win over the Regina Cougars in front of 2000 spectators at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night.

Nasajpour was on his game all night connecting on nine-of-18 from the field and draining an amazing seven-three pointers in the contest. Nasajpour was also a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line and added seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

The Wesmen, led by Nasajpour's 13 points in the first quarter raced out to a blistering 25-9 lead after the opening quarter.

Regina did make a charge in the second quarter scoring eight straight points to cut the Wesmen lead to 34-23 with just over one minute to play in the quarter. Matt Opalko helped Winnipeg expand their lead once again with two-three point plays to help Winnipeg take a 42-23 lead at halftime. Winnipeg finished the first half shooting 54% from the field.

Winnipeg opened up the second half with three pointers by Nasajpour and Michael Passley to expand their lead to 48-25. The Cougars seemed to regroup going on a 13-0 run to cut the Wesmen lead to 48-38 with just over three minutes to play in the third quarter. The Wesmen were able to hang on to 52-44 lead after three quarters.

The captain and "heart and soul" of the Wesmen led the charge in the fourth quarter. Winnipeg outscored Regina 27-10, led by Nasajpours four-three pointers in the quarter.

Fellow fifth year player Matt Opalko finished with 19 points. Peter Lomuro led the Wesmen under the glass hauling in a team high eight rebounds.

Jamal Williams led Regina with 11 points. Adam Huffman and Paul Schubach followed with nine points each.

The victory brings Winnipeg back to the .500 level with a 9-9 record and once again tied with the Cougars for second place in the Great Plains Division standings.

WESMEN def Regina 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-21)

WESMEN COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP

The second ranked Winnipeg Wesmen completed a weekend sweep against the Regina Cougars with their second consecutive sweep. Winnipeg defeated Regina 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-21) in Regina Saturday night.

Alan Ahow led Winnipeg with a match high nine kills. Paul Kjos finished the match with eight kills.

Head Coach Larry McKay was able to give palying time to his entire 12 man roster in the match.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 12-2. Regina falls to a miserable 1-15 on the season.

WESMEN PLAY BETTER, LOSE IN FOUR IN REGINA

The Winnipeg Wesmen came out with a better effort but the results were the same. The Wesmen were defeated 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-14, 25-18) by the Regina Cougars Saturday night in Regina.

"We came out better and battled hard, we tried everything", said Head Coach Diane Scott.

Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with 11 kills. Lauren Sears had 10 kills and four blocks. Libero Shanti Plett finished with a match high 17 defensive digs.

The loss drops Winnipeg to 4-14 and the Cougars improve to 8-10 in the Canada West Conference standings.
