Men's Volleyball @ Thompson Rivers
WESMEN def Thompson Rivers 3-1 (25-16, 15-25, 26-24, 25-20)The Wesmen Men's Volleyball team started the second half of their regular season schedule with a 3-1 (25-16, 15-25, 26-24, 25-20) victory against the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack Wednesday night in Kamloops, British Columbia.
The win improves Winnipeg's record to 7-2 and places the team in sole possession of third place in the tough Canada West Conference standings. Thompson Rivers fall to 6-3 on the season.
Fifth year outside Ben Schellenberg led Winnipeg with 19 kills, followed by middle Justin Duff, who collected 11 kills and five blocks. Andrew Town was next with seven kills in the match.
The two teams will meet again this evening at 9:00 p.m. (Wpg Time). Winnipeg will then participate in the Thompson Rivers Invitational Tournament with matches against Pepperdine University on Friday, followed by Laval and Trinity Western on Saturday.

WESMEN OPEN SECOND HALF WITH LOSS TO MANITOBA
The Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the second half of the Canada West regular season with a 54-48 loss to the Manitoba Bisons Thursday night in front of 1200 spectators at the Duckworth Centre.
Melanie Schlichter led the Bions with a game high 11 points. Tessa Klassen followed with 10 points, including two-three pointers and eight rebounds.
Randie Gibson and Dawna Wright led Winnipeg with nine points a piece. Gibson connected on 3-of-5 from three point territory. Wright hauled in a game high 12 rebounds.
The game was a struggle for both teams early on in the contest. Manitoba did not hit the scoreboard until the seven minute mark of the first period. Winnipeg struggled hitting on 17% of their shots in the first period. Manitoba led 8-6 after one period of play.
Both teams once again struggled in the second period until Tessa Klassen hit back-to-back three pointers to give Manitoba a 14-10 lead at the three minute mark of the period. Winnipeg's Randie Gibson hit a three pointer with 35 seconds left to tie the score at 18-18. A manitoba free throw gave the Bisons a 19-18 lead at halftime.
Manitoba gained control in the third quarter running off 11 straight points in the first four and a half minutes to open up a 30-18 lead. Winnipeg went on a 12-9 run in the last five minutes to close the gap to 39-32 in Manitoba's favour after three quarters.
After Kaitlyn Flett opened up the fourth period with a three pointer, Winnipeg found their shooting touch scoring eight straight points to pull to within two points at 42-40 with just under seven minutes to play. Midway thru the final frame the Bisons went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 51-40. Back-to-back three pointers by Gibson and two free throws by Jessica Stromberg brought Winnipeg to within three points at 51-48 with just under a minute to play. Manitoba would run the Wesmen out of time and secure the victory.
The victory improves Manitoba's record to 5-6, while the Wesmen fall to 4-7. The two team will meet on Saturday night at the University of Manitoba. Game time is 6:15 p.m.

WESMEN 84 Manitoba 71
STRONG FOURTH PERIOD LIFTS WESMEN TO VICTORY OVER MANITOBA
A strong final period lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to an impressive 84-71 victory over the Manitoba Bisons in front of 1400 spectators at the Duckworth Centre Thursday night.
Winnipeg outscored Manitoba 37-18 in the final period to come back from a six point defecit to earn the victory.
Winnipeg started the game in impressive fashion opening up a 20-12 lead after the opening period. Erfan Nasajpour scored 14 of his game high 29 points in the opening frame to set the pace for the Wesmen.
The Wesmen held the lead on the hard charging Bisons for almost the entire second period until Graeme Mitchell of Manitoba came up with a steal and a basket at the buzzer to give Manitoba a 35-34 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
Manitoba gained control of the game in the third period outscoring Winnipeg 18-13, taking advantage of four Wesmen turnovers and several missed shots to take a 53-47 lead after three periods.
Nasajpour opened up the fourth period with back-to-back three pointers to tie the score at 53-53. Chris Pereira drained back-to-back three pointers of his own to give Manitoba a 59-53 lead. Fifth year Matt Opalko scored two baskets to once again bring the teams even at 59-59 with just over six minutes to play. Winnipeg gained control of the game going on a 9-2 run highlighted by a Peter Lomuro steal and thundering slam dunk to give Winnipeg a 68-61 lead with over three minutes to play. Winnipeg held off Manitoba down the stretch sinking their free throws to secure the victory on home court.
Nasajpour finished with 29 points, including four-three pointers, eight rebounds, and four assists. Dan Shynkaryk had a double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Matt Opalko also finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Isaac Ansah led Manitoba with 28 points, including 10-of-12 from the free throw line, four assists and two steals. Christopher Pereira collected 13 points, including three-three pointers. Brian Crowe had a team high 11 rebounds in the contest.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 5-6, while the Bisons fall to 1-10 on the season. The two teams will meet on Saturday night at the University of Manitoba. Game time is 8:15 p.m.

WESMEN COMPLETE SWEEP AGAINST WOLFPACK
The Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 25-15) Thursday night in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Ben Schellenberg once again led Winnipeg on this night finishing with 14 kills, nine digs and five blocks. Alan Ahow had a strong match with 11 kills and three blocks. Third year middle Ryan DeBruyn had an all round great match collecting seven kills, three service aces and four blocks. Fifth year setter Dustin Addison-Schneider finished with 44 set assists and seven digs.
Winnipeg as a team finished the match with 19 blocks and eight service aces.
The victory completes a two match sweep for the visiting Wesmen over the Wolfpack. Winnipeg improves to 8-2 on the season while Thompson Rivers falls to 6-4 on the season.
Winnipeg will now have three exhibition matches as part of the Thompson Rivers Invitational Tournament. Winnipeg will play Pepperdine University on Friday night, followed by matches against Laval and Trinity Western on Saturday.

WESMEN DEFEAT HIGHLY NCAA RANKED PEPPERDINE
The Winnipeg Wesmen showed why they are one of the teams to beat this season. The defending CIS champions defeated Pepperdine University 3-1 (22-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-20) at the Thompson Rivers Invitational late Friday night in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Pepperdine, from California are currently ranked number two in the NCAA rankings.
Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen charge with 11 kills, followed by Paul Kjos with nine kills.
Winnipeg takes on Laval Saturday afternoon and Trinity Western on Saturday night to wrap up the tournament.

WOLFPACK DOWN WESMEN IN FIVE SET MARATHON
The Winnipeg Wesmen began the second half of the regular season with a 3-2 (23-25, 28-26, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13) loss tgo the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack Friday night in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with a match high 26 kills. Dirks, the team captain also had nine defensive digs and three blocks. Marlee Bragg finished with 14 kills and eight defensive digs. Dayna Kiesman had a strong match in the middle position finishing with five blocks.
All five sets in this close match were determined by three points or less, Winnipeg winning the first set (25-23) and the fourth set (25-22). The Wolfpack gained the upper hand in the match winning the second set (28-26), the third set (25-22) and the fifth and deciding set (15-13).
The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 2-9 on the regular season. The two teams will meet Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. (Wpg Time) in the weekend series finale.

WESMEN UNDEFEATED AT THOMPSON RIVERS INVITATIONAL
The Winnipeg Wesmen remained undefeated at the Thompson Rivers Invitational after defeating Laval 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 14-25, 25-22) Saturday afternoon in Kamloops, British Columbia.
The Wesmen were victorious in the two league games against the Wolfpack on Wednesday and Thursday and followed that up with a victory over Pepeerdine last night.
Ben Schellenberg led Winnipeg with 12 kills and 11 digs. Alan Ahow was next with 11 kills. Second year middle Justin Duff had a strong match with four blocks. Fifth year setter Dustin Addison-Schneider finished with 44 set assists.
Winnipeg will conclude the tournament this evening against Trinity Western. Match time is 7:00 p.m.

WESMEN REBOUND TO DEFEAT BISONS
A total team effort lifted the Winnipeg Wesmen to an impressive 71-52 victory over the Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at the University of Manitoba.
The Wesmen were able to rebound from a 54-48 loss to the Bisons on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre and play an all round solid game at both ends of the court.
Three Wesmen players scored in double digits led by first year guard Dawna Wright’s 18 points. Jessica Stromberg had her best game of the season finishing with a double-double 13 points and 10 rebounds. Third year guard Randie Gibson contributed 10 points, including three-three pointers. Gibson was also the play maker dishing out a game high seven assists.Winnipeg played an aggressive style of defence that kept Manitoba off balance for a majority of the contest. The Wesmen held Manitoba to a paltry 16 points in the first half, limiting Manitoba to connect on six-of-38 (16%) from the field. Winnipeg went into the halftime break with a comfortable 31-16 lead.
The Wesmen continued their aggressive defence in the second half and scored key baskets at the right times, outscoring Manitoba 40-36 in the second half.
The victory improves Winnipeg’s record to 5-7, tied with Manitoba for second place in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference.

SPARTANS DEFEAT WESMEN, WINNIPEG WINS TOURNAMENT
The Trinity Western University Spartans defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 20-25, 36-34) in the final match of the Thompson Rivers Invitational Tournament Saturday night in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Despite the loss Winnipeg was crowned the tournament champions with a record of 3-1 in the three day tournament.
Fifth year outside Ben Schellenberg was named the tournament MVP and setter Dustin Addison-Schneider was named a tournament all-star.

Thompson Rivers def WESMEN 3-2 (25-13, 11-25, 16-25, 25-16, 15-13)
WESMEN SUFFER SECOND LOSS TO WOLFPACK
The Winnipeg Wesmen put in a better effort but were defeated 3-2 (25-13, 11-25, 16-25, 25-16, 15-13) for the second consecutive night by the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack Saturday night in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Winnipeg held a 2-1 sets lead heading into the fourth set but the Wolfpack stormed back to win the set 25-16 and finished off the match in the fifth set winning by a score of 15-13.
Nicola Dirks, Winnipeg's best player in the two matches finished with 14 kills and 13 digs. Marlee Bragg and first year middle Lauren Sears finished with 13 kills each. Setter Jayme Menzies dished out 39 assists and served up two service aces.
Winnipeg drops to 2-10 in the Canada West Conference standings.
Men's Basketball @ ManitobaWESMEN 80 Manitoba 73
The Winnipeg Wesmen completed a two game sweep against the Manitoba Bisons with an 80-73 victory over the host Bisons Saturday night at the University of Manitoba.
Head Coach Dave Crook’s starting unit combined for 76 points in a solid outing for the group.
Fifth year guard Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with a game high 27 points. Three other Wesmen players scored in double digits. Matt Opalko was next with 19 points, including 15 points in the second half. Opalko was also the game’s top rebounder hauling in 10 rebounds. Dan Shynkaryk followed up Thursday’s solid game with another great game scoring 16 points and contributed in the paint with eight rebounds. Nick Lother had his best game as of late scoring 13 points, including three-three pointers.
Manitoba gained control of the game early on scoring five points in the games first minute. Manitoba extended their lead to 11-4 before two baskets by Erfan Nasajpour and one by Nick Lother gave Winnipeg their first lead at 12-11 five minutes into the game. Manitoba rallied down the stretch to take a 23-16 lead after the opening quarter.
Winnipeg settled down in the second quarter outscoring the Bisons 19-13 cutting the Manitoba lead to 36-35 at halftime.
The second half opened up with both teams fighting tooth and nail for every basket. Winnipeg outscored Manitoba 22-21 in the quarter to make the score tied at 57-57 after three quarters of play.
Manitoba and Winnipeg continued their battle in the fourth quarter as both teams matched one another basket for basket. Manitoba opened up a lead until three straight Nasajpour baskets pulled Winnipeg to within a point at 69-68 with six minutes left in regulation time.
Winnipeg closed the game going on a 8-2 run in the final two minutes to secure the victory.
The win completes a two game sweep for the Wesmen over the Bisons and improves the teams record to 6-6. Manitoba falls to 1-11 on the regular season.
