Women's Volleyball vs Saskatchewan

WESMEN def Saskatchewan  3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-13)

WESMEN SWEEP HUSKIES, END LOSING STREAK

The Winnipeg Wesmen ended a miserable six match winless streak with a convincing 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-13) victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen started the match on a great note taking an 8-3 lead at the first technical timeout and then outscoring the Huskies 8-4 to take a commanding 16-7 lead at the second break. Winnipeg continued their domination led by Nicola Dirks and Lauren Sears to win the first set 25-11. Winnipeg had an impressive attack percentage of .667 in the first set.

The second set was more of the same with Winnipeg holding commanding leads of 8-3 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. The Huskies were unable to make any sort of comeback as the Wesmen held their ground taking the second set 25-14.

The third set started out even with both teams battling to a score of 4-4. The Wesmen broke the third set wide open running off eleven consecutive points to take a commanding 15-4 lead, before the second technical timeout. Fifth year standout Nicola Dirks pounded home four kills down the stretch to help Winnipeg win the third and final set 25-13.

Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with a match high 17 kills and finished with an attack percentage of .607. Middle blockers Dayna Kiesman and Lauren Sears were solid in the middle finishing with nine and eight kills respectively. Kiesman and Sears also finished with a pair of blocks each. Libero Shanti Plett finished with a match high 14 defensive digs.

Ashley Schurko led the Huskies with seven kills, followed by Shannon Usher who finished with six kills.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 3-12, while the Huskies fall to 3-10 on the season.

The two teams will meet Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre to wrap up the weekend series.


Men's Volleyball vs Saskatchewan

WESMEN def Saskatchewan  3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20)

WESMEN ROLL OVER HUSKIES

The number two ranked Winnipeg Wesmen rolled over the visiting Saskatchewan Huskies 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20) at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg on Friday night.

The Wesmen playing their first home match since the end of November, got off to a great start in the first set building leads of 8-5 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg continued their impressive play going on a 9-5 run to win the first set 25-15. Winnipeg finished the first set with an attack percentage of .765.

Winnipeg continued their domination in the second set with leads of 8-5 and 16-9 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen went on a 9-4 run to win the second set 25-13 and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. Head Coach Larry McKay gave some of his starters a rest in the second set including setter Dustin Addison - Schneider and Ben Schellenberg, who was used sparingly in the set.

In the third set Winnipeg raced out to a commanding 8-2 lead at the first technical timeout and continued to lead at 16-11 at the second timeout. The Huskies did come to within of three points of the Wesmen (16-13), but Winnipeg prevailed down the stretch to win the tjhird set 25-20.

Fourth year opposite, Paul Kjos led the Wesmen with 10 kills. Andrew Town followed with seven kills and two blocks. Ben Schellenberg had five kills, three service aces and two blocks in limited playing time. Second year middle Justin Duff had three blocks for the Wesmen.

Jarret Christenson led the Huskies with a match high 12 kills. Geoffrey Zerr followed with six kills and Daniel Quintal contributed five kills in the match for Saskatchewan.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 9-2, while the Huskies fall to 1-12 on the season in the Canada West Conference standings.

The two teams will meet Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

Women's Basketball @ Fraser Valley

WESMEN 60  Fraser Valley  56

WESMEN DOWN CASCADES IN BRITISH COLUMBIA

The Winnipeg Wesmen pulled out a 60-56 victory over the Fraser Valley University Cascades Friday night in Abbotsford, BC.

The Wesmen and Cascades were tied at 28-28 at halftime before Winnipeg outscored Fraser Valley 33-28 in the second half, including 21-16 in the pivotal fourth quarter.

First year guard Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with a game high 16 points and hauled down seven assists. Randie Gibson was next finishing with 14 points, including a pair of three pointers. Alex MacIver had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Wesmen.

Fraser Valley was led by Megan McAllister with 11 points and Samantha Hill who hauled in a game high 12 rebounds for the Cascades.

Winnipeg improves to 7-8, while the Cascades fall below the .500 mark to 7-8 as well.

Winnipeg will take on Thompson Rivers Saturday night in Kamloops, BC. Game time is 7:00 p.m. (Wpg Time). 

Men's Basketball @ Fraser Valley

WESMEN 86  Fraser Valley 90  (2 OT)

WESMEN EDGED IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

The Winnipeg Wesmen dropped a 90-86 decision in double overtime to the Fraser Valley Cascades Friday night in Abbotsford, BC.

The two teams were tied at 71-71 after regulation time. Kyle Graves of the Cascades forced overtime scoring a two pointer as time expired in regulation time.

The game was even after the first overtime at 80-80 and another quarter was necessary to declare a winner.

Fraser Valley outscored Winnipeg 10-6 in the second overtime and clinched the win with a pair of free throws with four seconds left on the clock.

Erfan Nasajpour played a total of 46 minutes scoring 28 points, grabbing nine rebounds and was stellar on defence with six steals. Matt Opalko scored 19 points, including two three pointers. Dan Shynkaryk scored 13 points and added seven rebounds and four steals.

The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 7-8, tied with Regina for second place in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference.

The Wesmen will travel to Kamloops this evening and play tomorrow night against Thompson Rivers. Game time is 9:00 p.m. (Wpg Time).

Men's Volleyball vs Saskatchewan

WESMEN def Saskatchewan 3-1 (28-26, 28-26, 22-25, 25-23)

WESMEN FIGHT OFF HUSKIES FOR TENTH WIN

The Winnipeg Wesmen earned their tenth win of the regular season against a stubborn Saskatchewean Huskies squad. The Wesmen pulled out a 3-1 (28-26, 28-26, 22-25, 25-23) victory at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night.

Saskatchewan gave the Wesmen all they could handle in a hard fought first set. The Huskies playing more inspired than in yesterday's match held leads of 8-7 and 16-15 at the technical timeouts. The teams battled exchanging point for point until Winnipeg opened up a two point lead at 22-20. The Huskies fought back and staved off two match points before Winnipeg prevailed winning the first set 28-26.

In set number two, the Huskies once again put the pressure on the Wesmen leading 8-5 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg trailed for a majority of the set and managed to take their first lead since leading 1-0, scoring three straight points to take a 23-22 lead. Winnipeg had a chance to close out the set leading 24-23, but a service error evened up the set at 24-24. Andrew Town pounded home two kills down the stretch to give Winnipeg the second set 28-26 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

For the third consecutive set Saskatchewan jumped out to a 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout and expanded their lead to 16-10 at the second break. Winnipeg did make a late charge closiong the gap to 23-21 late in the set but the Huskies prevailed winning the third set 25-22.

The Huskies carried their momentum into the fourth set leading 8-7 at the first break. The Huskies had a lead of 13-11 before the Wesmen reeled off four straight points to take a 15-13 lead just before the second technical break. Winnipeg showed their preserverance and held off the Huskies to win the fourth set 25-23.

Alan Ahow led the Wesmen with a match high 19 kills. Andrew Town was next with 18 kills and 10 defensive digs. Ben Schellenberg was all over the court finishing with 14 killa and seven blocks. Fifth year setter Dustin Addison-Schneider accumulated 55 set assists to go with a team high 12 defensive digs.

The Huskies were led by Jarret Christenson's 18 kills and four blocks. Daniel Quintal finished with 12 kills and Brian Yuzdepski had 10 kills and a match high 13 digs.

The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 10-2 and the huskies fall to 1-13 in the Canada West Conference standings.

WESMEN SWEEP HUSKIES....AGAIN

The Winnipeg Wesmen earned their second consecutive win with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16) sweep over the Saskatchewan Huskies at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night.

The Huskies did come out of the gate stronger than last night holding an 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. Winnipeg was able to regroup going a 9-3 run to hold a 16-11 lead at the second technical timeout. Winnipeg had the first set win in their sights leading 24-20 before the Huskies reeled off a apair of points to close the gap to 24-22 before a big kill by Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg to a 25-22 first set win.

The Wesmen got their game back in the second set holding leads of 8-7 and 16-11 at the technical breaks. Winnipeg went on a 9-5 run, led by Marlee Bragg's three kills down the stretch to win the second set 25-16.

Winnipeg smelled blood in the third set surging to leads of 8-2 at the first technical timeout and expanding their lead to 16-6 at the second technical break. Winnipeg never let the Huskies get back into the set and were able to win the third and final set 25-16.

The "dynamic duo" of Nicola Dirks and Marlee Bragg led the Wesmen charge. Dirks led with 12 kills, 12 defensive digs and three blocks. Bragg finished with 11 kills and 10 defensive digs. Middle Dayna Kiesman continued her strong play finishing with five blocks.

Shannon Usher led Saskatchewan with a match high 14 kills and 13 defensive digs.

Winnipeg earns their second consecutive victory and improves their record to 4-12. Saskatchewan's record falls to 3-11 in the regular season standings.

Women's Basketball @ Thompson Rivers

WESMEN 77  Thompson Rivers 53

WESMEN PICK UP IMPRESSIVE ROAD WIN

The Winnipeg Wesmen made it two wins in a row in British Columbia. The Wesmen defeated Thompson Rivers 77-53 Saturday night in Kamloops, BC.

Winnipeg jumped out to a quick 19-9 lead after the first quarter and were able to keep the pressure on the Wolfpack taking a 35-25 lead into the halftime break.

The third quarter was the turning point of the game as the Wesmen outscored the Wolfpack 21-9 in the quarter to expand their lead to 56-34 after three quarters of play.

First year guard Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 19 points. Dawna Wright followed with 14 points and added three steals. Randie Gibson scored 12 points, incluiding three-three pointers.

The Wesmen even their record to 8-8 and currently hold down second place in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference. The Wesmen are four points ahead of the 6-10 Manitoba Bisons. Thompson Rivers falls to 1-17 on the season.


Men's Basketball @ Thompson Rivers

WESMEN 99  Thompson Rivers 88

WESMEN BEAT WOLFPACK, EARN SPLIT ON THE ROAD

The Wesmen earned a split on their two game BC road trip defeating the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack 99-88 Saturday night in Kamloops, BC.

Winnipeg jumped out to an early lead holding a 35-25 lead at halftime. The Wolfpack outscored the Wesmen 19-16 in the second quarter but Winnipeg still went into halftime with a 51-44 lead.

The Wesmen led by as much as 17 points in the second half and never looked back to earn the victory over the Wolfpack.

Dan Shynkaryk led Winnipeg with a team high 26 points. Second year guard Nick Lother scored 21 points, including four-three pointers and eight assists. Matt Opalko continued his solid play as of late scoring 18 points. Michael Passley led the Wesmen in rebounding with 11 boards.

The victory brings Winnipeg back to the .500 mark with a record of 8-8.
