Women's Volleyball vs Alberta
Alberta def WESMEN 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-15)
WESMEN SWEPT BY DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSThe defending CIS champions the Alberta Pandas swept the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-15) in a rare afternoon match at the Duckworth Centre on Friday.
Fourth year outside Jocelyn Blair led the Pandas with a match high 12 kills. Setter Daryll Roper finished the match with 30 set assists and two service aces. Fifth year Libero Christie Biggs had 11 defensive digs to lead the Pandas in that category.
Winnipeg was led by first year middle Lauren Sears who finished with a team high 11 kills and two blocks. Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks had 10 kills and 11 defensive digs. Karen Montgomery led Winnipeg with a match high 12 defensive digs.
Winnipeg started the match on the right foot racing out to an impressive 8-2 lead at the first technical timeout. Alberta seemed to settle down and after going on a 14-6 run were able to grab a 16-14 lead at the second technical timeout. The Pandas closed out he first set on a 9-3 run to win the first set 25-17. Alberts had an impressive attack percentage of .400 in the opening set.
The Wesmen were able to regroup somewhat in the second set making Alberta work for every point. The Pandas held the lead at both technical timeouts by scores of 8-6 and 16-14. Alberta was able to take advantage of four Wesmen errors down the stretch to win the second set 25-19.
Set number three started out as a close affair with Alberta holding on to leads of 8-5 and 16-11 at the two technical timeouts. After the second timeout Alberta went on a 5-0 run to take control of the set at 21-11. A service ace by Tiffany Proudfoot ended the third set in Alberta's favour 25-15.
The victory improves Alberta's record to 8-3 while the Wesmen fall to 2-11 in the Canada West Conference standings. The two teams will meet Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. to wrap up the weekend series.

PANDAS BEAT WESMEN IN DEFENSIVE BATTLE
The Alberta Pandas defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 64-51 in a defensive battle Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Fourth year guard Ashley Wigg led Alberta with a game high 17 points, eight assists and six steals.Carly McLennan was next with 14 points and Kristin Jarock finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Winnipeg had three players in double digits all scoring eleven points. Alex MacIver led the group finishing with 10 rebounds to go with her 11 points. Catie Gooch and Amy Ogidan were the other Wesmen players with eleven points.
The teams were deadlocked at 27-27 at halftime with both teams shooting in the 35-37% range from the field.
In the second half Alberta was able to outscore Winnipeg 37-24 and improve their shooting to 43% in the half. The Wesmen struggled at both ends of the floor in the second half connecting on only 7-of-31 (23%) from the field and turning the ball over nine times resulting in 16 Alberta points.
The victory improves the fith ranked Alberta to 10-3 and the loss drops Winnipeg to 5-8 and tied with Manitoba for second place in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference.
The Wesmen will host the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN 91 Alberta 95
WESMEN LOSE SHOOTOUT WITH ALBERTA
The fifth ranked Alberta Golden Bears defeated the host Winnipeg Wesmen 95-91 in a shootout at the Duckworth Centre on Friday night.
Fifth year guard Alex Steele led Alberta with 24 points and nine assists. Andrew Parker was next up with 22 points. Also scoring 22 points was 6'11" centre Richard Bates, who also grabbed a game high 15 rebounds.
Matt Opalko had his best game of the season leading Winnipeg with a game high 27 points, including five-of-seven three pointers. Erfan Nasajpour finished with a double-double 26 points and 11 assists. Dan Shynkaryk also had a double-douoble finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Alberta started the contest on fire racing out to a 16-6 lead midway thru the opening period. Winnipeg clawed their way back into game led by Nasajpour's 10 points down the stretch to give Winnipeg a 22-20 opening period lead. Nasajpour scored 14 points in the opening period.
Winnipeg took control of the game of the game in second quarter building a ten point lead at 40-30 with just under three minutes to play in the opening half. Nasajpour nailed a three pointer followed by a three point play by Alberta to give Winnipeg a 43-39 lead at halftime.
Alberta opened the opening three minutes of the third period on a 11-7 run to tie the score at 50-50. Winnipeg turned the ball over on a few occassions and Alberta was able to go opn a 10-6 run to take the lead at 60-56. Alberta managed to hold on to the lead and hold a 69-63 lead after three periods.
Winnipeg mounted a charge late in the fourth quarter but the Golden Bears were able to hold their ground and the victory.
The victory improves Alberta's record to 9-4, while the Wesmen drop below the .500 mark with a 6-7 record.
The Wesmen will host the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.

WESMEN GIVE PANDAS ALL THEY COULD HANDLE
The Wesmen gave the defending National Champions, the Alberta Pandas all they could handle on this night. Alberta defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16) in four tough sets at the Duckworth Centre Saturday night.
Jocelyn Blair led the Pandas with a match high 19 kills and 19 defensive digs. Tiffany Proudfoot finished with 12 kills in the match.
The Wesmen were led by Marlee Bragg with 14 kills. Nicola Dirks ended the match with 12 kills and 18 defensive digs. Middle Dayna Kiesman had a strong match with 12 kills and one block.
Winnipeg got off to a great start in the first set holding a 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout before Alberta got back into the lead at 16-13 at the second technical timeout. Alberta eventually would go on to win the first set 25-20.
In set number two Kiesman had four kills off the bat to lead Winnipeg to a 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout. Both teams battled to tie the score at 11-11, when the Pandas scored three straight points to grab their first lead of the set at 14-11. Winnipeg from that point reeled off five straight points to take a 16-14 lead at the second technical timeout. Winnipeg went on to even the match with a 25-22 set two win.
The Wesmen were able to carry the play for the first part of the third set holding a 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout. Alberta would race back in to the set and grab the lead at 16-14 at the second technical timeout. The Pandas would outscore Winnipeg 9-5 down the stretch to win the third set 25-19.
Alberta gained control in the fourth set racing out to a 6-1 lead and Winnipeg was never able to get back into the match. Alberta won the fourth and final set 25-16.
The win improves Alberta's record to 9-3, while the Wesmen drop to 2-12 in the Canada West Conference standings.
Women's Basketball vs SaskatchewanWESMEN 79 Saskatchewan 70 (Overtime)
WESMEN DOWN HUSKIES IN EXTRA TIME
It took extra time but the Winnipeg Wesmen got the job done. The Wesmen defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 79-70 in overtime Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Second year guard Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with a game high 22 points. Gooch also added six assists, six rebounds and three steals. Amy Ogidan had a strong game scoring 16 points and hauling in nine rebounds. Dawna Wright also scored in double digits finishing with 10 points and two blocks.
Lauren Whyte led the Huskies with 19 points, including five-three pointers. Alicia Wilson followed with 14 and Kara Lackie had 12 points and hauled down a team high seven rebounds.
Winnipeg outscored Saskatchewan 19-10 in a wild five minute overtime session. The teams were deadlocked at 60-60 after regulation time. Lauren Whyte of the Huskies forced overtime sinking a two pointer with 20 seconds left.
Saskatchewan had the early advantage in the contest holding a 21-16 lead after the opening quarter. The Wesmen started an all- rookie lineup to start the second quarter and the group played tough defence, while getting some scoring opportunities. Winnipeg went on to outscore the Huskies 15-10 in the quarter to tie the score at 31-31 at halftime.
The Wesmen started the third quarter on an 8-0 run in the first two minutes to build a 39-31 lead. Saskatchewan did not score until almost four minutes were played in the quarter. Winnipeg was able to build their lead to double-digits going on a 12-5 run in the final few minutes of the quarter to take a 51-38 lead. After two Huskie baskets Winnipeg led 51-42 after three quarters.
Winnipeg had control of the game in the fourth quarter until the final three minutes with the Huskies going on a 10-0 run to tie the score and force the extra frame.
The win improves Winnipeg's record to 6-8 and second place in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conferene. The Huskies fall to an even 7-7 on the season.
Men's Basketball vs SaskatchewanWESMEN 75 Saskatchewan 64
WESMEN REBOUND TO DEFEAT HUSKIES
The Winnipeg Wesmen rebounded from a tough loss Friday night to Alberta and played a solid game defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies 75-64 Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.
Fifth year guard Erfan Nasajpour led the way for Winnipeg scoring a game high 22 points, including three-three pointers, hauled in 10 rebounds and added four assists. Nick Lother had a solid game for the Wesmen finishing with 17 points. Matt Opalko also scored in double digits, adding 11 points. First year post Ben Kingdon hauled in 10 rebounds.
The Huskies were led by Andrew Spagrud's 18 points. He was followed by Troy Gottselig, who finished with a double-double 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Huskies held the early advantage in the contest holding a 19-13 lead after the iopening ten minutes of play.
The second quarter was the turning point in the game with the Wesmen outscoring the Huskies 25-11. Nasajpour scored 16 points in the quarter, including 14 straight points to put the Wesmen back ine game and give the team their first lead of the game. Winnipeg went into halftime with a 38-30 lead.
In the third quarter the Huskies got themselves back in the game outscoring Winnipeg 21-16 to cut the Wesmen lead to 54-51 after three quarters.
Winnipeg held their composure in the fourth quarter and were perfect from the free-throw line in the final minute to preserve the victory.
The victory improves evens Winnipeg's record to 7-7, tied for second place with Regina in the Great Plains Division of the Canada West Conference. Saskatchewan also sits with a 7-7 record.
