Women's Volleyball vs Brandon

nicWESMEN LOSE IN FIVE, PLAYOFF HOPES COME TO AN END

The Winnipeg Wesmen put in a great effort, but in the end they fell just short. The Wesmen saw their playoff hopes disappear with a 3-2 (18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 15-13) loss to the Brandon Bocats Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Winnipeg (4-15) needed to win two matches, this evening in Winnipeg and Saturday night in Brandon to grab the seventh and final playoff spot in the Canada West Conference. The Brandon Bobcats (7-12) qualified for the post season and will finish in the seventh position.

Crystal Cornish led Brandon with 20 kills. Teagan Hunter followed with 19 kills and 23 defensive digs. Ashley Creighton was in on five blocks to go along with 11 kills.

Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks led the Wesmen with a match high 27 kills. Dirks was honoured before the match as it was her last home game as a Wesmen. Lauren Sears finished with 10 kills and three blocks. Karen Montgomery had seven kills and a match high 24 defensive digs.

Crystal Cornish led Brandon with 20 kills. Teagan Hunter followed with 19 kills and 23 defensive digs. Ashley Creighton was in on five blocks to go along with 11 kills.

Winnipeg started the match on a great note winning the first set in impressive fashion by a score of 25-18 thanks to an attack percentage of .423 with no errors.

Brandon came back in set number two leading 8-7 and 16-15 at the technical timeouts and took advantage of 11 Wesmen attack errors to even the match with a 25-23 set two victory.

In set number three the Bobcats dominated early building an 8-5 lead at the first btechnical timeout and expanding their lead to 16-10 at the second break. Brandon would gain the upper hand in the match winning the third set 25-18.

The Wesmen showed fight in the fourth set racing out to a quick 8-3 lead at the first technical and continued their solid play in the set to hold a 16-10 lead at the second break. Nicola Dirks came thru with four big kills down the stretch to lead the Wesmen to a 25-19 set win and force a fifth and deciding set.

In the fifth set Winnipeg gained the early hand as Dirks had three early kills to carry Winnipeg to a 8-7 lead at the timeout. The Bobcats regrouped outscoring the Wesmen 8-5 to win the fifth set 15-13.

The victory improves Brandon's record to 7-12 and the Wesmen watch their record fall to 4-15. The two teams will wrap up their regular season schedules on Saturday night with a match in Brandon at 6:00 p.m.

dustinbenBOBCATS DEFEAT WESMEN IN FIVE TOUGH SETS

The number eight ranked Brandon Bobcats defeated the number two ranked Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (25-18, 22-25, 23-25, 29-27, 15-12) on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The loss by Winnipeg is their first in regular season play since early November when they were defeated by Alberta.

Paul Sanderson, a second year left side from Melbourne, Australia led Brandon with a match high 27 kills and five service aces. Kevin Miller was next with 17 kills. Middle blocker Joel Small had 11 kills and four blocks.

Fifth year opposite Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen with 18 kills, followed by Alan Ahow's 14 kills and 14 defensive digs. Fifth year setter Dustin Addison-Schneider had 58 assists, one service ace and was a force at the net with five blocks. Schellenberg and Addison-Schneider were honoured before the match as tonight marked their last regular season home game at the Duckworth Centre.

Winnipeg started the match on the right foot leading 8-6 at the first technical but Brandon gained momentum leading 16-14 at the second break. Two service aces by Paul Sanderson down the stretch led Brandon to a 25-18 first set win.

In the second set Winnipeg regrouped jumping out to leads of 8-5 and 16-13 at the timeouts. Winnipeg was able to hold Brandon off leading by three points down the stretch winning the second set 25-22. Winnipeg finished the second set with an attack percentage of .433.

The matches third set was close affir with both battling each other point for point. Winnipeg was able to gain the upper hand holding slim leads of 8-7 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg took the lead in the match winning the third set 25-23.

The fourth set was a dramatic affair with both teams not giving one inch to one another. Brandon led 8-7 at the first break before Winnipeg stormed back to take a 16-13 lead at the second break. Winnipeg had three match points but Brandon fought them all off and went on to win the fourth set 29-27.

Brandon gained the early momentum in set number five leading 8-3 at the timeout. Winnipeg made a late charge to close to within three points at 12-9 but Brandon went on to win the fifth set 15-12.

Brandon improves to 9-8 on the season while the Wesmen's record stands at 14-3. The two teams will wrap up the regular season on Saturday night in Brandon. Match time is 8:00 p.m.

WESMEN 76  Brandon 81

BOBCATS STUN WESMEN FOR FIRST WIN

The Brandon Bobcats stunned the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen 81-76 for their first regular season win in over three years at the Brandon University Gym on Thursday night.

Brandon had four players scoring in double digits led by Melanie Thompson with 21 points, followed by Allie Butz with 17. Winnipeg native Tanysha Robinson had 14 points and Jayla Bousquet had 12 for the Bobcats who shot an impressive 48% from the field on the night.

Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with 17 points followd by Dawna Wright's 13 points and nine rebounds. First year guard Rosemary Mills had 11 points, including three-three pointers and rookie sensation Amy Ogidan had 10 points.

The victory leaves Brandon with a record of 1-20 while the Wesmen fall to 8-13, still tied with the idle Manitoba Bisons for second spot in the Great Plains Division.

The two teams will conclude the home and home series on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

WESMEN HANG IN EARLY, FALL TO NUMBER TWO BRANDON

The Winnipeg Wesmen were in this game early but ran out of steam later on. The number two ranked Brandon Bobcats defeated the injury plagued Winnipeg Wesmen 91-70 Thursday night in Brandon.

Winnipeg playing without fifth year starters Erfan Nasajpour and Dan Shynkaryk, came out strong in the first half and only trailed 36-34 at halftime.

The Bobcats took control of the game in the second half outscoring Winnipeg 55-36, including 38-26 in the third quarter to bust this game wide open.

Adam Hartman led Brandon with 24 points followed by Dany Charlery with 22.

Matt Opalko led Winnipeg with 16 points and second year guard Nick Lother contributed 12 points.

The Bobcats improve to 19-2, while the Wesmen fall to 9-12. The Wesmen remain tied with the idle Regina Cougars for second place in the Great Plains Division.

Winnipeg and Brandon will wrap up the regular season with a game on Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

BOBCATS DOWN WESMEN IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE

The visiting Brandon Bobcats defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen for the second time in three nights. The Bobcats downed the hometown Wesmen 70-60 in the last regular season game of the season for both teams in front of 1207 spectators at the Duckworth Centre on a chilly Saturday night in Winnipeg.

Brandon's 81-76 victory on Thursday night in Brandon was the teams first win in over three years.

The Bobcats jumped out to an early 7-2 advantage, four  minutes into the game but Winnipeg caught fire going on a 11-6 run to make the score tied at 13-13 after the opening quarter.

The wheels started to come off for the Wesmen in the second quarter as missed opportunities and turnovers led to Brandon outscoring the Wesmen 21-12 in the quarter. Winnipeg struggled late in the quarter only managing two points in the final three minutes.

Brandon went into the halftime break with a 34-25 lead.

The Bobcats continued to play inspired basketball and opened to their lead to double digits, with the biggest lead being 44-29 with under four minutes to play in the third quarter. Brandon held a 48-37 lead with just over one minute to play when Wesmen guard Catie Gooch took the team on her shoulders scoring eight straight points to bring the Wesmen back in the game trailing 48-42 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter Winnipeg closed to within two points 50-48, but that is as close as the Wesmen would come as Brandon drained some key free throws to secure the victory.

Melanie Thompson and Jennalee Burch led Brandon with 17 points and eight rebounds each. Allie Butz had 15 points, including three-three pointers.

Dawna Wright led Winnipeg with 17 points and nine rebounds. Catie Gooch finished the game with 15 points.

The victory leaves Brandon with a record of 2-20 for the season. Winnipeg finishes the regular season with an 8-14 record, which is good enough for second place in the Great Plains Division.

Winnipeg will host the best of three Great Plains Division semi-final against the Manitoba Bisons. Game one will take place on Thursday, February 14 at 7:00 p.m. Game two will be played on Saturday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m. and if necessary game three will take place on Sunday, February 17 at 2:00 p.m.

BOBCATS COMPLETE SWEEP, WESMEN PREPARE FOR PLAYOFFS

The Brandon Bobcats completed a home and home series sweep with a 82-74 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday night in front of 1502 spectators at the Duckworth Centre.

The night started out an emotional one as fifth year players Erfan Nasajpour, Dan Shynkaryk and Matt Opalko all were honoured before the game in which was their last home game as a Wesmen. Nasajpour did not dress due to injury and Shynkaryk dressed but only played the games first two minutes.

The Bobcats took early control of the game in the first quarter, shooting a blistering 67% from the field and in the process building a 24-10 lead after the opening ten minutes.

Winnipeg found their groove in the second quarter going on a 11-2 run in the opening four minutes to cut the Brandon lead to 26-21. Brandon regrouped and opened up a 38-28 lead with just over two minutes to play in the first half. Winnipeg responded once again running off eight straight points to go into the locker room trailing 38-36.

The Bobcats showed why they are the number two ranked team in the country as they regained their composure and were able to outscore Winnipeg 26-15 in the third quarter to open up a 64-51 lead after three quarters.

Winnipeg was able to fight back in the fourth quarter and outscored Brandon 14-6 in the opening four minutes of the quarter to cut the Brandon lead to 70-65. The veteran led Bobcat team scored key baskets down the stretch to secure the victory in the final regular season game for both teams.

All five Brandon starters scored in double digits led by Adam Hartman's 17 points. Yuri Whyms was next with 16 points and a game high 13 rebounds. Yul Michel contributed 14 points. Tarik Tokar and Dany Charlery scored 13 and 10 points respectively.

Matt Opalko in his final home game as a Wesmen played one of his best games scoring a team high 23 points, hauling in 10 rebounds and dishing out six assists. Nick Lother had 15 points, including three-three pointers. Mike James finished with 12 points.

Brandon finishes the regular season with a 20-2 record. Winnipeg finishes the season at 9-13 and in third place in the Great Plains Division. Winnipeg will travel to Regina for the Great Plains Division semi-final. Game one is on Saturday, February 16 at 7:00 p.m. Game two is on Sunday, February 17 at 7:00 p.m. and if needed game three will be played on Monday, February 18 at 2:00 p.m.

nicWESMEN FALL TO BOBCATS IN FIVE

The Winnipeg Wesmen concluded their regular season with a 3-2 (22-25,25-23,25-23,17-25, 15-6) loss to the Brandon Bobcats Sunday afternoon in Brandon, Manitoba.

Winnipeg was also defeated in five sets on Thursday night in the series opener in Winnipeg.

The match was dead even thru the first four sets but Brandon took control in the fifth and final set. Brandon led 8-5 at the timeout in the final set and took control of the set outscoring Winnipeg 7-1 to clinch the victory.

Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks played her last match as a Wesmen and went out in style finishing with a match high 28 kills. Dirks also added 18 defensive digs. Middle blocker Dayna Kiesman finished with nine kills and four blocks. Marlee Bragg had seven kills and two service aces.

Winnipeg finishes with a regular season record of 4-16.

benBRANDON DEFEATS WESMEN ON HOME COURT

The upstart Brandon Bobcats completed a sweep against the Winnipeg Wesmen with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 13-25, 25-20) victory Sunday night in Brandon Manitoba.

The Bobcats defeated the Wesmen in five tough sets on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The Bobcats had the Wesmen on the ropes early in the match winning the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-20.

Winnipeg rebounded in the third set in a big way with a convincing 25-13 set win. Winnipeg finished the third set with an attack percentage of .667%.

Brandon concluded the match with a 25-20 set four victory. The Bobcats finish the regular season with a record of 10-8. Winnipeg drops to 14-4 and finish in second place in the Canada West Conference standings.

Winnipeg will host Trinity Western University in the best of three Canada West semi final series beginning with game one on Friday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 7:00 p.m.
