WESMEN def McMaster 3-1 (22-25, 25-11, 25-23, 25-22)

WESMEN DOWN MCMASTER, ADVANCE TO SEMI FINALS

The #7 ranked Winnipeg Wesmen defeated the #2 ranked McMaster Marauders 3-1 (22-25, 25-11, 25-23, 25-22) in the quarter final match at the CIS Men’s Volleyball Championships Friday afternoon in Laval, Quebec.

“We came out a little nervous, but we served well, blocked well and received well and we even had a few breaks go our way”, said Wesmen head Coach Larry McKay.

Fifth year opposite and CIS Player of the Year Ben Schellenberg led Winnipeg with a match high 18 kills. Third year Middle blocker Ryan DeBruyn had a solid match finishing with 11 kills and an impressive attack percentage of .833. Second year Middle Justin Duff was a force at the net with nine blocks. Setter Dustin Addison-Schneider was named Player of the Game finishing with 46 set assists, three digs and three service aces.

Jeremy Groenveld led McMaster with 13 kills. Peter Hrkal followed with 12 kills.

Winnipeg had a strong match blocking finishing the match with 21 blocks. McMaster finished with 12 blocks.

“Our middle blockers Justin Duff and Ryan DeBruyn did well today, said McKay.

The Wesmen will move on to one semi final against Dalhousie, Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. Wpg Time). The winner of the semi-final match will move onto the gold medal match on Sunday.

Men's Volleyball (CIS Men's Volleyball Championships @ Laval)

WESMEN def Dalhousie 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-16) (Semi-Final)

WESMEN SWEEP DALHOUSIE, ADVANCE TO GOLD MEDAL MATCH

The Winnipeg Wesmen will get a chance to repeat as CIS Men's Volleyball Champions. The Wesmen earned a berth into the gold medal match after sweeping the Dalhousie Tigers 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-16) in the early semi final match Saturday night in Laval, Quebec.

CIS Player of the Year Ben Schellenberg led the Wesmen attack with 14 kills and was named the Wesmen Player of the Game. Andrew Tow had a solid match finishing with 10 kills. Jo Kasdorf was excellent at the Libero position, digging up a match high 15 kills. Middle blocker Ryan DeBruyn was a monster at the net with a combined eight blocks.

6'10" outside Niklas Rademacher led Dalhousie with a match high 15 kills. Daniel Murray was the oly other Tiger in double digits with 12 kills.

"We had a nice flow to the game and played pretty well, it was a solid team effort", said fifth year opposite and team captain Ben Schellenberg.

The Tigers had the early adavantage in a tight first set leading 8-7 and 16-15 at the technical timeouts. Dalhousie extended their lead in the set to 23-18, thanks to bac-to-back aces by Niklas Rademacher. Winnipeg fought back scoring five straight points to tie the set at 23-23. A kill by Andrew Town followed by a big block by Ryan DeBruyn gave Winnipeg a 26-25 lead. The Tigers evened the score at 26-26, but the Wesmen scored the final two points to win the tough first set 28-26.

Set number two started out as the first with a close affair with Winnipeg holding a 8-7 lead after the first timeout. Winnipeg went on a 8-3 run to take a commanding 16-10 lead at the second technical timeout. Dalhousie could get no closer than 4 or 5 points in the set as Winnipeg went on to win the set 25-21.

Winnipeg continued to show their dominance in set number three. Thanks to continued strong blocking and timely kills Winnipeg build up leads of 8-3 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg only got stronger as the Wesmen ended the match with a 25-16 set three win.

Winnipeg will advance to the gold medal match against the winner of the Alberta/Thompson Rivers semi final. The gold medal match will begin at 3:30 p.m. (Wpg Time).

Notes: The Wesmen will be seeking their second consecutive CIS MVB Championship and the 11th in school history, which would be a record. Winnipeg currently holds the record with the Manitoba Bisons.

Men's Volleyball (CIS Men's Volleyball Championships @ Laval)

Alberta def WESMEN 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20) (Final)

WESMEN FALL TO GOLDEN BEARS, WIN SILVER MEDAL

The Winnipeg Wesmen fell just short of a repeat performance from last year. The Wesmen were looking for their second consecutive CIS Men’s Volleyball Championship but the Alberta Golden Bears defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20) in the gold medal match Sunday evening in Laval, Quebec.

Fourth year right side Joel Schmuland led Alberta with 24 kills. CIS Tournament MVP, setter Brock Pehar finished with 43 set assists, four digs and four blocks.

Fifth year opposite Ben Schellenberg, in his final university match was superb collecting 24 kills, eight digs and three blocks. Alan Ahow was next with 11 kills. Fifth year setter Dustin Addison-Schneider, in his final match had 47 set assists and three blocks.Schellenberg and Addison-Schneider were both named to the CIS Tournament All-Star Team.

Alberta gained the early in the first set holding leads of 8-4 and 16-10 at the technical timeouts. The Golden Bears extended their lead to 19-12, which forced Winnipeg to take a timeout. After the timeout Winnipeg scored three straight points to cut the Alberta lead to 19-15. Alberta dominated the rest of the set outscoring Winnipeg 6-2 to win the first set 25-17.

In the second set Alberta jumped out to an 8-5 lead at the first break. Winnipeg trailed 16-15 at the second timeout, when the Wesmen blocking machine took over and the attackers were able to find their spots. Winnipeg evened up the match winning the second set 25-23.

Winnipeg carried the momentum into the third set leading 8-6 after the first technical timeout. The teams were tied at 11-11 when Alberta scored three points to take a 14-11 lead midway thru the set. Alberta had the lead at the second technical timeout 16-14. Winnipeg was able to close the gap to within one point down the stretch but Alberta fought off the Wesmen attack to win the third set 25-23.

The Golden Bears picked up their play in the fourth set. Strong blocking and the ability to shut down the Wesmen attack gave Alberta leads of 8-5 and 16-11 at the technical timeouts. The Wesmen closed the gap to three points but the Golden Bears were able to close out the set with a 25-20 win.
