LAST SECOND HEROICS GIVE BISONS EARLY SERIES LEAD
Manitoba Bison fourth year post Melanie Schlichter sank two free throws with 12 seconds left to give the Manitoba Bisons a 53-51 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen in game one of the Great Plains Division semi-final Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre.
After a Wesmen basket by Jessica Stromberg with 49 seconds left in the game gave Winnipeg a 51-49 lead, Schlichter hit a running jumper with 39 seconds left to tie tie the game at 51-51 setting up the last second heroics.
Winnipeg had a chance to tie the game with a few ticks left on the clock but a two point shot by Dawna Wright was unsuccessful.
Tessa Klassen led Manitoba with a game high 20 points. Schlichter and Kaitlyn Flett each scored 10 points for the Bisons.
Jessica Stromberg led Winnipeg with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Randie Gibson followed with 11 points, including three-three pointers. Amy Ogidan and Dawna Wright both finished with 10 points a piece.
Winnipeg gained the early advantage jumping out to a 13-9 lead after a quick and up-tempo opening quarter of play.
Manitoba outscored Winnipeg 12-7 in the second quarter to go into the half time break leading 21-20.
The Bisons held the lead for a majority of the third quarter until Stromberg made two big plays, first a two point basket to cut the Bison lead to 31-30 and then a steal leading to a Dawna Wright three point play to give the Wesmen a 33-31 lead with just under three minutes to play in the quarter. Tessa Klassen hit back to back baskets to give the Bisons the lead at 36-33 after three quarters.
Manitoba carried the play in the fourth quarter and extended their lead to 46-39 with four minutes left in the game. Winnipeg went on a 10-0 run, which included Randie Gibson scoring eight points to give Winnipeg a 49-46 lead with just over two minutes to play before Schlichter scored seven points, including the game winning free throws.
The Wesmen and Bisons will meet in game two in the best of three series, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN def Trinity Western 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-23)
WESMEN SWEEP SPARTANS TO TAKE EARLY LEAD IN SERIES
The Winnipeg Wesmen did not waste any time on this night. The Wesmen defeated the Trinity Western University Spartans 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-23) in game one of the best of three Canada West Conference quarter-finals on Friday night in Winnipeg.
The Wesmen completed the three game sweep in one hour and seven minutes.
Fourth year outside Alan Ahow led the Wesmen with 12 kills and seven defensive digs. Andrew Town and Paul Kjos followed with eight kills. Town also added seven digs to his totals. Middle Justin Duff had a strong match at the net finishing with three solo blocks.
Fifth year right side Steve Rogalsky led the Spartans with 12 kills. Doug Van Spronsen was next with five kills. Libero Mark Lindemulder led the Spartans with nine defensive digs.
The Spartans started the match on the right foot taking the early advantage at the first technical timeout by a score of 8-6. Winnipeg fought back and after a Ben Schellenberg service ace Winnipeg took the lead at 16-13 at the second break. Schellenberg's strong serving led to eight straight Winnipeg points as the Wesmen won the first set 25-14.
Winnipeg took the leads at both timeouts in the second set by scores of 8-6 and 16-14. Winnipeg continued their strong play, outscoring the Spartans 9-5 down the stretch to win the second set 25-19.
An inspired Trinity Western team came out firing in set number three. The Spartans jumpwed out to leads of 8-7 and 16-13 at the technical timeouts. After the second technical, Winnipeg regained their composure by going on a 6-3 run to tie the third set at 19-19. The teams exchanged points back and fourth at the end of the third set until kills by Alan Ahow and Ben Schellenberg ended the match in Winnipeg's favour. Winnipeg won the third set 25-23.
Game two of the best of three series will take place Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

OGIDAN LEADS WESMEN TO SERIES DECIDING GAME
First year Wesmen guard Amy Ogidan scored 15 of her game high 26 points in overtime to lead Winnipeg to a 86-75 victory over the Manitoba Bisons in game two of the best of three Great Plains Division semi-final Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre. The victory forces a third and deciding game Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.
The Wesmen started this game in high gear by shooting an amazing 76% from the field on their way to a 24-10 lead after the opening quarter.
Manitoba started the second quarter on a 7-2 run to cut the Wesmen lead to single digits at 26-17. Winnipeg restored a double digit lead until just over three minutes to play with Manitoba outscoring the Wesmen 7-2 to go into the locker room at halftime trailing 34-28.
Both teams exchanged baskets in a wild, fast paced third quarter. Winnipeg was able to hang onto their lead but barely as Manitoba closed the gap to two points trailing 50-48 after three quarters.
The Bisons started the fourth quarter with five straight points and gained their first lead of the game leading the Wesmen 53-50 with nine minutes to play in the quarter. Winnipeg regained the lead on a three point play by Jessica Stromberg followed by a two pointer by Alex MacIver to give Winnipeg a 57-55 lead with just over six minutes left to play. The teams exchanged baskets with Manitoba taking the lead with 1:32 left on a three pointer by Kyla Klassen to give the Bisons a 64-63 lead. Randie Gibson connected on one-of-two free throws with 1:15 left to tie the game at 64-64 after regulation time.
Winnipeg outscored Manitoba 22-11 in the extra frame. The Wesmen connected on 8-of-11 (73%) of their shots in the overtime period.
Ogidan was the games top scorer with 26 points and also had a game high 12 rebounds. Dawna Wright finished with 16 points. Randie Gibson scored 12 points, including three-three pointers.
Melanie Schlichter scored a team high 25 points and hauled in 11 rebounds for the Bisons. Tessa Klassen scored 24 points, including four-three pointers.
Game three will be played Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Cenre. The winner will move on to Regina to face the Regina Cougars in the Great Plains Division Final starting next Thursday.

WESMEN ADVANCE TO CANADA WEST FINAL FOUR
The Winnipeg Wesmen advanced to the Canada West Final Four with a 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-18) victory over the Trinity Western University Spartans to win the best of three quarter final series 2-0.
Along with a trip to the Final Four, the Wesmen also gain a berth in the CIS Men's Volleyball Championships in Laval, Quebec at the end of the month. The Canada West Conference receives four spots into the CIS Championships this season.
Winnipeg gained the early advantage in set number one against a determined Spartan team. The Wesmen held slight leads of 8-7 and 16-14 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg went out in front 24-20 but the Spartans battled back with four straight points to tie the score at 24-24. The Spartans fought off two more match points before the Wesmen closed out the first set by a score of 27-25.
The Spartans made adjustments in the second set and jumped out to leads of 8-6 and 16-12 at the two set breaks. Winnipeg settled down and went on a 7-2 run to gain the lead at 19-18 after back to back Ben Schellenberg kills. Winnipeg scored three of the final four points to win the second set 25-22.
The Wesmen turned up the energy another notch in the third set jumping out to leads of 8-4 and 16-10 at the timeouts. Winnipeg took advantage of several Spartan miscues down the stretch to win the third set 25-18.
Andrew Town led Winnipeg with a match high 13 kills. Ben Schellenberg followed with nine kills and a match high 13 digs and three service aces.
Steve Rogalsky led the Spartans with 11 kills and nine defensive digs. Marc Howatson finished with seven kills.
Winnipeg will head to Edmonton to take part in the Canada West Final Four, which begins on Friday night.

COUGARS WIN GAME ONE OF SERIES
The Regina Cougars gained the early advantage in the Great Plains Division semi final series. The Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 64-57 in game one of the best of three series Saturday night in Regina.
The two teams were even throughout the first half of play. Winnipeg played a solid first quarter to take a 20-19 lead. The Cougars outscored Winnipeg by a slim margin of 12-11 in the second quarter to make the score tied at 31-31 at halftime.
The Cougars took the lead in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 19-14 to grab a 50-45 lead after three quarters of play.
Both teams continued their defensive play in the fourth quarter but Regina held their ground for the game one victory.
'We played a great game defensive game, so it is frustrating", said Wesmen Head Coach Dave Crook.
Regina was 23-of-34 from the free throw line in the contest. Winnipeg was 13-of-20.
Peter Lomuro led Winnipeg with 16 points, followed by Mike James with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Winnipeg was once again playing with out Erfan Nasajpour, Dan Shynkaryk and Michael Passley who are all out with injuries.
Game two will be played on Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. Game three if necessary will be played on Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

WESMEN WIN SERIES IN OVERTIME, ADVANCE TO DIVISION FINAL
The Winnipeg Wesmen erased a 15 point half time defecit to defeat the Manitoba Bisons 69-67 in overtime in the third and deciding game of the Great Plains Division semi final Sunday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.
Winnipeg will now advance to the Great Plains Division Final in Regina against the Regina Cougars starting on Thursday night.
After a close first quarter which ended with Manitoba holding a slim 17-16 lead, Manitoba went on fire in the second quarter outscoring Winnipeg 23-9 to open a 40-25 lead at halftime.
The Bisons were an amazing 8-for-12 (67%) from three point territory in the first half. Jenna Ralson, Melanie Schlichter, Michele Hynes and Tessa Klassen all connected for a pair of three pointers. Tessa Klassen left the game with a knee injury four minutes into the game and did not return to action.
The Wesmen started the comeback early on in the second half, starting the third quarter on a 8-0 run to cut the Bison lead to seven at 40-33. Winnipeg kept putting pressure on the Bisons and by quarters end Winnipeg outscored Manitoba 16-5 in the quarter to only trail 45-41 after three quarters.
Winnipeg tied the score at 45-45 on a Alex MacIver basket two minutes into the third quarter and on the next possession Dawna Wright drained a three pointer to give Winnipeg it's first lead since early in the first quarter by a score of 48-45. Both teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the quarter. Amy Ogidan tied the game at 59-59 with 37 seconds left and after a Melanie Schlichter miss with two seconds left the teams were headed to overtime for the second consecutive game.
Manitoba opened the extra frame scoring five straight points to take a 64-59 lead with over three minutes to play. Winnipeg closed to withnin one point and a huge basket by Alex MacIver gave the Wesmen a 65-64 lead with 1:23 left. Catie Gooch hit a free thow and Ogidan hit two free throws with 12 seconds left to extend Winnipeg's lead to 68-64 with 12 seconds left. Kayla Klassen hit a three pointer with 3.5 seconds left to cut the lead to 68-67. Manitoba was forced to foul and Randie Gibson clinched the win with a free throw with two seconds left in overtime.
Dawna Wright led Winnipeg with 15 points, with three-three pointers. Amy Ogidan had a strong game finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Alex MacIver had a strong second half to finish with 12 points and a game high 16 rebounds. Jessica Stromberg added 12 points and Caitie Gooch finished with 10 points and five assists.
Melanie Schlichter led Manitoba with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Michele Hynes scored 11 points, including three-three pointers and five assists.

WESMEN 49 Regina 83
WESMEN SEASON COMES TO AN END
The Winnipeg Wesmen had their 2007/08 season come to an end with a 83-49 defeat to the Regina Cougars in game two of the Great Plains Division semi-final Sunday night in Regina. The Cougars win the series 2-0 and will go on to face the Brandon Bobcats in the Great Plains Division Final.
Regina took full control of the game in the first half building a 53-32 lead at halftime. The Cougars shot an amazing 58% from the field in the first half and were almost perfect from the free throw line connecting on 13-of-14 free throws in the first half.
The struggles continued for the Wesmen in the second half as Winnipeg could only muster 17 points in the half. The Wesmen connected on only 15% of their shots in the half.
Bryden Wright led Regina with 22 points. Matt Opalko, in his final game of his fine university career finished with 11 points.
The Great Plains Division final will begin in Brandon on Friday night.
