WESMEN def Calgary 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 25-18)
"BIG BEN" LEADS WESMEN TO VICTORY OVER DINOS
Fifth year opposite Ben Schellenberg was a one man wrecking crew in leading the number two ranked Winnipeg Wesmen to a 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 25-18) over the Calgary Dinos in front of 1550 spectators at the Duckworth centre Friday night.
Schellenberg finished with a match high 17 kills, 13 defensive digs, five blocks and three service aces in leading the Wesmen to their 13th regular season win.
Winnipeg gained the early advantage in the first set taking a 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout and after a Calgary service error expanding their lead to 16-10 at the second technical. The Dinos made a charge going on a 4-1 run to cut the lead to 17-14 but Alan Ahow and Schellenberg came up with back-to-back blocks and combined with back-to-back service aces by Dustin Addison- Schneider gave the Wesmen a commanding 21-14 lead. Winnipeg would go on to win the opening set 25-18.
In set number two, Calgary gained the upper hand early on leading 8-7 at the first technical timeout before the Wesmen stormed back to take a 16-13 lead at the second technical timeout. Winnipeg fought back from two match points (24-23 & 25-24) to tie the score at 24-24 before Calgary tied the match, winning the second set 26-24.
The Wesmen raced out to a 6-1 lead at the start of the third set and held leads of 8-4 and 16-10 at the timeouts. Calgary played tough and made the Wesmen work for every point in a 25-21 set win for Winnipeg.
Calgary opened up the fourth set looking to force a fifth set. Calgary got off to a great start leading 8-4 at the first timeout. Winnipeg scored four un-answered points to tie the score at 8-8. The teams exchanged points until the second timeout with Winnipeg holding on to a slim 16-15 lead. Winnipeg showed why they are the number two ranked team in the country, closing out the set on a 9-3 run to win the fourth set 25-18.
Paul Kjos also had a strong match for Winnipeg finishing with 13 kills and three blocks. Alan Ahow had nine kills, 12 defensive digs and two blocks.
The Dinos were led by Omar Langford's 12 kills and 10 defensive digs. Oleg Podporin was next with 10 kills and four blocks.
The victory improves Winnipeg's record to 13-2 and temporarily in sole possession of first place in the Canada West Conference standings. Calgary falls below the .500 mark to 7-8.

WESMEN 67 Lethbridge 68
WESMEN LOSE HEARTBREAKER IN LETHBRIDGE
The Winnipeg Wesmen lost a 68-67 heartbreaking decision to the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night in Lethbridge.
Winnipeg had a 67-66 lead with under ten seconds to play. After a Wesmen missed shot, Lethbridge grabbed the rebound and attempted the potential game winning shot but Winnipeg was called for a foul. Hannah Blanchette calmly sank both free throws to give the Pronghorns the victory.
Lethbridge led the game at halftime 39-34. The Wesmen outscored Lethbridge 21-14 in the third quarter to take a 55-53 lead after three quarters.
Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 20 points. Dawna Wright finished with 15 points and Amy Ogidan was also in double digits with 10 points.
The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 8-11 and still tied with Manitoba for second place in the Great Plains Division. Lethbridge improves it;s record to 4-15.
Winnipeg will travel to Calgary this evening and take on the Calgary Dinos saturday night at 7:00 p.m. (Wpg Time)

MISSED OPPORTUNITIES HURT WESMEN
The Winnipeg Wesmen missed some opportunities and it came back to hurt them as the Wesmen were defeated 83-79 by the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night in Lethbridge.
Winnipeg connected on only 36% of their shots from the field, some coming of the easy matter. The Wesmen also struggled at the free throw line going 15-for-24 (63%) from the charity stripe.
Despite the shooting woes, Winnipeg led 39-38 at halftime. The Wesmen had chances to win down the stretch but were unable to capitalize and were forced to foul the Pronghorns, who were able to sink their free throws and clinch the victory.
Erfan Nasajpour led Winnipeg with 14 points followed by Matt Opalko with 13 points and eight rebounds.
The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 9-10 and still tied for second place in the Great Plains Division with the Regina Cougars. Lethbridge improves to 2-17.
Winnipeg will face the Calgary Dinos in Calgary Saturday night at 9:00 p.m. (Wpg Time)

AHOW SHINES, WESMEN BEAT STUBBORN DINOS IN FOUR
It was not easy, but the Winnipeg Wesmen got the job done. The Wesmen defeated a stubborn Calgary Dinos team 3-1 (25-16, 25-15, 18-25, 25-23) Saturday night in Winnipeg.
Alan Ahow was superb on this night leading the Wesmen (14-2) with a match high 21 kills and also adding 10 defensive digs to lead Winnipeg to the victory.
The Wesmen started the match on a great note leading 8-4 and 16-9 at the technical timeouts. Winnipeg closed out the end of the set with two huge blocks by Dustin Addison- Schneider down the stretch to help the Wesmen win the first set 25-16. Omar Langford of the Dinos had seven kills in the opening set.The second set started out on an even note with Winnipeg holding on to a slim 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. The Wesmen showed their strength going on an 8-3 run to jump out to a 16-10 lead at the second technical. Winnipeg closed out the second set on a 9-5 run to cruise to a 25-15 set win and control of the match up two nothing.
Calgary showed their stubborness and determination in set number three jumping out to leads of 8-5 and 16-11 at the set breaks. Winnipeg clawed their way back into the set closing the gap to 18-17 before the Dinos went on a 7-1 run to close out the set in their favour by a score of 25-18.
The two teams continued their epic battle in the fourth set with neither team holding a lead greater than four points, when Winnipeg led 14-10 midway thru the set. Winnipeg came out ahead and ended the fourth set winning 25-23 to close out the match.
Andrew Town led the Wesmen with 14 defensive digs to go along with his eight kills. Ben Schellenberg was quiet early on in the match but came on in the third and fourth sets finishing with eight kills and 10 digs.
Omar Langford led Calgary with 19 kills. Oleg Podporin had eight kills and was a force at the net finishing with six blocks. Andrew Tallas had a match high 19 defensive digs.
Winnipeg improves to 14-2 and tied for first place in the Canada West Conference standings. Calgary's record falls to 7-9.

WESMEN 69 Calgary 76
WESMEN SUFFER SECOND LOSS ON ALBERTA SWING
The Winnipeg suffered their second consecutive loss on a tough Southern Alberta road trip. The Wesmen were defeated 76-69 by the Calgary Dinos, Saturday evening in Calgary.
Winnipeg came out on fire in the first half leading 42-36 at the halftime break thanks to some red hot shooting from the three point area. The Wesmen finished the first half nine-of-16 (53%) from three point territory.
In the second half Winnipeg's shooting went cold connecting on only 23% overall shooting from the field in the second half. Calgary took control of the game, outscoring Winnipeg 40-27 in the second half.
Randie Gibson and Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with 12 points each. Catie Gooch added 11 and Alex MacIver finished with 10 points. Jessica Stromberg was a monster on the boards hauling in a game high 14 rebounds.
Winnipeg falls to 8-12 on the season and remain tied with Manitoba for second place in the Great Plains Division. Calgary improves to 15-5.
Winnipeg will conclude the regular season with a home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats on Thursday night in Brandon and returning to the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night.

WESMEN 62 Calgary 98
INJURY DEPLETED WESMEN NO MATCH FOR DINOS
The Winnipeg Wesmen playing without two fifth year starters were no match for the third ranked Calgary Dinos. The Dinos defeated the Wesmen 98-62 Saturday night in Calgary.
The Wesmen were without guard Erfan Nasajpour and post Dan Shynkaryk, who were both injured in last nights game in Lethbridge. Both players are listed as day-to-day.
Calgary had complete control of the game leading 44-26 at halftime. The Dinos outscored the Wesmen 26-11 in the third quarter to open up a 70-37 lead against a shortened Winnipeg lineup that featured only nine players.
Cam Hornby led Winnipeg with 17 points, including five-three pointers and three assists. Mike James followed with 13 points and seven rebounds.
The loss drops Winnipeg's record to 9-11 and remain tied with the Regina Cougars for second place in the Great Plains Division. Calgary improves to 17-3 and in first place in the Central Division.
The Wesmen will wrap up the regular season with a home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats on Thursday night in Brandon and Saturday night in Winnipeg.
