ONE CHANCE LEFT FOR WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM TO REACH NATIONALS

The Winnipeg Wesmen willl have one chance to reach the CIS Nationals. The Wesmen were defeated 60-55  by the top seed UBC Thunderbirdsin their opening game of the Canada West Final Four tournament Friday night at the War Memorial Gymnasium in Vancouver. Winnipeg will face the defending CIS champions Simon Fraser in the bronze medal match at 2:00 p.m. (4:00 p.m. wpg time). The winner of the Winnipeg-Simon Fraser match will earn the final Canada West berth into the CIS National Championship next week in Fredricton, New Brunswick. The Wesmen were unable to put points on the board in the final minute of play which allowed the T-Birds to score the games winning points. " We did not score in the final minute when we had to", said Wesmen Head Coach Tanya McKay. The first half of the game was highlighted by tight defence by both teams as the halftime score was 27-26 in UBC's favour. The Wesmen held the T-Birds to 28% shooting in the first half. In the second half Winnipeg gained the momentum back after back-to-back three point plays from Randie Gibson and Stefanie Timmersman gave the Wesmen a 34-31 lead. UBC guard Erica McGuinness, who scored a game high 28 points nailed a three pointer at the midway point of the second half to give UBC a 41-40 lead. The teams exchanged baskets until Jae Pirnie gave the Wesmen a 53-51 lead with less than three minutes to play. UBC came down to tie the score when on the next play Uzo Asagwara made a great move to give the Wesmen a 55-53 lead with one minute to play. McGuinness once again came thru with a big basket to pull UBC even once again. UBC clinched the victory with a big three point play from Kim Howe and a pair of free throws with time running out. Uzo Asagwara and Stefanie Timmersman led the Wesmen with 17 points apiece.

Notes: UBC outrebounded the Wesmen 45-33...UBC had 21 free throw attempts compared to only seven by the Wesmen.

WESMEN 53 SIMON FRASER 81  (Canada West Final Four Bronze Medal Game) @UBC

WESMEN SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE WITH LOSS TO SIMON FRASER

The Wesmen women's basketball team had their hopes for a fifth straight trip to the CIS Championships dashed on this day. The Wesmen were soundly defeated 81-53 by the defending CIS champions Simon Fraser University Clan in the bronze medal game at the Canada West Final Four in Vancouver on Saturday afternoon. The winner of this game earned the final Canada West spot in the CIS Nationals next weekend in New Brunswick. The Wesmen started the game strong racing out to a quick 6-0 lead. The lead did not last long as SFU went on a 13-2 run, including a pair of three pointers to take the lead once and for all at 18-12 midway thru the first half. Winnipeg was within five with the score 33-25 when the Clan scored three straight three pointers to take a 39-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half Simon Fraser continued their domination as they continued to have a double digit lead throughout the half. The Wesmen were led by Uzo Asagwara who scored 24 points and Jenny Ezirim contributed with 10 points and five steals. Courtney Gerwing led Simon Fraser with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Simon Fraser was 8-of 23 from three point territory, Winnipeg was 1-for-7. Simon Fraser outrebounded Winnipeg 38-25.
