WESMEN SQUEAK PAST BISONS FOR VICTORY

erfan nasajpourIt may have been too close for comfort. The University of Winnipeg Wesmen escaped with a 69-67 victory over the University of Manitoba Bisons on Thursday night in front of 1500 spectators at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen came out on fire building an 8-2 lead before the game was three minutes old. At the midway point of the half the Wesmen's lead was cut to eight by the stubborn Bisons. In a tight defensive struggle the Wesmen were able to take a 36-34 lead into the locker room at halftime. In the second half the Wesmen came out firing as they outscored the Bisons 21-9 to build a 57-43 lead with less than ten minutes to play. The Bisons caught fire and took advantage of Winnipeg fouls and turnovers to cut the Wesmen lead to two points with under 30 seconds to play. After Erfan Nasajpour missed a free throw, the Bisons had a chance to tie or win the game. Nasajpour would have a say in that matter as he came up big with a key defensive stop to give the Wesmen the victory. Nasajpour had a double-double for the Wesmen scoring 19 points and adding 10 rebounds. First year recruit Dwhyte Brissett continued his impressive play off the bench scoring 13 points. The cross town rivalry will continue Saturday night when the two teams meet at the University of Manitoba. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
