WESMEN CAPTURE SILVER AT LEA MARC TOURNAMENT

October 2, 2005 - The Wesmen came up just short in their quest for gold. Winnipeg was defeated in the gold medal match by the University of Regina Cougars 3-2 (25-15, 21-25, 18-25, 25-17, 15-11).The Wesmen got off to a slow start in the match as the Cougars opened up a quick 8-1 lead in the process taking advantage of some missed opportunities by the Wesmen. The Cougars took the first set 25-15. In the second set the Wesmen came out with more jump and got great contributions from Kristin Brisebois, Nicola Dirks, and Kaitlyn Jackson to take the second set 25-21. The third set was all even until the Wesmen went on a 6-0 run to take the third set 25-18 and a 2 -1 games lead. In set number four the Wesmen once again were forced to come from behind as Regina built an 8-4 lead at the technical timeout. The Cougars overpowered the Wesmen for the remainder of the set that they won by a score of 25-17 to force a fifth set. In the fifth set the Winnipeg got off to a rocky start as the Cougars built a quick 8-5 lead midway thru the set. The Cougars ended up taking the deciding set 15-11. The tournament all-stars were: Christa Borisov-McGill, Mila Miguel-Toronto, Lee Hrenchuk -Winnipeg, Christa Desrochers-Winnipeg, Anne Fleming- Regina, Leanne Chen- Regina. Jennifer Prokopetz of Regina was the named the tournament MVP.

WESMEN TO GO FOR GOLD AT LEA MARC CHALLENGE

October1, 2005 -The Wesmen Women's Volleyball will play for gold. The team overcame a slow start to defeat McGill 3-1 (12-25, 25-18 ,25-15, 25-23) Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen had troubles in the first set as McGill kept Winnipeg's hitters off balance and finishing the set on a 13-2 run to win the set 25-12. In the second set the Wesmen made the proper adjustments and played up to their capabilities winning the set 25-18. The third set started out as a back and forth affair until the Wesmen went on a 7-0 run idway thru the set to cruise to a 25-15 set win. In set number four the Wesmen relied on key kills from their power hitters and overcame a early 6-2 defecit to fight to a 25-23 match ending set win. Marlee Bragg had 10 kills for the Wesmen and Nicola Dirks contributed with 8 kills. The Wesmen finish the round robin portion of the tournament with a perfect 4-0 record and will face the Regina Cougars, who also had a perfect 4-0 record, in the gold medal match at the Duckworth Centre on Sunday afternoon. Match time is 12:00 p.m.

WESMEN REMAIN PERFECT AT LEA MARC CHALLENGE

October 1, 2005 - The Wesmen Women’s Volleyball Team kept their perfect record intact as they at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge at The University of Winnipeg. The Wesmen defeated the Simon Fraser University Clan 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-15, 25-23) Saturday afternoon to improve their record to 3-0.In the first set the Wesmen got off to a quick 3-0 start and built a 8-5 lead at the first timeout. The Wesmen used strong serving and timely kills to win the first set 25-13.Simon Fraser took advantage of some Wesmen errors and was able to keep the Wesmen off balance on offence as they took the second set 25-22.Set number three belonged to the Wesmen from the start as they built an 8-3 lead at the technical timeout and cruised to a 25-15 third set win.In the fourth set the Wesmen were looking for the kill and it showed as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead. The Clan though would not give up as they gave the Wesmen all they could handle and eventually pulled even with the Wesmen by a score of 23-23. The Wesmen fought off the late Clan surge and eventually won the set 25-23.Fourth year middle, Kaitlyn Jackson had a strong game for the Wesmen finishing with 10 kills. The Wesmen had a total of six service aces in the match.The Wesmen will next face McGill, Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN WIN BRANDON MEN'S VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

October 1, 2005 - The Wesmen Men's Volleyball Team captured the Brandon University Men's Volleyball Tournament Saturday night in Brandon. The Wesmen defeated the Winnipeg Nemesis Senior Team 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 28-30, 15-12) to capture the title in the one vs two final.Earlier in the day the Wesmen defeated the same Nemesis team 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 25-16). The team finished the preliminary round with three straight 3-0 sweeps.

WESMEN PERFECT ON DAY ONE AT LEA MARC TOURNEY

September 30, 2005 - The Winnipeg Wesmen came from behind to defeat the University of Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19, 15-9) at the lea marc Volleyball Challenge at the Duckworth Centre. The victory combined with the team’s earlier win against Brandon University gives the Wesmen a perfect 2-0 record after day one of the tournament.In the first set the Wesmen and Blue’s exchanged points back and fourth. Winnipeg went on a 7-0 run to put them ahead 15-14, but Toronto rallied after the technical timeout to take the set 26-24.Set number two belonged to the Wesmen as they went on a 4-0 run midway thru the set to cruise to a 25-19 set win to even the match.The Varsity Blues fought off a 6-0 run by the Wesmen to pull out a 25-20 third set win to take a 2-1 lead.The Wesmen showed their determination in the fourth set as they took advantage of errors by the Blues and took the set 25-19 to even the match at 2-2 and force a fifth and deciding set.Winnipeg started off strong in the set as they opened up a 3-0 lead and never looked back as they captured the set 15-9,Wesmen first year player Marlee Bragg was chosen the Player of the Game as she led the Wesmen with 14 kills. Kaitlyn Jackson had 9 kills in a strong effort.The Wesmen will take on the Simon Fraser University Clan on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN VICTORIOUS IN OPENING MATCH

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen opened up the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge with a 3-0 victory over the University of Brandon Bobcats.The Wesmen dominated from the start of the match as they cruised to a first set win by a score of 25-18. In the second set the Wesmen went on a 9-1 run to take the set by a score of 25-10. Set number three once again saw the Wesmen dominate as they opened up a quick 4-0 lead to run away with the set by a score of 25-14.Nicola Dirks and Kaitlyn Jackson each had seven kills for the Wesmen. First year starter Marlee Bragg had an impressive home debut finishing with four kills and several key defensive plays.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL START OFF 2-0 IN BRANDON

September 30, 2005 - The Wesmen Men’s Volleyball team opened up the Brandon University men’s Volleyball Tournament with a perfect 2-0 record after the first day of competition. In the teams first match held in Souris,Mb, the Wesmen defeated Brandon University 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-20. In the teams evening match held at Brandon University, Larry McKay's team defeated the University of Regina Cougars 3-0 (29-27,28-26,25-18). The Wesmen will end the preliminary round with a match against the Winnipeg Senior Nemesis Team. The Playoff round begins Saturday evening.
