GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

TEAMS TAKE TO THE COURT FOR INTERSQUAD MATCHES/GAMES
This past week the Wesmen Volleyball and Basketball teams took part in the annual potluck and intersquad matches/games. The event was a great success as the teams were able to show off their skills to the parents, grandparents, and boosters in attendance. Thanks to everyone who brought food along and made this event a great success once again.

2009 LEA MARC VOLLEYBALL CHALLENGE BEGINS THURSDAY
The 2009 “Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge” will take place at the Duckworth Centre from October 1 – 4, 2009. Women’s teams from Winnipeg, Wilfred Laurier, Manitoba, Toronto, Regina and Brandon will take part in the four day tournament. As an added feature the men’s volleyball team will take on the University of Montreal in an exhibition match on Thu, Oct 1 at 7:00 p.m. Complete draw and results will be available at www.wesmen.ca

19TH  ANNUAL DUCKWORTH CHALLENGE COMING UP
It is that time of the year again, the 19th annual Duckworth Challenge will take place at the University of Winnipeg on Tuesday, October 6. The Wesmen Volleyball teams will battle their cross town rivals, the Manitoba Bisons. Once again fans can get their Bisons BBQ’ed, as Bison Burgers will be served hot off the grill from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m as you enter the Duckworth Centre. The action begins at 6:00 p.m. with the women's game followed by the men's game at 8:00 p.m. The basketball portion of the competition will take place the following night (Wednesday) at the University of Manitoba.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
The men’s team took part in the annual intersquad game last Wednesday evening at the Duckworth Centre.  The team put on an entertaining game that came down to a last second basket by James Horaska to give the white team a one point victory over the red team. The team will continue practicing for the upcoming season and will hit the court this Tuesday night in their annual game against the Wesmen Alumni in the annual Alumni Challenge. The action gets underway at the Duckworth Centre at 7:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Due to several players and a coach feeling under the weather, the women’s team was unable to showcase their talents last Wednesday night in the Intersquad game. Tanya McKay’s team will hit the court this Tuesday night in the annual Alumni Challenge against former Wesmen greats. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Head Coach Larry McKay was able to see his squad hit the court this past Tuesday night in the annual Intersquad match. The team will have a busy week coming up with the annual Alumni match on Wednesday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The team will host the University of Montreal in a special exhibition match on Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. as a part of the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. There will be no rest for the team as they will travel to Brandon the following morning to participate in the Brandon University Invitational Tournament. The Wesmen will take on teams from Brandon, Regina and Montreal in the two day tournament.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The team took part in the annual Intersquad match this past Tuesday night at the Duckworth Centre. The team than hit the road on Friday to Regina to take part in the three day University of Regina Invitational Tournament. The team lost both of their matches on the opening day, losing 3-0 to Manitoba (25-15, 25-16, 25-18)  in the early match and in the evening match dropping a 3-2 decision to Simon Fraser (18-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11). On Saturday the team lost their final preliminary match 3-1 to Alberta (25-15, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20) and relegated to the B side of the tournament. In the semi final round that same evening the team was defeated 3-0 by Red Deer College (25-18, 25-22, 30-28). On Sunday the team took on Saskatchewan in the seventh place match and defeated the Huskies 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-21) The team will take part in the annual Alumni Challenge on Wednesday night and than  prepare to host the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge that will take place from Thursday to Sunday at the Duckworth Centre.
