The University of Winnipeg Wesmen would like to thank all the sponsors, athletes, coaches, media and fans for making the 42nd Annual Wesmen Classic a huge success once again. In the month of December 118 teams and over 1500 participants ranging in age from Grade 3 to University descended upon the Duckworth Centre to participate in one of the six Classics that took place.

The main section of the Classic held from Dec. 27 – 30 attracted approx. 14,000 spectators who enjoyed the finest in High School and University basketball. The winners during the month were as follows:

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The men’s basketball team finished in seventh place at the 42nd Annual Wesmen Classic held at the end of December. The team finished the three day Wesmen Classic with a record of 1-2. The team lost their opening game 80-71 to the Alberta Golden Bears on Sunday evening. Peter Lomuro led the Wesmen with a game high 22 points. Winnipeg moved on to the consolation semi-final the following evening and were defeated 76-53 by Fraser Valley. Christopher Jordan led the team with 14 points. Winnipeg hit the win column on Tuesday afternoon defeating the Saskatchewan Huskies 73-63 in the seventh place game. Nick Lother was named the Player of the Game after scoring 29 points (including six-three pointers). The team resumed their Canada West regular season schedule last night with a 69-55 loss to the Manitoba Bisons at the Duckworth Centre. Nick Lother led the team with 19 points, followed by Peter Lomuro’s 12 points and eight rebounds. The Wesmen (2-9) will take on the Bisons this evening at the University of Manitoba. Game time is 8:00 p.m. Winnipeg will close out the week with a home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats, beginning Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre at 8:00 p.m. and concluding on Saturday night in Brandon.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The women’s team started the second half their schedule on a great note. The Wesmen defeated the Manitoba Bisons 74-62 Sunday night at the Duckworth Centre. Amy Ogidan led the team with 22 points. Alex MacIver continued her fine play scoring 18 points. Catie Gooch played an all round great game scoring 16 points and adding five assists and four steals. The Wesmen (7-4) will take on the Bisons this evening at 6:00 p.m. at the University of Manitoba. Winnipeg will close out the week with a home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats, beginning Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre at 6:00 p.m. and concluding on Saturday night in Brandon.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Diane Scott and her team traveled to Toronto to take part in the University of Toronto Invitational Tournament. The team opened up the three day tournament with a 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22) loss to Toronto. On Saturday morning Winnipeg played hard in a tough 3-2 (25-23, 24-26, 25-13, 18-25, 15-13) loss to McMaster. The team recovered and defeated St.Mary’s 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-23) in the evening match. In the final match of the tournament on Sunday morning York defeated Winnipeg 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-14). Ariel Smith was named the Winnipeg Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. The Wesmen (1-9) will resume their Canada West regular season with a home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats on Thursday night in Brandon before returning home to face the Bobcats at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
 
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Larry McKay and his team are fully relaxed and anxious to resume their Canada West regular season schedule. Winnipeg (6-2) will begin the second half on Thursday with a visit to Brandon to face the Bobcats. The two teams will meet at the Duckworth Centre on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.
