WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Andrew Town, men’s volleyball
Andrew played a big part in helping the Wesmen to a two match split against the Brandon Bobcats. Andrew led the Wesmen on Saturday to a 3-1 victory at the Duckworth Centre with a match high 19 kills and 10 defensive digs.
• 38 total kills
• 16 defensive digs
• Team high 19 kills in Thursday’s match in Brandon
• Currently third in Canada West in kills (180) and fourth in points (199).
 
Catie Gooch, women’s basketball
Catie scored a game high 26 points to lead the Wesmen to a 79-68 win against Brandon on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre.
• 43 points
• 12 rebounds
• Nine assists
• Currently ninth in Canada West scoring (12.9 ppg)


GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

On Sunday, January 25th the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters will hold their annual awards ceremony and dinner. For the second consecutive year the  Wesmen will have a part in the festivities. The 2007-08 Men’s Volleyball Team that won a silver medalist the CIS Championship last March is a finalist in the Team of the Year category. Also nominated for an award is Men’s Volleyball star Ben Schellenberg, who is a finalist in the Male Athlete of the Year category. Tickets are available by contacting Ken Kobelka. This Friday night at the Women’s Volleyball match against the Calgary Dinos, the first 100 fans in attendance will receive a trial pass to the Bill Wedlake Fitness Centre.

WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

This past Thursday night was WMBA night at the Duckworth Centre. Hundreds of players and coaches were in attendance cheering on the Wesmen. Congratulations to Denzel Soliven of Team Mayhem who was the winner of a set of basketball shoes for his team thanks to the Winnipeg Wesmen, Converse and Team Outfitters.

Members of the Women’s Volleyball team are currently helping out wit the Jr.Wesmen Girl’s Volleyball program. The players involved are Ariel Smith, Leah Brezinski, Lauren Sears and Alix Krahn.

This Saturday afternoon former members of the Wesmen Basketball teams will be conducting a clinic for children from the Rossbrook House. The clinic will take place at the Victoria Albert School.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Men’s Volleyball team were involved in a key home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats this past week. In the opening match on Thursday night in Brandon the Bobcats defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-22). Andrew Town led the team with 19 kills and six defensive digs. Paul Kjos and Danny Andres each had four blocks. On Saturday night the scene shifted to the Duckworth Centre and the Wesmen did not disappoint the home crowd beating Brandon 3-1 (20-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-23). Andrew Town led the Wesmen with 19 kills and 10 defensive digs. Paul Kjos finished with 11 kills. Justin Duff was solid in serving and at the net with three aces and five blocks. Maurice Williams finished with four blocks. Winnipeg currently has a record of 7-3, tied for third in the Canada West Conference standings. The team will be on the road for two matches against Calgary (9-3) on Friday and Saturday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Diane Scott and her team were in action this past week against the number four ranked Brandon Bobcats in a home and home series. On Thursday night in Brandon to start the series, the Bobcats defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-14). Lauren Sears led the Wesmen with five kills and three blocks. Tessa Peterson led the team in defensive digs with 12. On Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre, the Wesmen played a better match but were defeated 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-16) by Brandon. Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 10 kills and eight digs. Marlee Bragg added eight kills. Winnipeg currently sits with a record of 1-11 and will host the Calgary Dinos (9-3) for two matches on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is 7:00 p.m. for both nights.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Women’s team had a busy week playing three games in six days. On Monday night the Wesmen visited the U of M and defeated the Manitoba Bisons 71-59. Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 26 points. Jessica Stromberg scored 13 points and hauled down seven rebounds. Alex MacIver finished with a game high nine rebounds while adding 11 points. On Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre, Catie Gooch scored 26 points to lead the Wesmen to a 79-68 win over the Brandon Bobcats. Jessica Stromberg finished with a double-double 12 points and 12 rebounds. Alex MacIver continued her fine play as of late scoring 10 points and hauling down 11 rebounds. The Wesmen completed the sweep against Brandon on Saturday night with a 66-56 win against the Bobcats in Brandon. Amy Ogidan led the team with 16 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Catie Gooch added 13 points and three steals. The perfect week leaves Winnipeg with a record of 10-4, two points behind the Regina Cougars (11-3) for first place in the Great Plains Division. Winnipeg will head on the road for a pair of games starting this Friday night against UBC (6-9) before heading to Victoria to take on the Vikes (9-6) on Saturday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Dave Crook and his team were involved in a busy week as well playing three games during the week. On Monday night the Wesmen got a big 77-68 win against the Manitoba Bisons at the U of M. Peter Lomuro led Winnipeg with 23 points and six assists. Nick Lother scored 14 points and added four assists. Jeff Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 10 rebounds. The team struggled this past Thursday night in an 89-61 loss to Brandon at the Duckworth Centre. Mike James led the team with 13 points and nine rebounds. Nick Lother added 12 points. On Saturday, the team headed Brandon looking for a split in the home and home series. The team played better but fell just short in an 80-79 loss. Peter Lomuro scored a game high 25 points. Mike James added a double-double 14 points, 11 rebounds. Nick Lother also added a double-double collecting 10 points and dishing out 10 assists. The team currently has a record of 3-11, two points back of the Manitoba Bisons for third place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen will head to British Columbia for a pair of games starting this Friday night against the UBC Thunderbirds (13-2) and concluding the trip the following night in Victoria against the Vikes (10-5).
