Dan Lother, men’s volleyball
Dan, third year setter was instrumental in setting up the offense in leading the Wesmen to a two match sweep against the Manitoba Bisons. On Thursday night Lother finished the match with 43 set assists which is a Canada West match high for a three set match.

• Currently 5th in Canada West Conference in assists averaging 10.09 assists per game
Catie Gooch, women’s basketball
Gooch, third year guard played a big part in helping the Wesmen earn a weekend split against Simon Fraser and Trinity Western. In Saturday’s 74-54 win over the Spartans, Gooch finished the game with 17 points, three-three pointers, eight rebounds, five assists and six steals.

• Currently 7th in Canada West scoring averaging 12.9 points per game.
GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
The Women’s Basketball team will play host to the Manitoba Bisons in the best of three Great Plains Division semi final series beginning Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. Individual game tickets and series passes are now available for purchase at the Duckworth Customer Service Centre or on game day at the second floor ticket booth.
The University of Winnipeg Wesmen captured the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge Thursday night at the University of Manitoba. The Men's Volleyball team defeated Manitoba to give the University of Winnipeg a 3-1 victory in the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge.
Congratulations to Kirk Cantley, who was the winner of the Las Vegas Getaway trip, sponsored by Out ‘n About Travel inc. The draw was held this past Friday night at the Wesmen – Simon Fraser Basketball game.
It was a busy weekend for the Jr.Wesmen Girl’s Volleyball Program. On Saturday the 17U team hosted a tournament. The team from Selkirk finished in first place followed by the Jr.Wesmen team in second. The 18U team finished in third place at the Balmoral Volleyball Club Tournament .The team defeated the Cobras for the bronze medal.
WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
The Inner City Jr. Wesmen Youth Basketball team has organized the inaugural "Heart of the Community" Basketball Tournament for 14 and under girls and boys teams. The tournament will take place February 13 and 14, 2009. For more information and to register please log onto www.wesmen.ca
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The women’s team completed their regular season with two home games against Simon Fraser and Trinity Western. On Friday night against the number one ranked Simon Fraser Clan the Wesmen were defeated 87-56. Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with 17 points, followed by Randie Gibson with 10 points. On Saturday night the team rebounded beating Trinity Western 74-54. Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with 17 points. Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team finish the regular season in second place in the Great Plains Division with a record of 13-9. Winnipeg will host the best of three division semi-final against the Manitoba Bisons. Game one will be played on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre. Game two will take place on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and if necessary game three will take place on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Dave Crook and his team suffered two losses to close out the regular season. On Friday night Simon Fraser defeated the Wesmen 70-62. Nick Lother led Winnipeg with 19 points. On Saturday night Winnipeg dropped a 72-64 decision to the Trinity Western University Spartans. Nick Lother once again led Winnipeg in scoring with 17 points. The Wesmen finish the regular season with a 6-16 record and third place in the Great Plains Division. The team will head to Regina to take on the Cougars in the best of three Great Plains Division semi-final beginning on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Game two will take place on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and if necessary game three will take place on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Head Coach Larry McKay and his team ended the regular season with two victories against the Manitoba Bisons in a home and home series. On Thursday at the Duckworth Challenge at the University of Manitoba, the Wesmen defeated the Bisons 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-13). Alan Ahow led the Wesmen with 13 kills. Dan Lother finished the match with 43 set assists and was named the Wesmen Duckworth Challenge Player of the Game. On Sunday afternoon it was not only the final regular season match of the year but it was the final home match for fifth year team members Alan Ahow, Andrew Town, Paul Kjos and therapist Liz Proskurnik. Each individual were honored in a pre game ceremony and given a special plaque by Head Coach Larry McKay and Acting Athletic Director Doran Reid. The Wesmen went on to win the match over Manitoba 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22). A very ill but determined Andrew Town led the Wesmen with a match high 20 kills. The team finishes the regular season with a 10-8 record and will travel to Calgary in the best of three Canada West Divisional Semi-Finals starting with game one on Friday evening at 9:00 p.m (Wpg Time). Game two will take place on Saturday at 9:00 p.m. (Wpg Time) and if necessary game three will be played on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. (Wpg Time).
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Women’s Team completed their 2008-09 season with a home and home series against the Manitoba Bisons. On Thursday night at Manitoba the Bisons defeated Winnipeg 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-21) in the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge. First year sensation Ariel Smith led the team with 11 kills and 12 defensive digs. Smith was named the Wesmen Duckworth Challenge Player of the Game. In Sunday’s regular season finale at the Duckworth Centre, the Wesmen were defeated 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-10). Ariel Smith once again led the Wesmen with seven kills and 13 defensive digs. The team finishes the season with a record of 1-19 and will not qualify for the playoffs. Head Coach Diane Scott will soon be looking forward and planning for the 2009-2010 season.
