WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Alan Ahow, men’s volleyball
Alan, in his fifth and final season played a big part in helping the Wesmen earn a weekend split against the UBC Thunderbirds. In Saturday’s match, Ahow finished with a team high 17 kills, five digs and was strong at the net with four blocks.
• 23 total kills in two matches
• 10 defensive digs
• Five blocks
• Currently 4th in Canada West Conference in digs (122) and 12th in kills (155)

Marlee Bragg, women’s volleyball
Marlee, fourth year left side continued her strong play as of late in a weekend series against the UBC Thunderbirds. On Saturday night Bragg finished the match with 10 kills, two service aces, eight digs and one block.
• 17 total kills in two matches
• 14 defensive digs
• Three service aces and two blocks
• Team leader in kills (154) and second in blocks (22) and digs (110).

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

Attention all Wesmen fans….how does a trip to Las Vegas sound, well it is possible. The Winnipeg Wesmen in conjunction with Out n’ About Travel is giving away a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Draw ballots are available at all Wesmen home games/matches. Each ballot cost $2.00 with all proceeds going towards the University of Winnipeg’s Athletic Scholarship Fund. The draw will be made at the Fri, Feb. 6th basketball game vs Simon Fraser. All entrants must be in attendance to win.

The 2009 Wesmen Summer Sports Camps will once again be taking place at the Duckworth Centre in July and August. Information and on line registration will soon be available at www.wesmen.ca

WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

The Inner City Jr. Wesmen Youth Basketball team has organized the inaugural "Heart of the Community" Basketball Tournament for 14 and under girls and boys teams. The tournament will take place February 13 and 14, 2009. For more information and to register please log onto www.wesmen.ca

The Winnipeg School Safety Patrols and the Winnipeg Police School Education Unit were special guests of the Wesmen at this past Friday’s Volleyball match against UBC.

This past Sunday the University of Winnipeg Jr Wesmen GVB 18U and 17U teams competed in the Bison Volleyball Challenge, finishing 3rd and 5th respectively! With both athlete and coach development being a key focus this early in the season, it was great to see all athletes participating and all coaches active in the process.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Larry McKay and his team played host to the UBC Thunderbirds for a pair of matches at the Duckworth Centre. In the opening match on Friday night the Wesmen started the weekend on the right foot defeating the T-Birds 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-23, 25-20). Andrew Town, a fourth year outside led the Wesmen with a team high 21 kills and 13 defensive digs, two blocks and one service ace. Third year middle Justin Duff was also solid for the Wesmen finishing with 10 kills, three blocks and two service aces. On Saturday night UBC earned a weekend split by defeating the Wesmen 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 26-24, 25-20). Alan Ahow led the Wesmen with 17 kills, five digs, and four blocks. Andrew Town, Justin Duff and Danny Andres each had 11 kills. Paul Kjos followed with 10 kills. Duff was solid in the middle collecting six blocks in the match. Winnipeg's record sits at 8-8 and are currently in fifth place in the tough Canada West standings. The Wesmen will conclude the regular season with a home and home series against the Manitoba Bisons (4-12), beginning Thursday night at the U of M in the volleyball portion of the Duckworth Challenge. The scene will shift to the Duckworth Centre on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Fifth year players Alan Ahow and Paul Kjos will be playing their last regular season home match and will be recognized in a pre match ceremony. The match will be carried live on 1290 CFRW.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Diane Scott and her squad played host to the defending national champions the UBC Thunderbirds for two matches. On Friday night UBC defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14). Fourth year left side Marlee Bragg led the Wesmen with seven kills. First year right/left side Ariel Smith had six kills and 10 defensive digs. Lauren Sear, second year middle had two blocks in the contest. Libero Devyn DeGagne led the team with 11 defensive digs. On Saturday night the Wesmen put up a good fight as UBC was forced to play their best, defeating the Wesmen 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-22) in a tough match. Marlee Bragg led the Wesmen with 10 kills and two service aces. Libero Devyn DeGagne led the team with 14 defensive digs. Alix Krahn and Lauren Sears each had three blocks. The Wesmen sit with a record of 1-17. The Wesmen will conclude the regular season with a home and home series against the Manitoba Bisons (11-7), beginning Thursday night at the U of M in the volleyball portion of the Duckworth Challenge. The scene will shift to the Duckworth Centre Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team had a successful week defeating the Brandon Bobcats in both games of a home and home series. On Thursday night in Brandon the Wesmen snapped a four game losing streak with a 70-56 win over the Bobcats. Randie Gibson led Winnipeg with 17 points, including four-three pointers and four assists. Amy Ogidan followed with 12 points, two assists and two steals. Jessica Stromberg had a strong game with 10 points and a team high seven rebounds. Sarah Reilly also figured in double digits scoring 10 points. On Sunday afternoon Catie Gooch scored a game high 22 points to lead the Wesmen to a 78-60 victory to complete the sweep. Gooch scored 20 points in the first half, including four-three pointers to pace the Wesmen early on. Amy Ogidan had a double-double for the Wesmen scoring 17 points and adding 10 rebounds. The pair of wins improves the Wesmen's record to 12-8. Winnipeg will host Simon Fraser (20-1) on Friday night and conclude the regular season against Trinity Western on Saturday (11-10) at the Duckworth Centre. Game time both nights is 6:00 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Dave Crook and his team entered a home and home series with the Brandon Bobcats fighting for the final playoff spot in the Great Plains Division. In the opening game in Brandon on Thursday, Brandon defeated the Wesmen 85-75. Mike James led the Wesmen with 14 points and 10 rebounds. James Horaska also finished with 14 points, including a pair of three pointers and came up with two steals. Nick Lother added 14 points and four assists. Jeff Shynkaryk also figured in double digits scoring 10 points. On Sunday night at the Duckworth Centre Winnipeg fell short in a 68-64 loss to the Bobcats. Winnipeg trailed by as much as 18 points and almost completed the comeback. Nick Lother led the Wesmen with 22 points, including three-three pointers. Peter Lomuro added 17 points. Ryan Willerton hauled in a game high nine rebounds. Winnipeg sits with a record of 5-15, two points up on the Manitoba Bisons for the third and final playoff spot in the Great Plains Division. Winnipeg will wrap up their regular season schedule at home against Simon Fraser (12-9) on Friday and Trinity Western (15-6) on Saturday. The game on Saturday will be carried live on 1290 CFRW.
