Andrew Town, men's volleyball
Andrew showed this past weekend why he is one of the top players in the CIS. Town finished the weekend with 71 kills in helping to lead the Wesmen to a 2-1 Canada West semi-final series win over Calgary. In Sunday's final match Town had a career high 30 kills.

Amy Ogidan, women's basketball
Amy, second year guard had nerves of steel in helping the Wesmen defeat the Manitoba Bisons 2-1 in the Great Plains Division Semi-Final at the Duckworth Centre. In Saturday's third and deciding game Ogidan sank two free throws with no time remaining to give the Wesmen a 62-61 series ending victory.

WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
The Inner City Jr. Wesmen Youth Basketball team organized the inaugural "Heart of the Community" Basketball Tournament for 14 and under girls and boys teams. The inaugural tournament was held this past Friday and Saturday and was a successful event.
GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
This past weekend was the final home game for the Wesmen in the 2008-09 season. The entire Wesmen organization would like to thank all their fans, sponsors, boosters and media for helping make this season a success.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team advanced to the Great Plains Division Final in Regina. The Wesmen defeated the Manitoba Bisons 2-1 in three tough and entertaining games at the Duckworh Centre. On Thursday night the Wesmen opened the series with an 82-66 victory over the Bisons. Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with a game high 25 points, including five-three pointers. Randie Gibson scored 15 points, including four-three pointers. Kaitlin Rempel had a team leading nine rebounds and four steals. Manitoba evened the best of three series on Friday with a dramatic last second basket to win 64-62. Amy Ogidan and Jessica Stromberg led the Wesmen with 17 points. Alex MacIver added 10 points. Stromberg completed the double-double hauling in a game high 13 rebounds. Game three on Saturday night came down to the last second. Amy Ogidan sank two free throws with no time on the clock to give the Wesmen a 62-61 win. Caity Gooch led the Wesmen with 15 points and six steals. Ogidan and Jessica Stromberg each finished with 12 points. Kaitlin Rempel finished with a double-double 10 points and 11 rebounds. Winnipeg will travel to Regina for the best of three Great Plains Division Final which starts Thursday night (7:00 p.m.) in Regina. Game two will on Friday night (7:00 p.m.) and game three if necessary will be played on Saturday afternoon at (3:00 p.m.).
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Dave Crook and his team traveled to Regina to take on the Cougars in the best of three Great Plains Division semi-final. The Wesmen played hard all series but were defeated in three games (2-1) to put an end to their 2008-09 season. In Thursday's opening game the Cougars defeated the Wesmen 97-81. Third year guard Peter Lomuro scored a career high 33 points, including five-three pointers in the loss. On Friday Nick Lother exploded for 43 points to lead the Wesmen to a 93-76 victory to tie the best of three series at 1-1. Peter Lomuro added 26 points. Jeff Shynkaryk had a strong defensive game finishing with eight rebounds and a game high six blocks. In game three on Saturday, the Cougars wrapped up the series with an 85-74 victory. Mike James led the Wesmen with 23 points. Nick Lother added 17 points, five assists. Ryan Willerton led the Wesmen with eight rebounds.
MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
Head Coach Larry McKay and his team earned a spot in the Canada West Final Four as well as the CIS Men's Volleyball Championships. The Wesmen played well in defeating the Calgary Dinos 2-1 in the Canada West semi-final series in Calgary. In Friday's opening match Calgary defeated the Wesmen 3-2 (30-28, 23-25, 25-22, 16-25, 15-13). Andrew Town led Winnipeg with 22 kills and 11 defensive digs. Justin Duff was next with 14 kills and nine blocks. Winnipeg evened up the series on Saturday with a dramatic 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-10) win. Andrew Town led the attack with 19 kills. Justin Duff had 13 kills and eight blocks. Paul Kjos finished with 13 kills and five blocks and Alan Ahow had 10 kills and a match high 13 digs. On Sunday Andrew Town had a career high 30 kills to lead the Wesmen to a 3-2 (29-31, 26-24, 25-22, 24-26, 15-9) series ending win. Justin Duff had 18 kills and seven blocks, Alan Ahow had a strong match with 17 kills and a team leading 12 digs. Setter Dan Lother had 68 set assists, eight digs and three blocks. Winnipeg will travel to Edmonton for the Canada West Final Four Championship starting on Friday night. The Wesmen will take on Alberta in the opening match. Match time is 7:30 p.m. (Wpg Time). The team will travel back to Edmonton the following week for the CIS Men's Volleyball Championship.
