Christie Nairn, women’s volleyball - Nairn was one of the best Wesmen players at this past weekend’s University of Regina Invitational Tournament. Nairn, a second year left side was steady and consistent in the three day tournament. The highlight of the weekend was a 15 kill performance against Alberta on Saturday.

Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge Begins Thursday……….
The 2008 “Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge” will take place at the Duckworth Centre from October 2 - 5, 2008. Women’s teams from Winnipeg, Guelph, Manitoba, Toronto, Regina and Sherbrooke will take part in the four day tournament. As an added feature the men’s volleyball team will take on the Manitoba Bisons in an exhibition match on Thu, Oct 2 at 7:00 p.m. Complete draw and results will be available at www.wesmen.ca
Pembina Chrysler Basketball Coache’s Clinic Announced……
The University of Winnipeg and Pembina Chrysler present the 22st Annual Wesmen Basketball Coaches Clinic on Saturday October 25. The cost of the clinic is $75.00 and includes seven clinic presentations, a Wesmen Athletic season pass and lunch (Saturday). MEN’S BASKETBALL
The men's basketball team challenged former Wesmen greats in the Alumni Challenge game last Thursday night. The team made up of former greats such as Suk Singh, Matt Opalko, Norm Froemel and many others defeated the Wesmen 65-59. Norm Froemel led the Alumni team with a game high 18 points, Mike James led the Wesmen with 11 points. The Wesmen will continue to practice and prepare for their first pre season action against Canada West opponents in the University of Manitoba Invitational Tournament on October 17 and 18.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The women's team took part in the Alumni Challenge last Thursday night and defeated the Wesmen Alumni 66-64. The Wesmen were led in scoring by last season's Canada West Rookie of the Year Amy Ogidan's game high 25 points. Former Wesmen great Uzo Asagwara led the Alumni team with 18 points. The team will head on the road to Regina this weekend to take part in the three day University of Regina Invitational Tournament. The team will take on Regina on Friday night followed by games against Brandon (Saturday) and Lethbridge (Sunday).
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The women's team had a busy week. The team took part in the Alumni Challenge against former players such as Nicola Dirks, Andrea Charbonneau, Jayme Menzies and Shanti Plett. The Wesmen defeated the Alumni squad 2-1. The team than hit the road to Regina to take part in the three day University of Regina Invitational Tournament. The team lost both of their matches on the opening day, losing 3-1 to Brandon (23-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-16) in the early match and in the evening match dropping a 3-0 decision to Calgary (26-24, 25-23, 25-15). On Saturday the team lost their final preliminary match 3-1 to Alberta (23-25, 25-7, 25-19, 25-18) and relegated to the B side of the tournament. In the semi final round that same evening the team was defeated 3-0 by Saskatchewan (26-24, 25-16, 25-23). On Sunday the team took on Simon Fraser in the seventh place match and fell short in a 3-0 (25-16, 30-28, 25-16) loss to the Clan. The team will now prepare to host the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge that will take place from Thursday to Sunday at the Duckworth Centre.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The men's team hit the court this past Thursday night in the Alumni Challenge. Former greats such as Ben Schellenberg, Dustin Addison -Schneider, Jarrod Small defeated the current Wesmen team 2-1. The team will continue to practice this week and prepare for an exhibition match against the Manitoba Bisons on Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.The team will head to Brandon to participate in the U niversity of Brandon Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Winnipeg plays Manitoba and Saskatchewan on Friday and will face Regina and Brandon on Saturday.
