WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Catie Gooch, women’s basketball - Catie had an outstanding weekend in leading the Wesmen to victories against Lethbridge and Calgary. Gooch, a third year guard scored 31 points (15.5 ppg), including five-three pointers, grabbed 11 rebounds (5.5 rpg), dished out nine assists (4.5 apg), and was solid on the defensive side of the ball with eight steals (4.0 spg). In Saturday’s 63-58 victory over Calgary, Gooch was stellar with 20 points, four –three pointers, seven assists, and four steals.

Nick Lother, men’s basketball – Nick played a big part in helping the Wesmen to a regular season opening split this past weekend. Lother, a third year guard scored 36 points (18.0 ppg), drained four-three pointers, was a force under the glass with 18 rebounds (9.0 rpg) and was a playmaker finishing with nine assists (4.5 apg). In Saturday’s big 82-68 win over Calgary, Lother finished the game with a team high 22 points, including four-three pointers, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic Fast Approaching…
Calling all basketball coaches….The Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic will be taking place on Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Duckworth Centre. The clinic begins at 9:00 a.m. and includes eight clinic presentations, a Wesmen Athletics season pass and lunch. Ben Schellenberg Receives CIS Top Eight Academic All-Canadian Honour….
Men’s Volleyball star Ben Schellenberg was honored this past week as the Canada West Universities Athletic Association male student-athlete recipient of the Desjardins CIS Top Eight Academic All-Canadian. A five-time CIS Academic All-Canadian, Schellenberg graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in Psychology in June after posting a final grade point average of 4.39 for the 2007-08 academic year. He received the school's O.T. Anderson Award for distinguished academic and extra curricular performance.


WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

The Winnipeg School Safety Patrols and the Winnipeg Police School Education Unit were special guests of the Wesmen at this past Saturday’s game against Calgary. The Wesmen acknowledged the efforts of the patrols and the police for keeping the children of Winnipeg safe.


WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team continued their fine play with two regular season opening victories this past weekend at the Duckworth Centre. On Friday night the Wesmen beat the Lethbridge Pronghorns 58-40. Amy Ogidan led the team with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Catie Gooch finished with 11 points, two assists and four steals. Winnipeg made it a perfect weekend on Saturday night beating the Calgary Dinos 63-58. Catie Gooch and Amy Ogidan each scored a game high 20 points. Jessica Stromberg had a strong game finishing with a double-double 16 points, 16 rebounds. Winnipeg will head to Regina later in the week to take on the Regina Cougars on Friday and Saturday. Game time both nights is 6:15 p.m.


MEN’S BASKETBALL

The men’s team opened up the regular season with a home weekend split against Lethbridge and Calgary. Against Lethbridge on Friday night the Wesmen dropped an 81-67 decision to the Pronghorns. Nick Lother led the Wesmen with 14 points, four assists. James Horaska and Mike James added 10 points a piece. The team rebounded on Saturday night with an impressive 82-68 victory over the tough Calgary Dinos. Nick Lother had a solid game scoring a team high 22 points, including four three pointers. Mike James scored 20 points. The team will travel to Regina to take on their division rivals, the Regina Cougars on Friday and Saturday night. Tip off is 8:00 p.m. both nights.


MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The men’s team will open up their 2008-09 Canada West regular season schedule this Friday and Saturday night against the Regina Cougars. Larry McKay and his team had the opening week bye in the Canada West schedule and are chomping at the bit to hit the court to begin the regular season. Match time on Friday is 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Diane Scott and her squad will open up the 2008-09 Canada West regular season at home this weekend against the Regina Cougars. The team has had the past two weeks off from match action and have been preparing for the start of the regular season. Match time on Friday night is 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
