WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Peter Lomuro, men’s basketball – Peter scored 36 points (18.0 ppg) and added five assists, six steals in the team’s two exhibition games against McMaster and Brock at this past weekend’s University of Manitoba Invitational Tournament. In Friday’s game against McMaster, Lomuro scored a team high 20 points.

Jessica Stromberg, women’s basketball – Jessica averaged 12.0 points per game, seven rebounds and two steals in helping the Wesmen win three consecutive preseason games against the University of New Brunswick this past weekend.

WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

This past Saturday afternoon members of the Wesmen family conducted a basketball clinic for approximately 35 children from the Rossbrook House. The clinic took place at the Victoria Albert Elementary School. A special thank you to Jayme Menzies, Tolu Ilelaboye, Kristine Zatorsky, Lindsay DeLeeuw and Diego Contador who did a great job running the clinic.

The Winnipeg School Safety Patrols and the Winnipeg Police Service will be special guests of the Wesmen at this Friday’s Basketball game against Lethbridge. The Wesmen will acknowledge the efforts of the patrols and the police for keeping the children of Winnipeg safe.

2008-09 Canada West Regular Season Begins This Friday….
The 2008-09 Canada West Regular Season will begin this Friday night as part of the Pembina Chrysler Weekend. The Wesmen basketball teams are in action against the Lethbridge Pronghorns at the Duckworth Centre. The action begins at 6:00 p.m. with the women’s game followed by the men’s game at 8:00 p.m. The men’s game will carried live on 1290 CFRW with Paul Edmonds providing the play by play and Steve Thompson adding the color commentary.

Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic Coming up…
Calling all basketball coaches….The Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic will be taking place on Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Duckworth Centre. The clinic begins at 9:00 a.m. and includes eight clinic presentations, a Wesmen Athletics season pass and lunch. MEN’S BASKETBALL

The men’s team wrapped up their 2008-09 pre-season schedule this past weekend at the University of Manitoba Invitational. In Friday’s opening game against McMaster, the Wesmen were defeated 86-71. Peter Lomuro led the team with 20 points. Nick Lother scored 15 points and Mike James added 12 points. On Saturday the team played better and fell just short in a 75-73 loss to Brock. Eric Zimmerman led the Wesmen in scoring with 19 points, including a pair of three pointers. Peter Lomuro added 16 points, three assists and five steals. Winnipeg will now prepare for their first Canada West Regular Season game coming up this Friday at the Duckworth Centre against Lethbridge at 8:00 p.m. The game will be carried live on 1290 CFRW with Paul Edmonds providing the play by play and Steve Thompson adding the color commentary. Winnipeg will face the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The women’s team concluded their pre-season schedule in New Brunswick for a three game series against the University of New Brunswick varsity Reds. The team came away from the weekend series with three straight wins. In Thursday’s opening game Winnipeg defeated UNB 77-59. Caity Gooch and Amy Ogidan led the Wesmen with 15 points each. On Friday night the Wesmen made it two wins in a row. Amy Ogidan scored a game high 29 points to lead the team to a 70-59 victory. Jessica Stromberg had a great game at both ends of the court scoring 12 points and adding 10 rebounds. On Saturday the Wesmen wrapped up their pre-season schedule with a 64-60 win. MacKenzie Prasek led the team with 14 points. Jessica Stromberg hauled in eight rebounds. The team finishes a highly successful preseason with a record of 9-1. Tanya McKay and her team will now head home and prepare for the beginning of the 2008-09 Canada West Regular Season. The Wesmen will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night followed by a visit by the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night. Game times both nights is 6:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The men’s team finished up their 2008-09 pre-season schedule with a five match trip to Ontario. In Wednesday’s opening match, the Wesmen were victorious beating Toronto 3-2 (25-23, 25-18, 25-16, 25-27, 8-15). Winnipeg won the first three sets and soon afterwards both coaches decided to play two more sets. Paul Kjos led the team with 11 kills. Justin Duff had a solid match in the middle with five blocks. On Thursday Winnipeg headed to Guelph for a two match series against the Gryphons. In the opening match the Gryphons defeated the Wesmen 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 22-25, 25-19, 15-9). First year player Chad Rempel led the team with 10 kills. In the second match of the series, Friday night both teams put up a battle. The Gryphons defeated the Wesmen 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 28-26). Middle blockers Danny Andres and Maurice Williams were impressive leading the team with 15 and 13 kills respectively. The team moved on to Hamilton to face McMaster for two matches on Saturday and Sunday. In the opening match the Marauders came away with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) win. Paul Kjos led the team with 12 kills and three blocks. Danny Andres had a solid match with nine kills and no attack errors. The Wesmen completed their pre-season schedule on a winning note Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 (25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19) win over the Marauders. Justin Duff led Winnipeg with 15 kills land three blocks. Winnipeg will have the bye this coming week and will prepare to host the Regina Cougars on Fri. Oct. 31 and Sat.Nov.1 to kick off their 2008-09 Canada West Regular Season.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The 2008-09 Canada West regular season began this past weekend for women’s volleyball. Head Coach and her team have the bye for the first two weeks of the regular season. The team will continue to practice hard in preparation for their regular season opening matches against the Regina Cougars on Fri. Oct. 31 and Sat. Nov.1 at the Duckworth Centre.
