WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Paul Kjos, men’s volleyball – Kjos, a fifth year left side led the Wesmen with 10 kills in an exhibition match against the Manitoba Bisons on October 9th.

Amy Ogidan, women’s basketball – Ogidan was named MVP of this past weekend’s BOB FM Shootout. The second year guard helped the Wesmen record a perfect 3-0 record. Ogidan scored 50 points (16.2 ppg) in the three games.


WESMEN COMMUNITY NEWS

Coming up on Saturday, October 18th, members of the Wesmen Basketball Teams will be conducting player clinics at the Victoria Albert School. The clinic will be attended by several neighborhood children from Rossbrook House and several other neighborhood organizations.

The Winnipeg Wesmen presented a cheque for $1000.00 to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation at this past weekend’s BOB FM Shootout. Proceeds from the three day tournament went to the foundation.

Pembina Chrysler Basketball Coaches Clinic Announced……
The University of Winnipeg and Pembina Chrysler present the 22nd Annual Wesmen Basketball Coaches Clinic on Saturday October 25. The cost of the clinic is $75.00 and includes seven clinic presentations, a Wesmen Athletic season pass and lunch (Saturday). Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic Coming Soon…..
Calling all basketball coaches….The Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic will be taking place on Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Duckworth Centre. The clinic begins at 9:00 a.m. and includes eight clinic presentations, a Wesmen Athletics season pass and lunch. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team finished the 2008 BOB FM Shootout with a perfect 3-0 record during the three day tournament. The Wesmen were victorious in their opening game Friday night beating Royal Millitary College 63-33. Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with 18 points, Jessica Stromberg added 16 points. On Saturday Winnipeg improved to 2-0 with a 59-56 victory over Fraser Valley. Ogidan was superb scoring a game high 24 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. On Sunday Winnipeg came from behind to defeat the Brandon Bobcats 54-52. Jessica Stromberg led Winnipeg with a game high 21 points, including three-three pointers. Randie Gibson scored 10 points I the victory. Ogidan was selected as the tournament MVP and Stromberg and Gibson were selected as tournament all-stars. The team will head out to New Brunswick for a three game exhibition series against the University of New Brunswick starting on Thursday night.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Dave Crook and his team will make their 2008/09 pre-season debut this week at the University of Manitoba Invitational Tournament. The Wesmen will open the two day tournament o Friday afternoon against McMaster (4:00 p.m.) and conclude the tournament against Brock on Saturday afternoon (3:30 p.m).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The women’s team, coached by Diane Scott took part in the Saskatchewan Cup in Saskatoon this past weekend. The team finished the three day tournament in fifth place. Winnipeg had a tough opening day on Friday losing a pair of matches, 3-0 to Brandon (25-10, 25-20, 25-13) and 3-0 to Regina (25-16, 25-5, 25-20). Ariel Smith led Winnipeg in the opening match with nine kills. In Saturday’s quarterfinal round the Wesmen dropped a 3-2 (19-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-9) match to Thompson Rivers. Ariel Smith led the team with 18 kills and 12 digs, Marlee Bragg added 11 kills. Winnipeg hit the win column on Sunday morning in the fifth place match beating the host Saskatchewan Huskies 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-19). Smith and Bragg led the Wesmen with 21 and 14 kills respectively. Lauren Sears added nine kills and six blocks. Winnipeg will now prepare to open up the 2008/09 Canada West regular season on Oct 31 and Nov. 1 when the Wesmen host the Regina Cougars.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Larry McKay and his team ventured across town to take on the Manitoba Bisons last Thursday night in a preseason match. The Bisons defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-17, 25-20). Fifth year left side Paul Kjos led the team with 10 kills. Justin Duff had six blocks and Andrew Tow had three service aces. The team will wrap up their pre-season schedule with a five match series in Ontario. Winnipeg will play Toronto on Wednesday, followed by a two match series on Thursday and Friday against Guelph. The tour ends with two matches on Saturday and Sunday against McMaster.
