WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Jessica Stromberg, women’s basketball – Jessica earns her second player of the week award for her play in helping the Wesmen to a weekend split in Regina. Stromberg finished the two game series with 26 points (13.0 ppg), including four-three pointers, 16 rebounds (8.0 rpg), and three steals and averaging 35.5 minutes per game. Stromberg led the team in Friday’s opening game with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Andrew Town, men’s volleyball – Andrew, a fourth year outside played a big part in helping the Wesmen earn a pair of victories against Regina. Town finished the two matches with 34 kills (17.0 kpg), nine defensive digs (4.5 dpg), and two service aces. Town led the Wesmen in Saturday’s five set victory with a match high 21 kills.
WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
A number of Wesmen student-athletes are spending their free time volunteering in the community a few examples are:
Adam Dobriansky, (men’s basketball) – is conducting weekly basketball clinics for children at the Victoria Albert School.
Alex MacIver (women’s basketball) – is currently a volunteer coach at Brooklands School.
At this past Saturday’s volleyball match, the Wesmen welcomed several teams who were in attendance for the annual"Volleyball Uniform Giveaway Night". Congratulations to the Steinbach Sabres who won a set of volleyball uniforms compliments of Saxon Athletics, Winnipeg Outfitters and the University of Winnipeg
The International Basketball Classic will be taking place at the Duckworth Centre on December 5th - December 7th, 2008. This tournament is open to all grades 3-12 club teams across Canada and the United States. Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic This Friday, Space Still Available…..
The Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic will be taking place this Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Duckworth Centre. The clinic begins at 9:00 a.m. and includes eight clinic presentations, a Wesmen Athletics season pass and lunch. 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge Saturday, November 15th…..
It is that time of the year again, Saturday November 15th the 18th annual Duckworth Challenge will take place at the University of Winnipeg. The men’s and women’s basketball teams will battle their cross town rivals, the Manitoba Bisons. Once again fans can get their Bisons BBQ’ed, as Bison Burgers will be served hot off the grill from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m as you enter the Duckworth Centre. The volleyball portion of the competition will take place on Thursday, February 5th at the University of Manitoba.
*Please note that due to the Annual Santa Claus Parade, fans are encouraged to arrive at the Duckworth Centre early to avoid the heavy traffic and street closures around the downtown area.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The men’s team opened up the 2008-09 Canada West regular season with a pair of wins against the Regina Cougars at the Duckworth Centre. In Friday’s match the Wesmen defeated Regina 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 18-25, 25-21). Alan Ahow led the team with 15 kills, followed by Andrew Town with 12. The Wesmen made it two in a row on Saturday night pulling out a tough 3-2 (25-17, 19-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-11) victory. Andrew Town was impressive leading the team with a match high 21 kills. Middle blocker Justin Duff finished with 11 kills and three blocks. The team will be on the road for a pair of matches against the Saskatchewan Huskies (0-4) starting Friday night in Saskatoon and concluding on Saturday night. Match time both nights is 8:00 p.m.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The women’s team began their 2008-09 Canada West regular season at home against the Regina Cougars. In Friday’s opening match the Cougars defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 29-27). First year player Ariel Smith was a bright spot for the Wesmen leading the team with 11 kills and 13 defensive digs. On Saturday, Regina recorded their second victory defeating Winnipeg 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-21). Marlee Bragg led the team with six kills, 11 defensive digs and two blocks. The team will be on the road this weekend for a pair of matches against the Saskatchewan Huskies (0-4).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Dave Crook and his team hit the road for a pair of games in Regina against the Cougars. On Friday night the Cougars opened up the weekend series with a 91-61 victory over the Wesmen. Mike James led the team with 12 points, followed by Nick Lother with 11 points, including three-three pointers. The team played a better game on Saturday night but were defeated 82-69. Nick Lother scored a game high 27 points to lead Winnipeg. Peter Lomuro and Mike James finished with 15 points. Winnipeg (1-3) will host Fraser Valley (3-1) on Friday night and Thompson Rivers (1-3) on Saturday. Game time both nights is 8:00 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The women’s team was in Regina for a pair of games against their divisional rivals the Regina Cougars. The Cougars opened up the weekend series with a 68-52 victory on Friday night. Jessica Stromberg led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds. Amy Ogidan was next in scoring with 12 points. The Wesmen gained a split of the two games on Saturday night, defeating the Cougars 67-61. Amy Ogidan scored a game high 21 points. Jessica Stromberg continued her strong play finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds. The team will host Fraser Valley (2-2) on Friday night and Thompson Rivers (2-2) on Saturday night. Tip off both nights is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
