WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Lauren Sears, women’s volleyball - Lauren, a second year middle played a big part in helping the Wesmen earn a split against the Saskatchewan Huskies. Sears finished the two matches with 15 kills, five blocks, three defensive digs and one service ace. On Friday night, Sears finished with nine kills, three digs to help the Wesmen earn a 3-2 come from behind victory for their first win of the regular season.
Nick Lother, men’s basketball - Nick, a player of the week winner for the second time this season was at his best this past weekend. The second year guard scored 53 points (26.1 ppg), 18 assists (9.0 apg), four steals (2.0 spg) in games against Thompson Rivers and Fraser Valley. In Saturday’s game against Thompson Rivers, Lother was on fire scoring 35 points, adding nine assists and two steals. Lother is currently fifth in Canada West scoring (21.2 ppg) and third in assists (5.2 apg).

18TH Annual Duckworth Challenge This Saturday Night……….
It is that time of the year again, the 18th annual Duckworth Challenge will take place at the University of Winnipeg on Saturday, November 15th. The men’s and women’s basketball teams will battle their cross town rivals, the Manitoba Bisons. Once again fans can get their Bisons BBQ’ed, as Bison Burgers will be served hot off the grill from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m as you enter the Duckworth Centre. The action begins at 6:00 p.m. with the women's game followed by the men's game at 8:00 p.m. The volleyball portion of the competition will take place on Thursday, February 5th at the University of Manitoba.
*Please note that due to the Annual Santa Claus Parade, fans are encouraged to arrive at the Duckworth Centre early to avoid the heavy traffic and street closures around the downtown area.
Jill Mathez Inducted Into Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame………..
A special congratulation to former Wesmen basketball player Jill Mathez on her induction this past Saturday night into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.
WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
This past Friday night’s basketball game was WMBA Night, the crowd was filled with hundreds of WMBA teams from across Winnipeg and the surrounding areas.
The University of Winnipeg Women's Basketball Program will be conducting a special basketball clamp on Tuesday November 11 at the Duckworth Centre. Boys or girls in grades 5-12 can refresh their basketball memory - work on ball handling, footwork, shooting form, Defense and ‘1 on 1’ offensive skills to get you ready for your upcoming school try-outs and season. The International Basketball Classic will be taking place at the Duckworth Centre on December 5th - December 7th, 2008. This tournament is open to all grades 3-12 club teams across Canada and the United States. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The women’s team improved their regular season record to 5-1 with a pair of victories this past weekend at the Duckworth Centre. Friday night the Wesmen were impressive defeating Fraser Valley 77-52. Caity Gooch led Winnipeg with 16 points (four-three pointers), six assists and three steals. Randie Gibson scored 15 points (four-three pointers). Alex MacIver completed the game with a double-double 10 points, 12 rebounds. On Saturday Winnipeg defeated Thompson Rivers 53-44. Alex MacIver led Winnipeg in scoring with 13 points to go along with 10 rebounds. MacKenzie Prasek scored 11 points including a pair of three pointers. Winnipeg (5-1) will next see action on Thursday night at the University of Manitoba in the first game of a home and home series against the Manitoba Bisons. The action returns to the Duckworth Centre next Saturday for the basketball portion of the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Dave Crook and his team had a tough weekend dropping both games on home court. On Friday night Fraser Valley defeated the Wesmen 62-58. Nick Lother led the team with 18 points and nine assists. Christopher Jordan scored 10 points. On Saturday night the Wesmen lost a 99-95 slugfest against Thompson Rivers. Nick Lother was on fire scoring a career high 35 points for the Wesmen. Peter Lomuro scored 22 points in the loss. Winnipeg's record sits at 1-5. Winnipeg will have two big divisional games this week against the Manitoba Bisons starting Thursday night at the U of M and heading back to the Duckworth Centre next Saturday night for the basketball portion of the 18th Annual Duckworth Challenge.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The men’s team improved their regular season record to 4-0 with a pair of victories on the road against the Saskatchewan Huskies. In Friday’s opening match Winnipeg defeated the Huskies 3-1 ( 21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-20). The duo of Andrew Town and Justin Duff led the Wesmen on this night. Town finished with a match high 16 kills and led the team with six defensive digs. Duff was outstanding finishing with 13 kills in 19 attempts (0.579 attack percentage) to go along with four blocks. The Wesmen (4-0) will continue on the road next week with a two match series against Trinity Western (3-1) in Langley British Columbia.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The women’s team was on the road for a two match series against the Saskatchewan Huskies. On Friday night the Wesmen earned their first win of the regular season, overcoming a 0-2 deficit to defeat the Huskies 3-2 (19-25, 15-25, 25-17, 25-18, 15-13). First year player Ariel Smith continued her impressive play leading the Wesmen with 11 kills. Marlee Bragg was strong with 10 kills, followed by Lauren Sears with nine kills. On Saturday the Wesmen were swept 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-17). Marlee Bragg led Winnipeg with 11 kills and two service aces. Middle blocker Lauren Sears contributed four blocks. Devyn DeGagne led the Wesmen with 12 defensive digs. Winnipeg (1-3) will take on Trinity Western (1-3) for a pair of matches starting Friday night and concluding on Saturday night in Langley, British Columbia.
