LEA MARC PRINTING WESMEN ATHLETES OF THE MONTH (February)

Ben Schellenberg, men’s volleyball – Ben, in his fifth year was named the Canada West Men’s Volleyball MVP, a first team Canada West All-Star and was recently named the CIS Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year and first team All-Canadian. Schellenberg, a 6’6” opposite/middle captained the Wesmen to a silver medal at the CIS Men’s Volleyball Championships in Laval, Quebec. Ben’s outstanding play earned him a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

Amy Ogidan, women’s basketball – Amy, a first year guard was recently named the Canada West Rookie of the Year. Ogidan led the Wesmen to a 2-1 series win in the Great Plains Division semi-final against Manitoba where she scored 49 points and grabbed 29 rebounds against the Bisons. Ogidan scored 36 points in the Great Plains Final against Regina. Amy was named back to back Wesmen Female Player of the Week for the periods ending (Feb 11-17 and Feb 18-24).

WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Ben Schellenberg, men’s volleyball  - Ben was named the CIS Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year and a tournament all-star at the CIS Men’s Volleyball Championships in Laval, Quebec. Ben registered 56 kills (18.7 kpg), 16 digs (5.3 dpg) and nine blocks (3.0 bpg) in the team’s three matches. Schellenberg was named the Wesmen Player of the Match in all three matches.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

The annual Wesmen Athletics Awards Banquet will be taking place on Thursday March 20th at the Radisson Hotel. Tickets are $25.00 each and will be available later this week at the Duckworth Customer Service Centre. For more information please call 786-9349.

The 2008 Wesmen Summer Sports Camps will once again be taking place at the Duckworth Centre in July and August. Please log onto www.wesmen.ca for all the camp information and also to register on-line. For further information please call 786-9418.

The 2008 JV Basketball Championships will take place on Mon. March 10th and the  AAAA High School Basketball Championships will be taking place at the Duckworth Centre from Thu. March 13 – Sat. March 15, 2008. Ticket and more information will soon be available.

POW WOW 2008 will be held at the Duckworth Centre on Friday, March 7th. Activities will be on going thru most of the day.

WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

The Winnipeg Wesmen will be hosting the Manitoba Public Insurance Basketball Clinic on Friday March 28 at the Duckworth Centre. The clinic will be led by 10 Wesmen Basketball Team members (5 men, 5 women). Participants from local junior high schools will be in attendance.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Winnipeg Wesmen Men’s Volleyball Team won the silver medal at the CIS Men’s Volleyball National Championships at Laval, Quebec. The Wesmen played a great final match but were defeated 3-1 (25-17, 23-25,25-23,25-20) by the top ranked Alberta Golden Bears in the gold medal match. Fifth year players Ben Schellenberg and Dustin Addison-Schneider were named to the tournament all-star team. Schellenberg led Winnipeg with 24 kills and Addison-Schneider had 47 assists and three blocks in both fifth year players final match with the Wesmen. The Wesmen started the championship on Friday night with a 3-1 (22-25, 25-11, 25-23, 25-22) victory over the number two ranked McMaster in the quarter finals. Schellenberg led Winnipeg with 18 kills followed by Andrew Town with 13 kills. Ryan DeBruyn was impressive with 11 kills and an attack percentage of .833. In Saturday’s semi final, Winnipeg earned a spot in the gold medal match with a 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-16) sweep against Dalhousie. Schellenberg led Winnipeg with 14 kills. Jon Kasdorf had a great match at libero with 15 digs. Schellenberg was named the CIS Player of the Year and First Team All-Canadian and Dustin Addison-Schneider was also named a First Team All-Canadian.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

First year middle Lauren Sears was named to the CIS Women’s Volleyball All-Rookie Team at the CIS Women’s Volleyball Championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Fifth year guard Erfan Nasajpour was named to the Canada West First All-Star Team earlier this week. Fellow fifth year player Matt Opalko was named the Canada West nominee for the Ken Shield Award which reward excellence in the student-athlete. The recipient exhibits outstanding achievement in three areas: basketball, academics and community involvement.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

First year guard Amy Ogidan was named the Canada West Rookie of the Year and Catie Gooch was named to the Canada West Second All-Star Team. Jessica Stromberg was named the Canada West nominee for the Tracy MacLeod Award for the player who best demonstrates exceptional courage in overcoming adversity.
