WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Randie Gibson, women’s basketball – Randie, a third year guard from Regina had her best game of the season this past Saturday night against Regina. Gibson, scored a game high 17 points, including three-three pointers, hauled in five rebounds, dished out four assists and was stellar on defense with three steals.
Erfan Nasajpour, men’s basketball – Erfan, earns his third player of the week award of the season after leading his team to an impressive 79-54 victory over Regina on Saturday night. Nasajpour scored a game high 31 points, including seven-three pointers, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out six assists and had four steals. Nasajpour currently leads the Canada West Conference in scoring with 22.5 point per game.
GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
The Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters held their annual dinner and awards night last evening. The defending CIS National Champions, the 2006-07 Men’s Volleyball Team were finalists for Team of the Year and Men’s Basketball Player Erfan Nasajpour was a finalist in the Male Athlete of the Year. The Wesmen did not walk away with any awards but the entire University of Winnipeg Wesmen organization is extremely proud of their accomplishments this past year.
Attention all Wesmen fans….how does a trip to Las Vegas sound, well it is possible. The Winnipeg Wesmen in conjunction with Out n’ About Travel is giving away a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Draw ballots are available at all Wesmen home games/matches. Each ballot cost $2.00 with all proceeds going towards the University of Winnipeg’s Athletic Scholarship Fund. The draw will be made at the Sat, Feb. 9th basketball game vs Brandon. All entries must be in attendance to win.
The 2008 Wesmen Summer Sports Camps will once again be taking place at the Duckworth Centre in July and August. Information and on line registration will soon be available on www.wesmen.ca
WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY
This past Friday night was Aboriginal Night and on Saturday night was WMBA Night at the Duckworth Centre. Thanks to all those children and parents who were in attendance.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Men’s Team was host to the Regina Cougars for two important division games. On Friday night the Cougars got off to a great start and never looked back defeating the Wesmen 79-67. Dan Shynkaryk led Winnipeg with 15 points and eight rebounds. Erfan Nasajpour scored 12 points to go along with six assists and Peter Lomuro finished with 11 points. Winnipeg came back the next night in a big way defeating Regina 79-54. Erfan Nasajpour led the charge with a game high 31 points, including seven-three pointers. Matt Opalko had a strong game finishing with 19 points. Winnipeg now stands with a record of 9-9 and tied with Regina for second spot in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen will be on the road to Alberta this weekend to take on Lethbridge (1-17) on Friday and heading to Calgary on Saturday to take on the Dinos (15-3).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Tanya McKay and her squad had a tough weekend dropping both games to the Regina Cougars. In Friday’s game the Cougars defeated the Wesmen 72-50. Alex MacIver led Winnipeg with 11 points. Jessica Stromberg had nine points and 11 rebounds. On Saturday, the Wesmen got off to a great start but struggled in the second half in a 65-55 loss. Randie Gibson led Winnipeg with 17 points, including a trio of three pointers and four assists. Dawna Wright scored 11 points and hauled in seven rebounds. Winnipeg sits with a record of 8-10 and in a tie for second place with Manitoba in the Great Plains Division. The team will head out on the road for weekend games against Lethbridge (3-15) on Friday and Calgary (13-5) on Saturday.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Head Coach Larry McKay and his team kept up their winning ways in Regina this past weekend. In Friday’s match the Wesmen swept the Cougars 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-18). Alan Ahow led the Wesmen with a match high 13 kills and an impressive attack percentage of .750. Andrew Town finished with seven kills. Ben Schellenberg totaled seven kills and was in on five blocks. Winnipeg completed the sweep on Saturday with another 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-21) victory. Alan Ahow led Winnipeg with a match high nine kills followed by Paul Kjos with eight kills. Winnipeg presently has a record of 12-2 and in a three way tie for first place in the tough Canada West Conference standings. Winnipeg will host the Calgary Dinos (7-7) on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Match time both nights is 7:00 p.m.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Women’s team traveled to Regina for a weekend series against the Cougars. On Friday night the Cougars swept the Wesmen 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-17). Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with seven kills, followed by Marlee Bragg’s six kills. Karen Montgomery and Shanti Plett each had a match high nine defensive digs. On Saturday, the team played better but lost in four sets 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-14, 25-18). Nicola Dirks led the team with 11 kills. First year middle Lauren Sears had 10 kills and four blocks. Libero Shanti Plett had a match high 17 defensive digs. Winnipeg’s record is now 4-14 on the regular season. The team will have the bye this week and will prepare for a home and home series against Brandon starting on Feb 7th at the Duckworth Centre.
