WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Marlee Bragg, women’s volleyball – Marlee, a third year left side, had her best weekend since recovering from a serious knee injury that occurred last season. Bragg was instrumental in helping the Wesmen to a two match sweep against the Saskatchewan Huskies. Marlee finished the weekend series with 17 kills, 16 digs and two blocks. She saved her best for Saturday night finishing with 11 kills and 10 defensive digs.
Michael Passley, men’s basketball – Michael, a 6’0” wing from Toronto, Ontario was one of the hardest working players in helping the Wesmen to a weekend split against Fraser Valley and Thompson Rivers. In Saturday’s victory over Thompson Rivers, Passley made his first ever CIS start and he did not disappoint finishing with eight points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals.
GENERAL WESMEN NEWS
On Sunday, January 27th the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters will hold their annual awards ceremony and dinner. This year the Winnipeg Wesmen will have a part in the festivities. The 2006-07 Men’s Volleyball Team that won it’s 10th CIS Championship last March is a finalists in the Team of the Year category. Also nominated for an award is Men’s Basketball player Erfan Nasajpour, who is a finalist in the Male Athlete of the Year category. Tickets are available by contacting Ken Kobelka. Attention all Wesmen fans….how does a trip to Las Vegas sound, well it is possible. The Winnipeg Wesmen in conjunction with Out n’ About Travel is giving away a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Draw ballots are available at all Wesmen home games/matches. Each ballot cost $2.00 with all proceeds going towards the University of Winnipeg’s Athletic Scholarship Fund. The draw will be made at the Sat, Feb. 9th basketball game vs Brandon. All entries must be in attendance to win.
1290 CFRW will be broadcasting both Men’s Basketball games this weekend against the Regina Cougars. The action starts at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, with Paul Edmonds, providing the play by play and Steve Thompson adding the color commentary.
The 2008 Wesmen Summer Sports Camps will once again be taking place at the Duckworth Centre in July and August. Information and on line registration will soon be available on www.wesmen.ca
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The Men’s Volleyball Team had a successful weekend winning both matches against the Saskatchewan Huskies. In Friday nights match the number two ranked Wesmen defeated the Huskies 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-20). Paul Kjos led the way with 10 kills. Andrew Town followed with seven kills and two blocks. On Saturday night Winnipeg completed the weekend sweep with a hard fought 3-1 (28-26, 28-26, 22-25, 25-23) win.
Alan Ahow led Winnipeg with a match high 19 kills. Andrew Town was solid with 18 kills and 10 defensive digs. Ben Schellenberg had 14 kills and seven blocks. The two victories leave Winnipeg with a record of 10-2, and in second place in the tough Canada West Conference standings. The Wesmen will be on the road to Regina this weekend to take on the Regina Cougars (1-13) on Friday and Saturday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Head Coach Diane Scott and her team got back in the win column with a pair of impressive victories over the Saskatchewan Huskies. Winnipeg defeated the Huskies 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-13) in Friday’s opening match. Nicola Dirks led Winnipeg with a match high 17 kills and an attack percentage of .607. Libero Shanti Plett finished with a match high 14 defensive digs. On Saturday, the Wesmen completed the sweep with another 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16) victory. The "dynamic duo" of Nicola Dirks and Marlee Bragg led the Wesmen charge. Dirks led with 12 kills, 12 defensive digs and three blocks. Bragg finished with 11 kills and 10 defensive digs. Middle Dayna Kiesman continued her strong play finishing with five blocks. Winnipeg improves their record to 4-12 and will head to Regina this weekend to face the Regina Cougars (6-10).
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team came back from a tough British Columbia road trip with two impressive victories. On Friday night in Abbotsford, BC, the Wesmen pulled out a 60-56 win over Fraser Valley. First year guard and potential Canada West Rookie of the Year candidate Amy Ogidan scored a game high 16 points to lead the team. Randie Gibson scored 14 points, including seven in the final two minutes. The team traveled thru the night to Kamloops, BC and picked up an impressive 77-53 wins on Saturday night against Thompson Rivers. Ogidan led the Wesmen with a game high 19 points. Dawna Wright followed with 14 points and also added three steals. The Wesmen now sport a record of 8-8 and currently hold down second place in the Great Plains Division. Winnipeg will host the first place Regina Cougars (10-6) on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Men’s Basketball Team came back from British Columbia with a split in their two games. On Friday, Winnipeg was edged 90-86 in double overtime by Fraser Valley. Erfan Nasajpour played a total of 46 minutes scoring 28 points, grabbing nine rebounds and was stellar on defense with six steals. On Saturday the team rebounded with an impressive 99-88 victory over Thompson Rivers. Dan Shynkaryk led the Wesmen with 26 points. Nick Lother scored 21 points, including four-three pointers and added eight assists. Michael Passley, making his first ever CIS start scored eight points, hauled in 11 rebounds and dished out five assists and came away with three steals. Winnipeg now sits with an even 8-8 record and will host the Regina Cougars (8-8) in an important two game series beginning Friday night at 8:00 p.m. and concluding on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be carried live on 1290 CFRW.
