WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

catieCatie Gooch, women’s basketball – Catie earns her fourth Player of the Week award this season after scoring 31 points, dishing out 10 assists, coming away with three steals and draining six-three pointers in the teams two road games this past weekend. In Friday’s game against Lethbridge, Gooch scored 20 points with five assists, and three steals.

alanAlan Ahow, men’s volleyball – Alan, a fourth year outside played a big part in helping the number two ranked Wesmen to a two match sweep against Calgary. Ahow finished the weekend with 30 kills, 22 defensive digs and two blocks. On Saturday, Alan finished with a match high 21 kills to go along with 10 defensive digs.



GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

On Thu. Feb.7th  the Wesmen will honor fifth year volleyball players Nicola Dirks, Dustin Addison – Schneider and Ben Schellenberg. Two days later on Sat Feb.9th , fifth year Men’s Basketball players Erfan Nasajpour, Dan Shynkaryk, and Matt Opalko will be honored as each of these fine athletes will be playing in their last regular season home game/match as a Wesmen. Please plan to attend and show your appreciation for these athletes who have been a vital part of the Wesmen family.

This past weekend the University of Winnipeg started to provide live webcasts of the Men’s Volleyball matches against Calgary. This weeks volleyball matches on Thursday and the basketball games on Saturday will be carried live on http://www.uwinnipeg.tv with University of Winnipeg Director of Communications and Marketing Shawn Coates providing the play by play action.

Attention all Wesmen fans….how does a trip to Las Vegas sound, well it is possible. The Winnipeg Wesmen in conjunction with Out n’ About Travel is giving away a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Draw ballots are available at all Wesmen home games/matches. Each ballot cost $2.00 with all proceeds going towards the University of Winnipeg’s Athletic Scholarship Fund. The draw will be made at the Sat, Feb. 9th basketball game vs Brandon. All entries must be in attendance to win.

WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

The Winnipeg School Safety Patrols were special guests of the Wesmen at this Friday’s Volleyball match against Calgary. The Wesmen acknowledged the efforts of the patrols for keeping the children of Winnipeg safe.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The number two ranked team in the country had a successful weekend winning both matches against the Calgary Dinos. In Friday’s opening match in front of 1550 spectators at the Duckworth Centre,  Winnipeg came away with a 3-1 (25-18, 24-26, 25-21, 25-18) victory. Ben Schellenberg was a one man wrecking crew finishing with a match high 17 kills, 13 defensive digs, five blocks and three service aces. Paul Kjos finished with 13 kills and Alan Ahow had nine kills and 12 digs. On Saturday Winnipeg completed the sweep with another 3-1 (25-16, 25-15, 18-25, 25-23) win. Alan Ahow was superb finishing with a match high 21 kills and adding 10 defensive digs. Andrew Town led the Wesmen with 14 defensive digs to go along with his eight kills. Winnipeg now sits with a record of 14-2 tied with Alberta for top spot in the Canada West Conference standings. Winnipeg will wrap up the regular season with a home and home series against Brandon (8-8) starting Thursday in Winnipeg at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday in Brandon at 8:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The Women’s team had the bye this past week and was busy preparing for a big home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats to conclude the regular season. The Wesmen (4-14) have a chance to grab the last playoff spot in the Canada West Conference. The match on Thursday begins at 6:00 p.m. and on Saturday in Brandon match time is 8:00 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Dave Crook and his team traveled to Southern Alberta for a two game set against Lethbridge and Calgary. On Friday against Lethbridge Winnipeg dropped a close 83-79 decision to the Pronghorns. Erfan Nasajpour led the Wesmen with 14 points followed by Matt Opalko with 13 points and eight rebounds. On Saturday, an injury plagued Wesmen team fell 98-62 to the Calgary Dinos. Winnipeg was without fifth year starters Erfan Nasajpour and Dan Shynkaryk in the contest. Cam Hornby had his best game as a Wesmen leading the team with 17 points, including five-three pointers. Winnipeg’s record sits at 9-11 and the team remains tied with Regina for second place in the Great Plains Division. The Wesmen will wrap up the regular season with a home and home series against the Brandon Bobcats (18-2) on Thursday night in Brandon (8:00 p.m.) and Saturday night in Winnipeg at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Tanya McKay and her young team were on the road to Southern Alberta this past weekend. On Friday night in Lethbridge, Winnipeg was defeated 68-67 on a pair of last second free throws. Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with 20 points. Dawna Wright had 15 points and Amy Ogidan collected 10 points. On Saturday, Winnipeg played hard but fell 76-69 to the Calgary Dinos. Randie Gibson and Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with 12 points each. Catie Gooch was next with 11 points. Jessica Stromberg was a monster on the boards hauling in a game high 14 rebounds. Winnipeg’s record stands at 8-12 and tied with the Manitoba Bisons for second place in the Great Plains Division. The team will conclude the regular season with a home and home series against Brandon (0-20). The team will travel to Brandon on Thursday before playing on Saturday in Winnipeg.
