WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Amy Ogidan, women’s basketball – Amy, continued her impressive play in her first season of university level basketball. Ogidan scored 36 points, grabbed six rebounds, and was stellar on defense with six steals in the two games against Regina in the Great Plains Division Final.

Ben Schellenberg, men’s volleyball – The Canada West Men’s Volleyball MVP continued his fine play at the Canada West Final Four. Schellenberg had a combined 27 kills, 10 digs, four service aces and four blocks in the matches against UBC and Thompson Rivers.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

The Men’s Volleyball Team is heading to the CIS Men’s Volleyball Championships in Laval, Quebec from Feb 29 – March 2. Wesmen supporters will be able to keep track to see how the team is doing by enjoying the live webcasts feature at the championships. Matches featuring host Laval will have French commentary, other matches will have video only. To access live webcasts starting on Friday, check out the following link:

The 2008 Wesmen Summer Sports Camps will once again be taking place at the Duckworth Centre in July and August. Please log onto www.wesmen.ca for all the camp information and also to register on-line. For further information please call 786-9418.

The 2008 JV Basketball Championships will take place on Mon. March 10th and the  AAAA High School Basketball Championships will be taking place at the Duckworth Centre from Thu. March 13 – Sat. March 15, 2008. Ticket and more information will be available at a later date.

WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

The Winnipeg Wesmen will be hosting the Manitoba Public Insurance Basketball Clinic on Friday March 28 at the Duckworth Centre. The clinic will be led by 10 Wesmen Basketball Team members (5 men, 5 women). Participants from local junior high schools will be in attendance.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Canada West MVB Coach of the Year, Larry McKay and his team finished in fourth place at the Canada West Final Four in Edmonton this past weekend. In Friday’s opening match the Wesmen were defeated 3-1 (22-25, 30-28, 25-20, 25-19) by the UBC Thunderbirds. Canada West MVP and first team all-star Ben Schellenberg led Winnipeg with 12 kills, eight defensive digs, and three service aces. On Saturday night Winnipeg played Thompson Rivers University in the bronze medal match. Winnipeg was defeated 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 18-25, 15-12) by the Wolfpack in a tough five set match. Ben Schellenberg led Winnipeg with 15 kills. Alan Ahow followed with 13 kills and Canada West First All-Star Dustin Addison-Schneider had 45 set assists, three service aces and three blocks. The team will head into this weekend’s CIS Men’s Volleyball Championships as the number seven seed and will take on the number two seed, McMaster in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team were in Regina for the best of three Great Plains Division Final against the Regina Cougars. In Thursday’s opening game, Winnipeg fell behind early, but made a late charge in a 71-64 game one loss. Winnipeg was led by first year guard Amy Ogidan’s game high 22 points. Caity Gooch followed with 15 points, three assists and five steals. Game two took place on Friday night and the fifth ranked Cougars defeated the Wesmen 78-60 to win the best of three series 2-0. Catie Gooch led Winnipeg with a game high 17 points, including four-three pointers. Impressive first year guard Amy Ogidan finished with 14 points.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

The team’s season ended a few weeks back but two players were acknowledged for their fine play this past season. Fifth year left side Nicola Dirks was named to the Canada West Second All-Star Team and first year middle Lauren Sears was named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

The Men’s Basketball Team had their season ended last weekend in the Great Plains Division Semi-Finals. The team will be waiting for word on some potential Canada West Awards which will be announced this week.
