WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Amy Ogidan, women’s basketball –  Ogidan, a first year guard played a big part in helping the Wesmen to a 2-1 Great Plains Division semi-final series win against Manitoba. Amy scored 49 pts, and hauled in 29 rebounds in the series. In game two of series Ogidan scored a game high 26 points, including 15 points in overtime.

Dustin Addison-Schneider, men’s volleyball – Addison-Schneider, a fifth year setter set up the attack to lead the Wesmen to a 2-0 Canada West Quarter final series win against Trinity Western.  Dustin finished the two matches with 69 set assists, 14 defensive digs, one block and one service ace.

GENERAL WESMEN NEWS

The grand opening of the new fitness centre and café at the Duckworth Centre took place last Tuesday. In a surprise announcement U of W President Lloyd Axworthy announced that the fitness facility will now be named “ The Bill Wedlake Fitness Centre” in honor of the soon to be retired Athletic Director, Bill Wedlake.

The 2008 Wesmen Summer Sports Camps will once again be taking place at the Duckworth Centre in July and August. Please log onto www.wesmen.ca for all the camp information and also to register on-line. For further information please call 786-9418.

The AAAA High School Basketball Championships will be taking place at the Duckworth Centre from Thu. March 13 – Sat. March 15, 2008. Ticket and more information will be available at a later date.

WESMEN IN THE COMMUNITY

The Winnipeg Wesmen would like to thank all the community groups, schools and teams who came out to the Duckworth Centre this past week for playoff volleyball matches and basketball games.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Head Coach Larry McKay and his team earned a spot in the Canada West Final Four as well as the CIS Men’s Volleyball Championships. The Wesmen played well in defeating Trinity Western 2-0 in the Canada West Quarter Final series at the Duckworth Centre. In Friday’s opening match Winnipeg defeated the Spartans 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-23). Alan Ahow led Winnipeg with 12 kills and seven defensive digs. Andrew Town and Paul Kjos followed with eight kills. Dustin Addison-Schneider had 36 set assists and six defensive digs. Winnipeg completed the series sweep on Saturday with another 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-18) win. Andrew Town led the attack with 13 kills. Ben Schellenberg followed with nine kills and match high 13 digs. Winnipeg will travel to Edmonton for the Canada West Final Four Championship starting on Friday night. The Wesmen will take on UBC in the opening match. The team will travel to Laval, Quebec the following week for a chance to defend last years CIS Men’s Volleyball Championship.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Tanya McKay and her team advanced to the Great Plains Division Final in Regina. The Wesmen defeated the Manitoba Bisons 2-1 in three tough games, two of which were decided in overtime. On Thursday night the Bisons defeated the Wesmen 53-51 in game one of the series. Jessica Stromberg led Winnipeg with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Randie Gibson scored 11 points, including three-three pointers. Winnipeg evened the best of three series on Saturday with a dramatic 86-75 overtime victory. Amy Ogidan scored a game high 26 points, and 12 rebounds. Ogidan took over the overtime period scoring 15 points in the extra frame. Dawna Wright had a solid game scoring 16 points. Game three on Sunday afternoon went into overtime and Winnipeg won the series with a 69-67 victory. Winnipeg trailed 40-25 at halftime. Wright led Winnipeg with 15 points. Alex MacIver played a big part in the second half comeback finishing the game with 12 points and a game high 16 rebounds. Winnipeg will travel to Regina for the best of three Great Plains Division Final which starts Thursday night in Regina. Game two will on Friday night and game three if necessary will be played on Saturday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Head Coach Dave Crook and his men’s team were in Regina for the Great Plains Division semi-final series against the Cougars this past weekend. The team playing without injured guards Erfan Nasajpour and Michael Passley along with post Dan Shynkaryk, who played only 11 minutes in game two played with a lot of determination and heart but were defeated 2-0 in the best of three series by the Cougars. On Friday night the Wesmen opened up the series with a 64-57 loss in a tight defensive game. Peter Lomuro led Winnipeg with 16 points followed by Mike James’s 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Cougars dominated game two on Saturday, beating Winnipeg 83-49. Fifth year player Matt Opalko, in his final game university game led the team with 11 points.
