WESMEN GONDOLA PIZZA PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Ariel Smith, women’s volleyball – Smith, a first year left side from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia played a big part in helping the Wesmen finish in third place at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. Smith had a team high 16 digs in a win against Toronto and recorded a team high 10 kills against Manitoba.
John Swanepoel, men’s volleyball – Swanepoel from Glenboro, Manitoba was impressive in his first ever CIS start against Regina at the Brandon Invitational Tournament. Swanepoel, who will “red shirt” this season, led the Wesmen with a team high 17 kills and three service aces.

Nick Lother and Jeff Gottschalk of the men’s basketball team put on a special clinic last Thursday for approx 35 individuals as a part of the UWSA Freestyle Event.

BOB FM Shootout begins Friday night…..
The BOB FM Shoot-Out Women’s Basketball tournament will be taking place this weekend at the Duckworth Centre. The host Wesmen will be challenging universities from Royal military College, Fraser Valley and Brandon. Tournament passes are only $15.00 and are available at the Duckworth Customer Service Centre. Pembina Chrysler Basketball Coaches Clinic Announced……
The University of Winnipeg and Pembina Chrysler present the 22nd Annual Wesmen Basketball Coaches Clinic on Saturday October 25. The cost of the clinic is $75.00 and includes seven clinic presentations, a Wesmen Athletic season pass and lunch (Saturday). Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic Coming Soon…..
Calling all basketball coaches….The Scoretec Basketball Coaches Clinic will be taking place on Friday, November 7, 2008 at the Duckworth Centre. The clinic begins at 9:00 a.m. and includes eight clinic presentations, a Wesmen Athletics season pass and lunch. WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The women’s team finished in third place at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge which took place at the Duckworth Centre. The Wesmen compiled a record of 3-2 I the four day event. In Thursday’s opening match Winnipeg rebounded from a 0-2 deficit to down Guelph 3-2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16, 15-13). The team improved its record to 2-0 with a 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 25-11, 17-25, 15-8) win over Sherbrooke on Friday afternoon. Winnipeg pushed its record to 3-0 on Friday night with an impressive 3-1 (15-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-22) win over Toronto. Marlee Bragg led Winnipeg with a match high 15 kills. First year left side Ariel Smith put in a strong defensive performance with 15 digs. On Saturday Winnipeg had a tough day losing both matches 3-0 to Regina and Manitoba. I the match against Regina (16-25, 17-25, 22-25), Christie Nairn led the team with six kills and six digs. Against Manitoba (17-25, 19-25, 18-25) Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 10 kills. The team will play in their final preseason tournament this weekend in Saskatoon at the Saskatchewan Cup.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
The men’s team started a busy week with a 3-1(25-18, 25-22, 25-27, 25-22) win over the Manitoba Bisons in an exhibition match last Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre. The team headed west to Brandon to participate in the two-day Brandon Invitational Tournament. The team finished the event with an even record of 2-2. In the opening match on Friday afternoon the Bisons defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-22). Rory Scott led Winnipeg with five kills. The team evened its record Friday night with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) sweep against the Saskatchewan Huskies. Alan Ahow led Winnipeg with 13 kills and 11 defensive digs. Saturday afternoon Winnipeg dropped a tough 3-2 (20-25, 26-24, 25-23, 21-25, 15-7) match to the Regina Cougars. John Swanepoel led the Wesmen with 17 kills. Maurice Williams led the team with five blocks. The Wesmen ended the tournament on a winning note by defeating the host Brandon Bobcats 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-21) Saturday night. Andrew Town led the team with 14 kills. Alan Ahow was named the Best Server and Paul Kjos was named the Best Blocker of the tournament. Winnipeg will travel to Manitoba on Thursday night for an exhibition match at 7:00 p.m.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Wesmen were in Regina this past weekend for the University of Regina Invitational. Winnipeg ended the three day tournament with a record of 2-1. On Friday Winnipeg started the event with a 55-47 win over the host Regina Cougars. Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with 18 points. On Saturday night, Winnipeg downed their provincial rivals, Brandon Bobcats 73-56 (stats were unavailable for this game). In Sunday’s game against Lethbridge, the Pronghorns defeated the Wesmen 56-48. Amy Ogidan led Winnipeg with nine points and 17 rebounds. Ogidan was named to the All-Tournament Team. The team will host the BOB FM Shootout from Friday to Sunday at the Duckworth Centre. Winnipeg will play RMC (Friday @ 6:00 p.m), Fraser Valley (Saturday @ 6:00 p.m) and Brandon (Sunday @ 1:00 p.m).
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The team played a scrimmage game against Briercrest last Thursday night at Tec Voc High School. Head Coach Dave Crook is anxious to see how his new and talented team will do in game action against CIS opposition. Coach Crook will have that chance on October 17 & 18 when the Wesmen take part in the University of Manitoba Invitational Tournament.
