WESMEN FALL BEHIND, BEAT GRYPHONS IN FIVE

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen rebounded from a 0-2 defecit to come back and defeat the Guelph Gryphons 3-2 (23-25, 24-26, 25-18, 25-16, 15-13) in the opening match of the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge Thursday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Guelph started the contest on a strong note winning the tight first set 25-23 and pulled out a 26-24 set two win to gain a 2-0 lead in the match.

Winnipeg gained momentum in the third set with a 25-18 win to close the gap to 2-1. In the fourth set Winnipeg continued to ride the momentum wave and carried the play winning the fourth set 25-16 and pulled the match even at 2-2.

In the fifth set the Gryphons put up a good fight but the Wesmen held their ground to win the fifth and deciding set 15-13.

The Wesmen will face Sherbrooke Friday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. followed by a match against Toronto at 7:00 p.m.

WESMEN IMPROVE TO 2-0 WITH WIN OVER SHERBROOKE

The Winnipeg Wesmen improved to their record to a perfect 2-0 at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. The Wesmen defeated Sherbrooke 3-2 (19-25, 25-18, 25-11, 17-25, 15-8) in an afternoon contest at the Duckworth Centre.

Winnipeg started the contest on a strong note jumping out to a 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout of the first set. Sherbooke went on a 10-4 run to take a 16-12 lead at the second technical. Sherbrooke went on to win the first set 25-19.

In the second set Winnipeg rallies back after trailing 8-6 to take a 16-13 lead at the second technical timeout. Strong play at the net by Alix Krahn and timely kills by Ariel Smith and Leah Brezinski propelled Winnipeg to a 25-18 set two win and even the match.

Winnipeg exploded for nine straight points to take control of the third set by a score of 19-7. The Wesmen would not falter as Christie Nairn hammered down the winning point to give the Wesmen a 25-11 set three win and a 2-1 lead in the best of five.

The Vert & Or regained their composure in set number four holding leads of 8-4 and 16-9 at the technical timeouts. Sherbrooke forced a fifth and deciding set winning set number four 25-17.

The Wesmen raced out to a 6-1 lead in set number five and did not look back as they would go mon to win the fifth and deciding set 15-8.

The Wesmen (2-0) will face Toronto (0-1) Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Duckworth Centre.

WESMEN DOWN VARSITY BLUES TO REMAIN PERFECT

The Winnipeg Wesmen kept their perfect record in place at the Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge after defeating the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-1 (15-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-22) Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

The Wesmen (3-0) were led by fourth year left side Marlee Bragg, who finished with a match high 15 kills. Bragg also added 12 defensive digs. Second year middle Lauren Sears had a strong match finishing with 13 kills and three blocks. Libero Devyn DeGagne and Ariel Smith put in strong defensive performances with 16 and 15 digs respectively.

Winnipeg will conclude their portion of the tournament on Saturday with matches against two Canada West Conference opponents. The Wesmen will face the Regina Cougars (1-1) at 1:00 p.m. followed by a match against their cross-town rivals Manitoba Bisons at 7:00 p.m.

WESMEN SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT AT LEA MARC CHALLENGE

The Winnipeg Wesmen dropped their first match at this year's Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge. The Regina Cougars swept the Wesmen 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-22) Saturday afternoon at the Duckworth Centre.

Lisa Abrahamowicz led the Cougars with a match high 11 kills and 13 digs. Fourth year middle Beth Clark was next with nine kills for Regina.

Christie Nairn led the Wesmen with six kills and six defensive digs. Second year middle Lauren Sears contributed five kills.

The Cougars took control of the match in the first set racing out to leads of 8-4 and 16-7 at the technical timeouts. Regina held on to a nine point lead for the remainder of the set to take a one game lead with a 25-16 set one win.

In set number two Winnipeg rebounded early holding a 8-5 lead at the first technical only to see the Cougars rebound and outscore Winnipeg 11-2 to take a 16-10 lead at the second timeout. Regina would eventually win the second set 25-17.

Set number three belonged to Winnipeg in the early stages with the Wesmen holding a 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout and racing to a 19-10 lead late in the third set. The Cougars rallied and outscored Winnipeg 15-3,including ten straight points to end the match with a 25-22 set three win.

Winnipeg (3-1) will face Manitoba (3-0) Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Regina (2-1) will face Sherbrooke (2-1) at 5:00 p.m.

WESMEN SWEPT BY BISONS IN TEAMS LAST MATCH AT LEA MARC

The Manitoba Bisons swept the host Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18) in the team's final match of the 2008 Lea Marc Volleyball Challenge Saturday night at the Duckworth Centre.

Sarah Morrissette led the way for Manitoba with 13 kills. Kate Wasyliw had a strong defensive match finishing with 13 digs. Samantha Loewen had five of Manitoba's 14 service aces.

Ariel Smith was the Wesmen leader finishing the match with 10 kills, followed by Lauren Sears with seven kills. Devyn DeGagne was the defensive leader finishing with a team high nine digs.

Winnipeg fell behind in the first set at both technical timeouts by scores of 8-3 and 16-11. The Wesmen were called for three rotation violations in the set to give Manitoba "free points". The Bisons won the first set 25-17.

Manitoba continued to roll in the second set racing out to leads of 8-4 and 16-12 at the technical timeouts. One of many service aces closed out the second set for Manitoba as they captured set number two by a score of 25-19.

In the third set Manitoba continued to put the pressure on the hosts Wesmen. The Bisons roared out to an 8-3 lead at the first timeout and extended their lead to 16-6 at the second break. Winnipeg made a late charge but the Bisons held their ground to win the third set 25-18.

Winnipeg finishes the Lea Marc tournament with a 3-2 record. Manitoba (4-0) will play Sherbrooke (2-2) Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m.
