The Magnus Eliason Community Club is situated just a few blocks from us, and serves a community where the needs are great. Our new Inner City Jr. Wesmen basketball division is in need of basketball shoes both boys and girls. As winter approaches, there are many families with children who need mittens, hats and scarves. Many of the children are about to experience their first winter in Canada. Please consider donating your gently used basketball shoes and gently used scarves mittens and toques. Alternatively while out shopping please remember this plea and add a pair of mittens or a toque to your shopping cart. You may drop off these new or used items at the Duckworth Centre and the staff will ensure they are passed on those in need.INNER CITY YOUTH SCORE JOB OPPORTUNITIES
University of Winnipeg, Inner City Jr. Wesmen, Pizza Hotline launch employment program
Tuesday, November 2, 2010 - The Inner City Jr. Wesmen program, together with the Pizza Hotline Café 22 are pleased to announce an employment partnership for inner city youth.
Bob Axworthy, coach and program director of Inner City Jr. Wesmen along with Pizza Hotline franchise owner Jerry Cianflone have developed an innovative program that will result in employment recommendations and, ultimately, jobs for inner city youth. Members of the program will earn the employment recommendation and will be required to go through traditional employment application and screening processes.
The initial pilot of the program has been successful with 15 young people already employed at Pizza Hotlines new store at 383 Broadway. The newest members of the Pizza Hotline team assume their starting line up roles when the store has its grand opening this week.
This partnership with the Inner-City Jr. Wesmen is very much a win-win. This initiative fits with our companys desire to give back to the community and help tackle the problems of the inner city, plus the program provides us with employees that have learned the most fundamental traits we are looking for - being on time, working hard, and having respect for others, said Pizza Hotline owner Cianflone.
The partnership with Pizza Hotline gives our program members a leg up on getting that all-important first job. Work experience gives these kids a meaningful opportunity to break out of the poverty cycle. They are gaining essential skills and a first foothold in the workforce. We are grateful for our partnership with Pizza Hotline, said Inner City Jr. Wesmen coach Axworthy.
The Inner City Jr. Wesmen program now offers opportunities of sports, education and employment - a large combination that it hopes will help change the lives of inner city youth.

The Juvenile Girls team split their results with 2 wins and 2 losses and nailed 3rd place in the final round. Juvenile Girls were missing both their regular coaches and a number of their players and CP tournament organizer Rick DeGagne was instrumental in finding us a few extra players. As well, our former Jr. Wesmen Coach Suki Chhoeun offered to come along. Our sincere thanks to Neelin High School player Marissa, and Vincent Massey (Brandon) players Amy and Rebecca. And thanks to Suki for actually turning the players into a cohesive team in 4 short games!

Monday, May 10, 2010 - Jr. Wesmen Juvenile Girls and sister team Inner City Wesmen Girls both played in the JRB (Just Real Basketball) Tournament the past weekend. Both teams had some great success with Juvenile Girls finishing with 3 wins and 2 losses and Inner City Wesmen Girls winning a very exciting game against Mayhem.
But the best game of all was the one that these teams played against one another. While often "sister" teams can become rivals, these two teams continue to enjoy playing against one another - while it's always a hard fought game, at the end of the game Jr. Wesmen Girls win!
Jr. Wesmen Take Part In Provincial Club Championships (Girl's Basketball)
Monday, May 3, 2010 - The Jr. Wesmen Juvenile Girls team joined their newly outfitted Inner City sister team in competing in the Club Basketball Provincial Championships April 20 - May 2, 2010. There were a large number of teams competing this year and it gave the team some great opportunities to play, outside of the current WMBA Rising Stars league they play in.
The Juvenile Girls ended the tournament on a high note - they came second in their pool with a record of two wins and one loss. More importantly, there was a vast improvement in their play between their first game and their last game. Congratulations!

Head Coach Gary Scheurmann and Assistant Coaches Sarah and Steph continue to be positive about the team's potential. Congratulations to Assistant Coach Steph on her own team's win in the Grand Am Tournament High School Division.
