PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:

Catie Gooch, women’s basketball – Catie, fourth year guard played a big part in leading the Wesmen to a 81-79 regular season opening victory this past Friday night in Calgary. Catie scored a game high 26 points, including four-three pointers and was solid on the defensive side of the ball with four steals.

•    14-of-17 free throws

Nick Lother, men’s basketball – Nick, fourth year guard scored a game high 24 points, including four-three pointers in Friday’s regular season opening game in Calgary against the Dinos.  Nick also hauled down six rebounds in over 30 minutes of playing time.

•    38 total points (two games)
•    Six-three pointers
•    Seven rebounds
•    Two Assists, Two steals

MEN’S BASKETBALL WEEKEND RESULTS
The men’s basketball team opened up their 2009-2010 Canada West regular season schedule this past weekend against the Calgary Dinos in Calgary. In Friday’s opening game Calgary defeated the Wesmen 94-56. Nick Lother added a game high 24 points. Peter Lomuro was the only other Winnipeg player in double digits with 16 points. On Saturday night the Dinos once again were dominant defeating the Wesmen 96-55. Lomuro led the Wesmen with 16 points. Lother added 14 points. Mark Ridd led the team with six rebounds. The team will now prepare to open up their 2009-2010 regular season home schedule this Friday and Saturday nights against the Alberta Golden Bears (2-0). Game time both nights is 8:00 p.m. Friday’s game will be carried live on 1290 CFRW with Paul Edmonds providing the play by play and Steve Thompson adding the color commentary.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OPEN WITH SPLIT
The women’s team earned a split in their first week of the 2009-2010 Canada West regular season schedule in Calgary. On Friday night the Wesmen edged the Dinos 81-79. Catie Gooch led the team with a game high 26 points, including four-three pointers. Gooch also added four steals and three assists. Amy Ogidan had 18 points and Mackenzie Prasek was next with 17 point, including three-three pointers and dished out three assists. The Dinos avenged Friday’s result downing the Wesmen 87-81 on Saturday night. Gooch led the Wesmen with 21 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Alex MacIver was solid with 13 points and nine rebounds.

SHOOT FOR THE CURE THIS WEEKEND
The Wesmen basketball teams will host the University of Alberta in their regular season home opener on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. The women’s games will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 8:00 p.m. Friday’s men’s game will be carried live on 1290 CFRW with Paul Edmonds providing the play by play and Steve Thompson adding the color commentary. The Winnipeg Wesmen in conjunction with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation will be looking to “Shoot For The Cure” this weekend. Donations to help fight the battle against breast cancer will be accepted all weekend by parents of the women’s basketball team.

INNER CITY JR. WESMEN HALLOWEEN FUNDRAISER A SUCCESS
The Inner City Jr. Wesmen would like to thank all those individuals and families who “helped to grow our pumpkin patch for inner city kids" this past Halloween. The proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Inner City Jr. Wesmen program to support tournaments, uniforms, and education funding to attend University of Winnipeg model school and tuition credits.

WESMEN TEAM UP WITH HOTDOG HOCKEY SPORTS

The Winnipeg Wesmen are pleased to team up with a monthly sports magazine called HotDog Hockey Sports. Each month University of Winnipeg Sports Information Coordinator Sheldon Appelle will have an article featuring the Winnipeg Wesmen. The monthly publication circulates both on line and in print.
