BASKETBALL HOSTS LETHBRIDGE
The Winnipeg Wesmen Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre. Game times for both nights is 6:00 p.m. (women) and 8:00 p.m. (men). 1290 CFRW will broadcast two games this weekend, starting with the women’s game on Friday night followed by the men’s game on Saturday evening. There will be several special groups at the games this weekend starting on Friday night with members of the Canadian Forces, Department of National Defense and their families as well as the children from the Winnipeg School Patrol Program will be special guest of the Wesmen. At halftime on Friday of both games the 2701 PPCLI Drumline will put on a special performance. On Saturday night it is WMBA Night and the Garden City Collegiate Dance Team will put on a special performance.

WVB BATTLE SIMON FRASER
On the road, the Women’s Volleyball Team will travel to Burnaby, British Columbia to take on the Simon Fraser University Clan on Friday and Saturday. Match times both nights is 9:00 CST. The Men’s Volleyball Team has a bye in their schedule this weekend.

The push for the playoffs is in full stride after this past weekend’s play both at the Duckworth Centre and on the road. The Men’s Volleyball Team won both matches against the fifth ranked Trinity Western University Spartans while the Women’s Team gave the fifth ranked Spartans all they could handle and more. The Wesmen Basketball Teams were on the road in British Columbia for games against Simon Fraser and Trinity Western and played with great determination and effort as the drive for the playoffs begins.

At the Duckworth Centre Friday night, the Wesmen Volleyball Teams played their first home matches since late November each facing the Trinity Western University Spartans. In the Women’s match, the Wesmen gave the fifth ranked Spartans all they handle in a 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23, 15-8) loss. Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with a match high 19 kills. Ariel Smith was next with 18. In the late match of the evening, the tenth ranked Men’s Team won their fifth match in a row downing the fifth ranked Spartans 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-12). Justin Duff led the Wesmen with a match high 23 kills and four blocks. Andrew Town finished with 12 kills. On the road against Simon Fraser, the Women’s Basketball Team were defeated 85-50 by the number one ranked Clan. Amy Ogidan and Danielle Baril led the team with 12 points each. The Men’s Team played one of their better games this season in a close 70-60 loss to Simon Fraser. James Horaska had his best output of the season scoring 17 points.

Saturday night all four Wesmen teams battled the Trinity Western University Spartans. At home the Men’s Volleyball Team completed a weekend sweep with their second 3-2 (25-23, 20-25, 16-25, 25-14, 15-13) victory over the Spartans. Andrew Town and Justin Duff led the team with 12 kills. In the Women’s match the Wesmen were defeated 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-13). Ariel Smith led the Wesmen with 13 kills and 11 digs. The Wesmen Basketball Teams moved on to Langley, BC to take on Trinity Western and the Women’s Team started the evening with a solid 81-68 victory. Five players figured in double digits for the Wesmen – Jessica Stromberg (15), Amy Ogidan (14), Randie Gibson (13), Kaitlin Rempel (12) and Mackenzie Prasek (11). In the Men’s game the Spartans defeated the Wesmen 99-63. Nick Lother led the team with a game high 28 points, including six-three pointers.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Justin Duff, men’s volleyball – Duff, fourth year middle was at his best in helping the Wesmen to a two match sweep over the fifth ranked Trinity Western University Spartans. In Friday’s opening match Duff had a personal season high 23 kills in a five set win over the Spartans.

Ariel Smith, women’s volleyball – Smith, second year left side was consistent in both matches against the fifth ranked Trinity Western University Spartans. In Friday’s five set match, Smith had a season high 18 kills to go along with 16 digs.
