UPCOMING WESMEN ACTION
The Wesmen Volleyball Teams will play their first home matches since the end of November, this Friday and Saturday evenings against the Trinity Western University Spartans. Match times on Friday night are 6:00 p.m. (women) and 8:00 p.m. (men). The action continues on Saturday night with the men’s match at 6:00 p.m. followed by the women’s match at 8:00 p.m. The Wesmen Basketball Teams will be on the road this weekend in British Columbia for a pair of games. On Friday night the Wesmen will take on the Simon Fraser University Clan (women 8:15 p.m., men 10:15 p.m. CST and on Saturday challenge the Trinity Western University Spartans (women 7:00 p.m. men 9:00 p.m. CST.

WESMEN RAISE FUNDS FOR HAITI RELIEF EFFORTS

The Winnipeg Wesmen would like to thank all the fans who made a donation to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Efforts at this past Saturday’s basketball contest. A total of $300.00 was raised and was matched dollar for dollar by the Wesmen. A total of $600.00 will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.

WESMEN HAVE SUCCESS AGAINST SASKATCHEWAN
The Wesmen had a successful weekend against the Saskatchewan Huskies. The teams combined won five of eight games/matches against their Canada West Conference rivals. The Wesmen Volleyball Teams both completed the weekend with sweeps on the road in Saskatoon. The Women’s Basketball had a huge win on Saturday night defeating the number three ranked Saskatchewan Huskies.

At the Duckworth Centre Friday night, the Women’s Basketball team was defeated 62-46 by the third ranked Huskies. Mackenzie Prasek led the Wesmen with 14 points, including four-three pointers. In the Men’s game later that night the Huskies came away with a 71-55 victory over the Wesmen. Peter Lomuro led the team with 18 points. On the road in Saskatoon, the Wesmen Volleyball Teams both won their matches against the Huskies. The Women’s Volleyball Team defeated the Huskies 3-1 (25-23, 27-29, 25-13, 25-22). Ariel Smith led the team with 14 kills. Lauren Sears and Sonia Rossy were next with 11. Sears also had three service aces. In the late match the Men’s Volleyball Team swept the Huskies 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16). Justin Duff led the team with 15 kills, six blocks and two service aces. Andrew Town added 11 kills.

The Women’s Basketball Team earned a split in the weekend series with a solid 69-52 victory. Amy Ogidan led the team with a game high 16 points, nine rebounds. Randie Gibson followed with 14 and fellow fifth year player Jessica Stromberg had 13. In the Men’s game the Huskies defeated the Wesmen 94-57. Eric Zimmerman led the team with 19 points and three steals. Mike James added 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks. On the road in Saskatoon, the Wesmen Volleyball Teams completed weekend sweeps. In the early match the Women’s Team beat the Huskies in a five set battle 3-2 (21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 23-25, 15-8), Ariel Smith led the team with 18 kills. Sonia Rossy added 13 and Lauren Sears followed with 12 kills and served up seven aces, one off from tying the Wesmen Women’s Volleyball team record for most service aces in a single match. In the Men’s match the team defeated the Huskies 3-1 (25-16, 26-28, 25-20, 25-23). Andrew Town had a match high 14 kills. Justin Duff added 11 kills and five blocks. Maurice Williams finished with eight kills, two service aces and a pair of blocks.


PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Andrew Town, men’s volleyball – Town, in his fifth and final year with the Wesmen, played a big part in helping the Wesmen to a weekend sweep over the Saskatchewan Huskies. In Saturday’s match, Town had a match high 14 kills to lead the Wesmen.

Lauren Sears, women’s volleyball – Sears, third year middle was at her best in helping the Wesmen to a weekend sweep against the Saskatchewan Huskies. In Saturday’s match, Sears had 12 kills, four digs, two blocks and seven service aces.
