This Week At The Duckworth Centre:

The regular season for the Wesmen has drawn to a close for the Wesmen 2009-2010 season.  Thank you to all of you for another great season at the Duckworth Centre. Be sure to follow the Wesmen in the playoffs starting next week. (see story below)


Men’s Volleyball, Women’s Basketball Prep For Playoffs
Two of our four teams have qualified for the playoffs and will be on the road as follows.

All four Wesmen teams wrapped up their Canada West regular season schedules on home court at the Duckworth Centre this past week. The week had several highlights including the Men’s Basketball team picking up their first win of the regular season beating Manitoba. The Women’s Volleyball team picked up a big win on Friday night against the sixth ranked Calgary Dinos. It was a special week three fifth year athletes who played their final home games as Wesmen. Jessica Stromberg and Randie Gibson were honored for five great years at the conclusion of Thursday’s game and on Saturday Andrew Town played his final home match as a Wesmen. Thanks to all these exceptional individuals for all you have done for the Wesmen.

The action began on Thursday night at the Duckworth with the Wesmen Basketball Teams taking on the Manitoba Bisons. In the women’s game the Bisons defeated the Wesmen 72-69 on a last second basket. Catie Gooch led the Wesmen with 21 points. Amy Ogidan finished with 17. In the Men’s game the Wesmen picked up their first win of the regular season with an impressive 88-65 victory. Peter Lomuro led the team with 24 points. James Horaska finished with a double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds.

On Friday night the Wesmen Volleyball teams challenged the Calgary Dinos in the first match of the weekend series. The Women’s team defeated the sixth ranked Calgary Dinos 3-1 (13-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18). Sonia Rossy led the Wesmen with 16 kills. Ariel Smith added 12 kills and 10 digs. Danica Hughes finished with 44 assists. In the Men’s game the #5 ranked Dinos defeated the #4 ranked Wesmen 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-17). Justin Duff led the way with 13 kills and two blocks. Andrew Town added 10 kills and 17 digs.

On Saturday night in the Men’s match the Dinos defeated the Wesmen 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-23). Justin Duff led the Wesmen with 11 kills and three blocks. Andrew Town added 10 kills and three blocks. In the Women’s match Calgary defeated the Wesmen 3-1 (26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23). Ariel Smith led the team with 12 kills. Lauren Sears finished with 11 kills, two blocks and two service aces.

Vincent Massey "Dynamic Duo" Join Wesmen
A pair of provincial champions are set to join the University of Winnipeg Women’s Basketball Program. Head Coach Tanya McKay announced last week that the “dynamic duo” of Stephanie Kleysen and Ashleigh Chichlowski, from Vincent Massey Collegiate have committed to joining the Wesmen for the start of the 2010-2011 season.

Las Vegas Trip Winner

It was an exciting night at the Duckworth Centre on Thursday night. Not only was the basketball action against the Bisons exciting but it was also an exciting night for the winner of our annual Las Vegas Trip giveaway sponsored by Out N’ About Travel. This year’s winner was Booster Club member Dawn Ridd. Congratulations Dawn, enjoy your trip to Las Vegas.

Wesmen Participating In “I Love To Read Month”
February is “I Love to Read” month across Winnipeg and during the next few weeks several members of the Wesmen Teams will be “Special Guest Readers” in the classrooms of local schools to read stories to students.

Players Of The Week

James Horaska, men’s basketball – Horaska completed his fourth season in style finishing with a double double 15 points and 10 rebounds in helping the Wesmen earn their first victory of the regular season with an impressive 88-65 victory over Manitoba.

Danica Hughes, women’s volleyball – Hughes, first year setter continued her impressive rookie season with 44 assists and a pair of service aces in a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Dinos last Friday night.
 
•     86 assists (two matches)
•     Four service aces
•     Nine defensive digs
•     One kill
•     Finished the season in 8th in Canada West Conference assist category with 8.11 apg.
