PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:

Jessica Stromberg, women’s basketball – Jessica, fifth year guard saw the court for the first time this weekend at the University of Manitoba Invitational. In Sunday’s 68-67 victory over Toronto, Jessica had an all-round solid game finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Justin Duff, men’s volleyball – Justin, fourth year middle was instrumental in leading the Wesmen to a regular season opening split against UBC this past weekend. Justin was at his best in Saturday’s match finishing with a match high 19 kills and an attack percentage of .708.

•    Five service aces
•    .649 attack percentage


MEN’S BASKETBALL WRAP UP PRESEASON SCHEDULE
The men’s basketball team wrapped up their preseason schedule playing host to the Pembina Chrysler Invitational Tournament. In Friday’s opening game the Laurentian Voyageurs defeated the Wesmen 78-71. Nick Lother was the top scorer for the Wesmen with 25 points while adding five steals. Peter Lomuro added 18 points and Ryan Willerton had eight points and two blocks. On Saturday, the Concordia Stingers erased a 15 point deficit to defeat the Wesmen 80-71. Lomuro led the team with 17 points. Lother added 14 points and five assists. Ben Kingdon led Winnipeg with 10 rebounds. James Clark (Concordia) was chosen as the tournament MVP. Nick Lother (Winnipeg) Decee Krah (Concordia), Sean Maxwell (Manitoba) and Isiah Pasquale (Laurentian) were chosen as Tournament All-Stars. The team will now prepare to open up the 2009-2010 regular season in Calgary against the Dinos this Friday and Saturday.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL SPLIT REGULAR SEASON OPENER
The men’s volleyball team opened up the 2009-2010 regular season on the road in Vancouver and came home with a split in the two matches against UBC.  In Friday’s opening match the Wesmen used a first set comeback to propel them to a 3-1 (27-25, 25-23, 21-25, 25-19) victory. Winnipeg erased a 24-18 deficit in the opening set. Andrew Town finished with a match high 22 kills to go along with 14 digs. Matt Schreimer had 15 kills and Justin Duff had 14 kills. On Saturday UBC defeated the Wesmen 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 26-28, 25-18, 15-12) in a five set thriller. Duff had a strong match finishing with 19 kills, three blocks and a pair of service aces. Schriemer had another impressive outing with 17 kills. Town had a team high 12 defensive digs. The team will have a bye in the schedule this week and will next see action on Nov 6-7 at Alberta.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL FALL SHORT AGAINST UBC
The women’s volleyball team fell short in their weekend series against the UBC Thunderbirds. The defending CIS champions swept the Wesmen on Friday and Saturday. In Friday’s match UBC came away with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-15) victory. Carleen Kruschel led the Wesmen with six kills and five digs. Lauren Sears added five kills and two blocks. On Saturday the T-Birds completed the sweep downing the Wesmen 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-18). Ariel Smith, Sonia Rossy and Lauren Sears each had six kills to lead the Wesmen. Kruschel finished with 14 defensive digs. Rossy and Sears each added two blocks.  The team will have a bye in the schedule this week and will next see action on Nov 6-7 at Alberta against the Pandas.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FINISH PRESEASON WITH A PAIR OF WINS
The women’s basketball team finished their preseason schedule winning two of three games at the University of Manitoba Invitational Tournament. On Friday night the Saskatchewan Huskies upended the Wesmen 61-44. Catie Gooch led the team with 12 points. Amy Ogidan added nine points and 10 rebounds. Jessica Stromberg, in her first game of the season had seven points. The Wesmen rebounded on Saturday night defeating the Manitoba Bisons 62-58. Ogidan led the team with a game high 19 points and added nine rebounds and four steals. Kaitlin Rempel had a strong game finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The team ended their preseason on a winning note edging the Toronto Varsity Blues 68-67 Sunday afternoon. Ogidan led the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Stromberg had an all-round great game finishing with 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Catie Gooch had 12 points while dishing out a team high seven assists. Winnipeg will open the regular season on the road this Friday and Saturday against the Calgary Dinos.

INNER CITY JR. WESMEN HALLOWEEN FUNDRAISER
The Inner City Jr. Wesmen are looking "for help to grow our pumpkin patch for inner city kids" this Halloween. The group will be selling pumpkins this Halloween with proceeds going to the Inner City Jr. Wesmen Program. Individuals can purchase pumpkins for their own use or donate them to inner city families here in the city this Halloween. For more information please log onto www.wesmen.ca

WESMEN TEAM UP WITH HOT DOG HOCKEY SPORTS
The Winnipeg Wesmen are pleased to team up with a new monthly sports magazine called Hot Dog Hockey Sports. Each month University of Winnipeg Sports Information Coordinator Sheldon Appelle will have an article featuring the Winnipeg Wesmen. The monthly publication circulates both on line and in print.
